पावका ऊनपंचाशद्वायवश्च तथा स्मृताः
The forty-nine Fires and the Winds, as they are remembered, also gathered.
त्रयोदश च प्रत्यूषाः प्राप्ता विश्वप्ररक्षकाः
The thirteen Pratyūṣas, protectors of the universe, arrived as well.
भवाद्याश्च तदाः रुद्राः शशिमण्डलरक्षकाः
The Rudras, beginning with Bhava, who guard the lunar orb, were also present.
दानवा विप्रचित्त्याद्याश्चतुराशीतिराययुः
The Daityas and Dānavas, led by Vipracitti and others, eighty-four in number, came too.
शेषाद्याश्च तदा नागास्तार्क्ष्याद्या गरुडाः स्मृताः 3.4.18.
Nāgas beginning with Śeṣa, and Garuḍas beginning with Tārkṣya, are also remembered as present.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी देवकन्यासमन्विता
At that moment, the goddess, accompanied by divine maidens, appeared.
तां समालोक्य बलवान्बलिः कामविमोहितः
Seeing her, the powerful Bali was overcome with desire and delusion.
तदा क्रोधातुरा देवा रुरुधुर्दैत्यसत्तमम्
Then, filled with anger, the gods attacked the foremost of the Daityas.
दानवाश्च तदा दैत्या नानावाहनसंस्थिताः
At that time, the Dānavas and Daityas, mounted on various vehicles, assembled.
दानवैश्च हता देवाः सुरैर्दैत्या विनाशिताः
The gods were slain by the Dānavas, and the Daityas were destroyed by the gods.
पक्षमात्र मभूद्युद्धं दिव्यं दानवदेवयोः
A divine battle between the Dānavas and the gods lasted for half a month.
अघासुरोऽर्यमा चैव बलः शक्रस्तथैव च
Aghāsura, Aryaman, Bala, and also Indra took part.
वत्सासुरो भगश्चैव विवस्वांश्च बलिः स्वयम्
Vatsāsura, Bhaga, Vivasvān, and Bali himself were present.
विश्वकर्मा मयश्चैव कालनेमिर्हरिः स्वयम् पराजिताश्च ते दैत्या युद्धं त्यक्त्वा प्रदुद्रुवुः
Viśvakarman, Maya, Kālanemi, and Hari himself—all these Daityas were defeated and, abandoning the battle, fled.
विवस्वाँश्च तदा संज्ञां गृहीत्वा रथसंस्थिताम् 3.4.18.
At that time, Vivasvan took Saṃjñā, who was seated upon the chariot.
विवस्वंतं सुरश्रेष्ठं दृष्ट्वा संज्ञा वचोऽब्रवीत्
Seeing Vivasvan, the foremost among the gods, Saṃjñā spoke these words.
त्वया जिताहं भगवन्बलेर्विप्रियकारिणः
O Lord, I have been conquered by you, who act against the wishes of Bali.
वीरभुक्ता सदा नारी स्त्रीरत्नं मुनिभिः स्मृतम् एका सा प्रकृतिर्माता गुणसाम्यात्सनातनी
A woman who has enjoyed heroes is always regarded by sages as a jewel among women; she alone is the eternal nature, the mother, due to the equality of qualities.
सत्त्वभूता च भगि नी रजोभूता च गेहिनी
O fortunate one, she is composed of sattva, and as a householder, she is composed of rajas.
बहवः पुरुषा ये वै निर्गुणाश्चैकरूपिणः
There are many men who are without qualities and of a single form.
अलोके पापजास्सर्वे देवब्रह्मसमुद्भवाः कोऽपि पुत्रः पिता भ्राता स च तस्याः पतिर्भवेत्
All those born from gods and Brahma, who are generated from sin in darkness, may be sons, fathers, or brothers, and he may become her husband.
स्वकीयां च सुतां ब्रह्मा विष्णुदेवः स्वमातरम्
Brahma, Vishnu, and the gods took their own daughters and mothers.
इति श्रुत्वा वेदमयं वाक्यं चादितिसंभवः
Having heard this statement, which is filled with the Vedas, from the offspring of Aditi,
सुताः कन्यास्तयोर्जाता मनुर्वैवस्वतस्तथा
Daughters were born to those two, and likewise Manu, son of Vivasvan.
तदा संज्ञा सती साक्षात्तेजोभूतं पतिं स्वकम् 3.4.18.
Then Saṃjñā, being virtuous, directly saw her husband, radiant in form.
सावर्णिश्च मनुस्तस्यां शनिश्च तपती तथा
Sāvarṇi Manu was born from her, as well as Śani and Tapatī.
पुत्रभेदेन तां नारीं मत्वा मायां रुषान्वितः
Considering that woman as Māyā due to the difference of sons, he became filled with anger.
तदा शनिश्च सावर्णिर्विवस्वतं रुषान्वितम्
Then Śani and Sāvarṇi, filled with wrath, approached Vivasvan.
कियतो चैव कालेन भग्नभूतौ विवस्वता
After some time, Vivasvan became broken in spirit.
त्रिवर्षान्ते च सा देवी महाकाली समागता
At the end of three years, that goddess Mahākālī appeared.
