हूणदेशस्य मध्ये वै गिरिस्थं पुरुषं शुभम्
In the midst of the land of the Hūṇas, there was a virtuous man dwelling in the mountains.
को भवानिति तं प्राह स होवाच मुदान्वितः
He was asked, 'Who are you?' and he replied with joy.
म्लेच्छधर्मस्य वक्तारं सत्यव्रतपरायणम्
He was a proclaimer of the mleccha religion, devoted to the vow of truth.
श्रुत्वोवाच महाराज प्राप्ते सत्यस्य संक्षये
Hearing this, O great king, he spoke when the era of truth had come to an end.
ईशामसी च दस्यूनां प्रादुर्भूता भयंकरी
A terrifying power of the outcastes and robbers had arisen.
म्लेच्छेषु स्थापितो धर्मो मया तच्छृणु भूपते
Among the mlecchas, I have established the dharma; listen to this, O king.
नैगमं जपमास्थाय जपेत निर्मलं परम्
By adopting the recitation of the Vedic chant, one should recite the pure and supreme.
ध्यानेन पूजयेदीशं सूर्यमंडलसंस्थितम् । अचलोऽयं प्रभुः साक्षात्तथा सूर्योचलः सदा
By meditation, one should worship the Lord who resides in the solar orb; this unmoving Lord is manifest, just as the sun is ever unmoving.
तत्त्वानां चलभूतानां कर्षणः स समंततः 3.3.2.
He draws together all the moving elements of reality equally in every direction.
ईशमूर्तिर्हृदि प्राप्ता नित्यशुद्धा शिवंकरी
The form of the Lord, ever pure and bestowing auspiciousness, is attained in the heart.
इति श्रुत्वा स भूपालो नत्वा तं म्लेच्छपूजकम्
Having heard thus, the king bowed to that worshipper of the mleccha.
स्वराज्यं प्राप्तवान्राजा हयमेधमचीकरत् स्वर्गते नृपतौ तस्मिन्यथा चासीत्तथा शृणु
The king attained sovereign rule and performed the horse sacrifice; when that king ascended to heaven, listen to what happened thereafter.
श्रीसूत उवाच शालिवाहनवंशे च राजानो दश चाभवन्
Śrī Sūta said: In the lineage of Śālivāhana, there were ten kings.
मर्य्यादा क्रमतो लीना जाता भूमंडले तदा दृष्ट्वा प्रक्षीणमर्य्यादां बली दिग्विजयं ययौ
At that time, the boundaries of conduct gradually disappeared on the earth; seeing the decline of righteousness, a powerful one set out to conquer the directions.
सेनया दशसाहस्र्या कालिदासेन संयुतः
With an army of ten thousand, accompanied by Kālidāsa,
जित्वा गांधारजान्म्लेच्छान्काश्मीरान्नारवाञ्छठान्
Having conquered the Gandhāra kings, the mlecchas, the Kashmiris, the Nāravas, and the deceitful,
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे म्लेच्छ आचार्य्येण समन्वितः
Meanwhile, a mleccha accompanied by a teacher appeared.
नृपश्चैव महादेवं मरुस्थलनिवासिनम् चंदनादिभिरभ्यर्च्य तुष्टाव मनसा हरम्
And the king, worshipping the great god Mahādeva, who dwells in the desert, with sandalwood and other offerings, praised Hara in his mind.
भोजराज उवाच त्रिपुरासुरनाशाय वहुमायाप्रवर्त्तिने
King Bhoja spoke: To the destroyer of the Tripura demons, the wielder of manifold illusions,
म्लेच्छैर्गुप्ताय शुद्धाय सच्चिदानन्दरूपिणे
To the one concealed among foreigners, pure, whose form is existence, consciousness, and bliss,
गंतव्यं भोजराजेन महाकालेश्वरस्थले
King Bhoja must go to the place of Mahakaleshvara.
म्लेच्छैस्सुदूषिता भूमिर्वाहीका नाम विश्रुता 3.3.3.
The land called Vahika, renowned, has been thoroughly corrupted by foreigners.
बभूवात्र महामायी योऽसौ दग्धो मया पुरा
There appeared the great magician, who was once burned by me long ago.
अयोनिः स वरो मत्तः प्राप्तवान्दैत्यवर्द्धनः
He, not born from a womb, received a boon from me, the increaser of demons.
नागन्तव्यं त्वया भूप पैशाचे देशधूर्तके
You must not go, O king, to the deceitful land of the spirits.
इति श्रुत्वा नृपश्चैव स्वदेशान्पुनरागमत्
Having heard this, the king indeed returned again to his own country.
उवाच भूपतिं प्रेम्णा मायामदविशारदः
The master of illusion, skilled in intoxicating arts, spoke lovingly to the king.
ममोच्छिष्ठं सभुंजीयाद्यथा तत्पश्य भो नृप
Let him eat my leftovers, just as it is; see that, O king.
म्लेच्छधर्मे मतिश्चासीत्तस्य भूपस्य दारुणे
The king's mind became fixed in the harsh religion of the foreigners.
तच्छ्रुत्वा कालिदासस्तु रुषा प्राह महामदम्
Hearing this, Kalidasa, with anger, addressed the great intoxicator.
