चतुर्गेहं च मे स्वामिन्द्यूतं मद्यं सुवर्ण कम्
Master, my four houses are gambling, liquor, and gold.
त्यक्तदेहस्त्यक्तकुलस्त्यक्तराष्ट्रो जनार्दन
Janardana, having abandoned body, family, and kingdom.
इति श्रुत्वा स भगवान्कृष्णः प्राह विहस्य तम्
Hearing this, Bhagavan Krishna laughed and spoke to him.
ममांशो भूमिमासाद्य क्षयिष्यति महाबलान् 3.3.4.

इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्साक्षात्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे विप्र यथा जातं शृणुष्व तत्

नवदुर्गाव्रतं श्रेष्ठं? नववर्षं चकार ह
He performed the excellent vow of the nine Durgas for nine years.
साह तां यदि मे मातर्वरो देयस्त्वयेश्वरि
O goddess, if you wish to grant me a boon, let it be given by you, O mother.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु सा देवी तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Having said 'so be it,' the goddess disappeared right there.
उद्वाह्य धर्मतो भूपः स्वगेहे तामवासयत्
The king married her lawfully and settled her in his own house.
आवार्यो वत्सराजश्च शतहस्तिसमो बले
Āvārya, king of Vatsa, equal to a hundred elephants in strength.
शतयत्तः स्मृतो म्लेच्छः शूरो वनरसाधिपः

त्रासने च भवेत्कालः क्रव्यादः शरदाहने
In frightening, he becomes Kāla; in the burning of corpses, he is called Kravyāda.
गर्भाधाने च मरुतः सीमंते पिंगलः स्मृतः 2.1.17.
In conception, he is Marut; at the parting of the hair, he is remembered as Piṅgala.
नामसंस्थापने चैवमुपन्यस्ते च पार्थिवः

तोयाग्निर्वरुणोनाम ब्राह्मणाग्निर्हविर्भुजः
The fire in water is called Varuṇa; the fire of Brāhmaṇas is the consumer of offerings.
