तस्या गर्भगते पुत्रे महेन्द्रश्च भयान्वितः 3.4.17.
When her son was in the womb, Mahendra became fearful.
सप्तमासि स्थिते गर्भे शक्रमायाविमोहिता
When the pregnancy had reached the seventh month, Śakra deluded her with his magic.
अंगुष्ठमात्रो भगवान्महेन्द्रो वज्रसंयुतः
The blessed Mahendra, no bigger than a thumb and armed with the thunderbolt, entered.
जीवभूतानतिबलान्दृष्ट्वा सप्त महारिपून्
Seeing seven great enemies, who were living beings and very powerful,
नम्रीभूतश्च तान्दृष्ट्वा महेन्द्रस्तैः समन्वितः
Mahendra, seeing them humbled, joined with them.
प्रसन्ना सा दितिर्देवान्महेन्द्राय च तान्ददौ
The pleased goddess Diti gave those sons to Mahendra and the gods.
इलो नाम स वेदज्ञो यथेलो नृपतिस्तदा
There was a king named Ila, learned in the Vedas, who was then called Yathela.
एकदा बलवान्राजा मनुपुत्र इलः स्वयम्
Once, the mighty king Ila, son of Manu, himself—
मेरोरधः स्थितः खण्डः स्वर्णगर्भो हरिप्रियः
A portion of Mount Meru, called Svarṇagarbha and dear to Hari, was situated below.
इलेनावृतमेवापि कृतं तत्र स्थले सुराः
Even that land, covered by Ila, was made into a place for the gods.
भारते ये स्थिता लोका इलावृतमुपागताः 3.4.17.
The people who remained in Bhārata entered Ilāvṛta.
आरोहणं नरैस्तस्मित्कृतं स्वर्णमयं शुभम्
Men created a splendid golden ascent.
तान्दृष्ट्वा मनुजान्प्राप्तान्सदेहान्स्वर्गमण्डले
Seeing those humans who had arrived in the heavenly realm with their bodies,
ज्ञात्वा स भगवान्रुद्रो भवान्या सह शंकरः
Knowing this, the blessed Rudra, Śaṃkara, together with Bhavānī,
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राप्तो वैवस्वतसुतो महान्
Meanwhile, the great son of Vaivasvata arrived.
नग्नभूतं समालोक्य नेत्रे संमील्य संस्थितः
Seeing one who had become naked, he closed his eyes and remained still.
अस्मिन्खण्डे सदा नार्यो भविष्यंति च मां विना
In this region, women will always exist, but without me.
इला बभूव नृपते कन्या जनमनोहरा
Ilā became, O king, a maiden of enchanting birth.
इलासमाधिभूतायाः सप्तविंशच्चतुर्युगम् बुधं देवं पतिं कृत्वा चंद्रवंशमजीजनत्
For twenty-seven chaturyugas, Ilā was the presiding spirit; having made Budha the divine husband, she produced the lunar dynasty.
अयोध्याधिपतिः श्रीमान्यदेलावृतमागतः
The glorious ruler of Ayodhyā also came to Ilāvṛta.
तदा प्राप्त इलो विप्रस्तस्या रूपेण मोहितः 3.4.17.
At that time, Ilā appeared, and the sage was captivated by her form.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र वागुवा चाशरीरिणी
Meanwhile, there was a bodiless voice there.
अनिलो नाम तत्रैव विख्यातोऽभूद्द्विजस्य वै
There, the one named Anila became renowned as a twice-born.
छित्त्वाछित्त्वा शिरो रम्यं तस्मै जातं पुनः पुनः
Having cut off and cut off the beautiful head, it was born again and again for him.
प्राह त्वमूनपंचा शद्विभेदाञ्जनयिष्यसि
He said, 'You will produce five and six divisions.'
यथा कुबेरो भगवान्षड्विंशद्वरुणप्रियः
Just as the blessed Kubera, beloved of Varuṇa, is twenty-six,
इत्युक्ते वचने तस्मिन्दितिकुक्षौ द्विजोत्तमः
When these words were spoken, the best of twice-born entered Diti's womb.
धान्यपालस्य वै गेहे मृलगंडान्तजः सुतः
In the house of the grain-keeper, a son was born from the cheek of clay.
अलिको नाम वै म्लेच्छस्तत्र स्थाने समागतः
There, a foreigner named Alika arrived at that place.
अनपत्यो वस्त्रकारी सुतं प्राप्य गृहं ययौ
Childless and a maker of garments, after obtaining a son, he went home.
