तस्य भावं समालोक्य त्रयो देवाः सनातनाः 3.4.17.
Observing his disposition, the three eternal gods.
लिंगहस्तः स्वयं रुद्रो विष्णुस्तद्रसवर्द्धनः रतिं देहि मदाघूर्णे नो चेत्प्राणांस्त्यजाम्यहम्
Rudra, holding the linga, and Vishnu, increasing the essence, said: 'Grant me pleasure, O intoxicated one, or else I shall abandon my life.'
पतिव्रताऽनसूया च श्रुत्वा तेषां वचोऽशुभम्
The chaste Anasuya, hearing their impure words.
मोहितास्तत्र ते देवा गृहीत्वा तां बलात्तदा
The gods there became deluded and seized her by force at that time.
तदा क्रुद्धा सती सा वै ताञ्छशाप मुनिप्रिया
Then, enraged, Sati, beloved of the sage, cursed them.
महादेवस्य वै लिंगं ब्रह्मणोऽस्य महाशिरः भविष्यंति सुरश्रेष्ठा उपहासोऽयमुत्तमः
The linga of Mahadeva and the great head of Brahma—these, O best of the gods, shall become objects of ridicule.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं नमस्कृत्य मुनिप्रियाम्
Hearing these dreadful words, they bowed to the beloved of the sage.
अनसूया तदा प्राह भवन्तो मम पुत्रकाः
Then Anasuya said, 'You shall be my sons.'
इत्युक्ते वचने ब्रह्मा चंद्रमाश्च तदा ह्यभूत् तत्पापपरिहारार्थं योगवन्तो बभूविरे
When these words were spoken, Brahma and Chandra were thus; to remove that sin, they became engaged in yoga.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी प्रकृतिस्सर्व धर्मिणी
Meanwhile, the goddess, the very embodiment of all righteousness, appeared.
मन्वंतरमतो जातं तेषां योगं प्रकुर्वताम् 3.4.17.
From that time, a new manvantara arose as they practiced yoga.
उवाच वचनं रम्यं तेषां मंगलहेतवे
She spoke pleasant words for their auspiciousness.
रुद्रांशश्चैव दुर्वासाः प्रत्यूषः सप्तमो वसुः तेषां वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य वसवस्ते त्रयोऽभवन्
Durvasa, a portion of Rudra, and Pratyusha, the seventh Vasu—hearing her words, three Vasus were born.
स्वांशेन भूतलं जग्मुः कलिशुद्धाय दारुणे
By their own portions, they descended to earth for the purification of the harsh Kali age.
पीपा नाम सुतः सोमः सुदेवस्य तदा ह्यभूत्
At that time, Soma, son of Sudeva, was known as Pipa.
रामानन्दस्य शिष्योऽभूद्द्वारकां स समागतः वैष्णवेभ्यो ददौ तत्र प्रेततत्त्वविनाशिनीम्
He became a disciple of Ramananda and went to Dvaraka, where he gave to the Vaishnavas the teaching that destroys the knowledge of ghosts.
प्रत्यूषश्चैव पांचाले वैश्यजात्यां समुद्भवः
Pratyusha was born among the Panchalas in the Vaishya caste.
रामानन्दं समागम्य शिष्यो भूत्वा स नानकः
Meeting Ramananda, he became his disciple and was known as Nanaka.
प्रभासो वै शांतिपुरे ब्रह्मजात्यां समुद्भवः इति ते वसुमाहात्म्यं मया शौनक वर्णितम्
Prabhasa was born in Shantipura in the Brahmana caste; thus, O Shaunaka, I have described to you the greatness of the earth.
अश्विनौ च समालोक्य तयोर्गाथामवर्णयत्
And seeing the Ashvins, he recited their story in verse.
वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे पूर्वं विश्वकर्मा विचित्रकृत् स्पर्द्धाभूतो महामायां तुष्टाव बहुपूजनैः
In the previous Vaivasvata manvantara, Vishvakarma, the skillful one, having become envious, worshipped the great Maya with many offerings.
प्रसन्ना सा तदा देवी चित्रायां तस्य योषिति
Then, the goddess, pleased, appeared in the form of Chitra as his wife.
षोडशाब्दे वयः प्राप्ते संज्ञायास्तत्पिता सुखी
When she reached the age of sixteen, her father was content regarding Saṃjñā.
यक्षाधीशाश्च षड्विंशत्कुबेराद्यास्समागताः
The lords of the Yakṣas, twenty-six in number, including Kubera, assembled there.
पावका ऊनपंचाशद्वायवश्च तथा स्मृताः
The fires, forty-nine in number, and the winds are also remembered as present.
त्रयोदश च प्रत्यूषाः प्राप्ता विश्वप्ररक्षकाः
And thirteen Pratyūṣas, protectors of the universe, arrived.
भवाद्याश्च तदाः रुद्राः शशिमण्डलरक्षकाः
Then the Rudras, beginning with Bhava, guardians of the lunar orb, were also present.
दानवा विप्रचित्त्याद्याश्चतुराशीतिराययुः
The Dānavas, led by Vipracitti and others, eighty-four in number, came as well.
शेषाद्याश्च तदा नागास्तार्क्ष्याद्या गरुडाः स्मृताः 3.4.18.
At that time, the Nāgas beginning with Śeṣa, and the Garuḍas beginning with Tārkṣya, are also remembered.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी देवकन्यासमन्विता
Meanwhile, the goddess arrived, accompanied by divine maidens.
