राजधर्मान्मोक्षधर्मान्दानधर्मान्विभागशः
He taught them the duties of kings, the duties of liberation, and the duties of charity, each in turn.
षट्त्रिंशदब्दराज्यं हि कृत्वा स्वर्गपुरं ययुः
Having ruled for thirty-six years, they went to the city of heaven.
गच्छध्वं मुनयः सर्वे योगनिद्रावशो ह्यहम्
Go forth, O sages, for I am now under the sway of yogic sleep.
इति श्रुत्वा तु मुनयो नैमिषारण्यवासिनः
Hearing this, the sages dwelling in Naimisha forest—
द्वादशाब्दशते कालेऽतीते ते शौनकादयः
When a period of twelve hundred years had passed, those sages headed by Shaunaka—
उत्थाय देवखाते च स्नानध्यानादिकाः क्रियाः
Rising up, they performed their daily duties such as bathing and meditation at the sacred pond.
विनीतान्भगवन्भूमौ तदा तान्नृपतीन्वद
O Lord, at that time, tell us about those kings who were humble upon the earth.
सूत उवाच स्वर्गते विक्रमादित्ये राजानो बहुधाऽभवन्
Sūta said: After Vikramaditya ascended to heaven, many kings arose.
पश्चिमे सिंधुनद्यंते सेतुबन्धे हि दक्षिणे 3.3.2.१
On the western bank of the Sindhu river, and at the southern end of the bridge—
अष्टादशैव राष्ट्राणि तेषां मध्ये बभूविरे
There arose exactly eighteen kingdoms among them.
अन्तर्वेदी व्रजथ्यैवाजमेरं मरुधन्व च
Antarvedi, Vraja, Ajamera, Marudhanva—
आवंत्यं चोडुपं वंगं गौडं मागधमेव च
Avanti, Odra, Vanga, Gauda, and Magadha as well—
नानाभाषाः स्थितास्तत्र बहुधर्मप्रवर्तकाः
There, people of many languages resided, and many teachers of diverse faiths.
श्रुत्वा धर्मविनाशं च बहुवृंदैः समन्विताः
Hearing of the decline of righteousness, accompanied by many groups—
हिमपर्वतमार्गेण सिंधुमार्गेण चागमन्
They came by way of the Himalayan path and by the Sindhu route.
गृहीत्वा योषितस्तेषां परं हर्षमुपाययुः
Taking the women among them, they experienced great joy.
विक्रमादित्यपौत्रश्च पितृराज्यं गृहीतवान्
And the grandson of Vikramaditya took up his ancestral kingdom.
बाह्लीकान्कामरूपांश्च रोमजान्खुरजा च्छठान्
Bahlika, Kamarupa, the Romans, Khuraja, and the Chathas—
स्थापिता तेन मर्य्यादा म्लेच्छार्याणां पृथक्पृथक् 3.3.2.
By him, separate boundaries were established for the foreign peoples.
म्लेच्छस्थानं परं सिन्धोः कृतं तेन महात्मना
That great-souled one made a special region for the foreigners beyond the Sindhu.
हूणदेशस्य मध्ये वै गिरिस्थं पुरुषं शुभम्
In the midst of the land of the Hūṇas, there was a virtuous man dwelling in the mountains.
को भवानिति तं प्राह स होवाच मुदान्वितः
He was asked, 'Who are you?' and he replied with joy.
म्लेच्छधर्मस्य वक्तारं सत्यव्रतपरायणम्
He was a proclaimer of the mleccha religion, devoted to the vow of truth.
श्रुत्वोवाच महाराज प्राप्ते सत्यस्य संक्षये
Hearing this, O great king, he spoke when the era of truth had come to an end.
ईशामसी च दस्यूनां प्रादुर्भूता भयंकरी
A terrifying power of the outcastes and robbers had arisen.
म्लेच्छेषु स्थापितो धर्मो मया तच्छृणु भूपते
Among the mlecchas, I have established the dharma; listen to this, O king.
नैगमं जपमास्थाय जपेत निर्मलं परम्
By adopting the recitation of the Vedic chant, one should recite the pure and supreme.
ध्यानेन पूजयेदीशं सूर्यमंडलसंस्थितम् । अचलोऽयं प्रभुः साक्षात्तथा सूर्योचलः सदा
By meditation, one should worship the Lord who resides in the solar orb; this unmoving Lord is manifest, just as the sun is ever unmoving.
तत्त्वानां चलभूतानां कर्षणः स समंततः 3.3.2.
He draws together all the moving elements of reality equally in every direction.
ईशमूर्तिर्हृदि प्राप्ता नित्यशुद्धा शिवंकरी
The form of the Lord, ever pure and bestowing auspiciousness, is attained in the heart.
