तां समालोक्य बलवान्बलिः कामविमोहितः
Seeing her, the powerful Bali was overcome with desire and delusion.
तदा क्रोधातुरा देवा रुरुधुर्दैत्यसत्तमम्
Then the gods, agitated by anger, restrained the foremost of the Daityas.
दानवाश्च तदा दैत्या नानावाहनसंस्थिताः
At that time, the Dānavas and Daityas stood upon various mounts.
दानवैश्च हता देवाः सुरैर्दैत्या विनाशिताः
The gods were slain by the Dānavas, and the Daityas were destroyed by the Suras.
पक्षमात्र मभूद्युद्धं दिव्यं दानवदेवयोः
The divine battle between the Dānavas and the gods lasted only half a month.
अघासुरोऽर्यमा चैव बलः शक्रस्तथैव च
Aghāsura, Aryaman, Bala, and likewise Śakra were present.
वत्सासुरो भगश्चैव विवस्वांश्च बलिः स्वयम्
Vatsāsura, Bhaga, Vivasvān, and Bali himself were there.
विश्वकर्मा मयश्चैव कालनेमिर्हरिः स्वयम् पराजिताश्च ते दैत्या युद्धं त्यक्त्वा प्रदुद्रुवुः
Viśvakarman, Maya, Kālanemi, and Hari himself; those Daityas were defeated and, abandoning the battle, fled.
विवस्वाँश्च तदा संज्ञां गृहीत्वा रथसंस्थिताम् 3.4.18.
Then Vivasvān took Saṃjñā, who was standing upon a chariot.
विवस्वंतं सुरश्रेष्ठं दृष्ट्वा संज्ञा वचोऽब्रवीत्
Seeing Vivasvān, the best of the gods, Saṃjñā spoke these words.
त्वया जिताहं भगवन्बलेर्विप्रियकारिणः
O Lord, I have been conquered by you, who acted against the wishes of Bali.
वीरभुक्ता सदा नारी स्त्रीरत्नं मुनिभिः स्मृतम् एका सा प्रकृतिर्माता गुणसाम्यात्सनातनी
The woman who enjoys valor is always regarded by sages as the jewel among women; she alone is the eternal mother, the primordial nature, due to the equality of qualities.
सत्त्वभूता च भगि नी रजोभूता च गेहिनी
She is composed of sattva, O fortunate one, and also of rajas, O householder.
बहवः पुरुषा ये वै निर्गुणाश्चैकरूपिणः
There are many men who are devoid of qualities and possess a single form.
अलोके पापजास्सर्वे देवब्रह्मसमुद्भवाः कोऽपि पुत्रः पिता भ्राता स च तस्याः पतिर्भवेत्
All those born from the gods and Brahma, arising from darkness and sin, may be sons, fathers, or brothers, and each may become her husband.
स्वकीयां च सुतां ब्रह्मा विष्णुदेवः स्वमातरम्
Brahma, Vishnu, and the gods took their own daughters and mothers.
इति श्रुत्वा वेदमयं वाक्यं चादितिसंभवः
Having heard this statement, which is filled with the Vedas, from Aditi's offspring,
सुताः कन्यास्तयोर्जाता मनुर्वैवस्वतस्तथा
Daughters were born to those two, as well as Manu, the son of Vivasvat.
तदा संज्ञा सती साक्षात्तेजोभूतं पतिं स्वकम् 3.4.18.
Then Sanjna, being present, directly accepted her own husband, who was radiant.
सावर्णिश्च मनुस्तस्यां शनिश्च तपती तथा
Savarni Manu was born to her, as well as Shani and Tapati.
पुत्रभेदेन तां नारीं मत्वा मायां रुषान्वितः
Considering that woman as Maya, due to the distinction of sons, he became filled with anger.
तदा शनिश्च सावर्णिर्विवस्वतं रुषान्वितम्
Then Shani and Savarni, filled with anger, confronted Vivasvat.
कियतो चैव कालेन भग्नभूतौ विवस्वता
After some time, Vivasvat became broken in spirit.
त्रिवर्षान्ते च सा देवी महाकाली समागता
At the end of three years, that goddess Mahakali appeared.
पुनस्तौ च समागम्य युयुधाते विवस्वता
Again, after coming together, they fought with Vivasvat.
तत्र स्थिता प्रिया संज्ञा वडवारूपधरिणी
There, Sanjna, beloved, stood in the form of a mare.
गत्वा ददर्श भगवान्सज्ञां संबोधकारिणीम्
Having gone, the Lord saw Sanjna, who brings about understanding.
पंचवर्षान्तरे संज्ञा गर्भं तस्माद्दधौ स्वयम्
After five years, Sanjna herself conceived a child from him.
पितुर्दुःखं समालोक्य जग्मतू रविमण्डलम् 3.4.18.
Seeing his father's distress, he went to the orb of the sun.
बद्ध्वा तौ स्वपितुः पार्श्वम संप्राप्तौ वडवासुतौ
Binding them, the sons of Vadava came to their father's side.
