खलीनालंकृतमुखं कारयेद्धेमवाजिनम्
One should fashion a golden horse with a face adorned with a bridle.
स्थापयेद्वेदिमध्ये तु कृष्णाजिनतिलोपरि
It should be placed in the center of the altar, upon black antelope skin and sesame seeds.
संपूज्य कुसुमैः श्वेतैश्चणकान्विनिवेद्य च
After worshiping it with white flowers and offering chickpeas—
इममुच्चारयेन्मंत्रं पुराणोक्तं यतव्रतः
One should recite this mantra, as prescribed in the Purāṇa, with proper observance.
वाजिरूपेण मामस्मात्पाहि संसारसागरात्
"In the form of a horse, protect me from this ocean of worldly existence."
प्रदक्षिणं ततः कृत्वा प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
Then, after circumambulating it, one should bow and dismiss it.
दत्त्वा पापक्षयाद्भानोर्लोकमाप्नोति शाश्वतम् 4.186.
By giving it, one's sins are destroyed, and one attains the eternal world of the Sun.
पुराणश्रवणं तद्वत्कारयेद्भोजनादनु
One should likewise arrange for the hearing of the Purāṇa after the meal.
इत्थं हिरण्याश्वविधिं करोति यः सुपुण्यमासाद्य दिनं नरेंद्र
Thus, whoever performs the golden horse rite on a supremely auspicious day, O king—
इति पठति य इत्थं हैमवाजिप्रदानं सकलकलुषमुक्तः सोऽश्वयुक्तेन भूपः
Whoever recites thus, or gives a golden horse, is freed from all impurity, O king, and is joined with the horse.
यो वा शृणोति पुरुषोऽप्यथ वा स्मरेद्वा हैमाश्वदानमभिनंदति दीयमानम्
Or whoever hears, or even remembers, or approves the giving of a golden horse—
संहतौ तु दितिर्ज्ञात्वा कश्यपं समपूजयत्
At the time of dissolution, Diti, having understood, worshiped Kaśyapa.
द्वादशाब्दांतरे स्वामी कश्यपो भगवानृषिः सा तु श्रुत्वा नमस्कृत्य वचनं प्राह हर्षिता
After twelve years had passed, the revered sage Kaśyapa, the lord, spoke; having heard him, she bowed and joyfully replied.
अदितिर्मम या देवी सपत्नी पुत्रसंयुता
Aditi, who is my co-wife, is blessed with sons.
तदवर्यसुते नैव विष्णुना सुरपालिना
But her inferior-born sons were not protected by Viṣṇu, the guardian of the gods.
देहि मे तनयं स्वामिन्द्वादशादित्यनाशनम्
O lord, grant me a son who will destroy the twelve Ādityas.
ब्रह्मणा निर्मितौ लोके धर्माधर्मौ परापरौ
In this world, Brahmā created both dharma and adharma, the higher and the lower.
अधर्मपक्षास्तु नरा वैरिणस्तस्य धीमतः
Those on the side of adharma are the enemies of that wise one.
अतो धर्मप्रिये शुद्धं कुरु तस्मान्महाबलः
Therefore, O lover of righteousness, purify yourself, so that a mighty one may be born.
इति श्रुत्वा दितिर्देवी कश्यपाद्गर्भमुत्तमम्
Having heard this, the goddess Diti conceived an excellent child by Kaśyapa.
तस्या गर्भगते पुत्रे महेन्द्रश्च भयान्वितः 3.4.17.
When her son was in the womb, Mahendra became fearful.
सप्तमासि स्थिते गर्भे शक्रमायाविमोहिता
When the pregnancy had reached the seventh month, Śakra deluded her with his magic.
अंगुष्ठमात्रो भगवान्महेन्द्रो वज्रसंयुतः
The blessed Mahendra, no bigger than a thumb and armed with the thunderbolt, entered.
जीवभूतानतिबलान्दृष्ट्वा सप्त महारिपून्
Seeing seven great enemies, who were living beings and very powerful,
नम्रीभूतश्च तान्दृष्ट्वा महेन्द्रस्तैः समन्वितः
Mahendra, seeing them humbled, joined with them.
प्रसन्ना सा दितिर्देवान्महेन्द्राय च तान्ददौ
The pleased goddess Diti gave those sons to Mahendra and the gods.
इलो नाम स वेदज्ञो यथेलो नृपतिस्तदा
There was a king named Ila, learned in the Vedas, who was then called Yathela.
एकदा बलवान्राजा मनुपुत्र इलः स्वयम्
Once, the mighty king Ila, son of Manu, himself—
मेरोरधः स्थितः खण्डः स्वर्णगर्भो हरिप्रियः
A portion of Mount Meru, called Svarṇagarbha and dear to Hari, was situated below.
इलेनावृतमेवापि कृतं तत्र स्थले सुराः
Even that land, covered by Ila, was made into a place for the gods.
