तदा क्रुद्धा सती सा वै ताञ्छशाप मुनिप्रिया
Then, that virtuous lady, enraged, pronounced a curse upon them, beloved of the sage.
महादेवस्य वै लिंगं ब्रह्मणोऽस्य महाशिरः भविष्यंति सुरश्रेष्ठा उपहासोऽयमुत्तमः
The linga of Mahadeva and the great head of Brahma—these, O best of gods, shall become objects of ridicule; this is the highest mockery.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं नमस्कृत्य मुनिप्रियाम्
Hearing these dreadful words, they bowed to the sage’s beloved.
अनसूया तदा प्राह भवन्तो मम पुत्रकाः
Then Anasuya spoke: 'You are like sons to me.'
इत्युक्ते वचने ब्रह्मा चंद्रमाश्च तदा ह्यभूत् तत्पापपरिहारार्थं योगवन्तो बभूविरे
When these words were spoken, Brahma and the Moon were thus; to remove that sin, they became endowed with yoga.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी प्रकृतिस्सर्व धर्मिणी
Meanwhile, the goddess, the very embodiment of righteousness, appeared.
मन्वंतरमतो जातं तेषां योगं प्रकुर्वताम् 3.4.17.
From then, a new Manvantara arose as they engaged in yoga.
उवाच वचनं रम्यं तेषां मंगलहेतवे
She spoke pleasant words for their well-being.
रुद्रांशश्चैव दुर्वासाः प्रत्यूषः सप्तमो वसुः तेषां वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य वसवस्ते त्रयोऽभवन्
Durvasa, a portion of Rudra, and Pratyusha, the seventh Vasu—hearing her words, these three Vasus were born.
स्वांशेन भूतलं जग्मुः कलिशुद्धाय दारुणे
With a portion of themselves, they descended to earth for the purification of the terrible Kali age.
पीपा नाम सुतः सोमः सुदेवस्य तदा ह्यभूत्
At that time, Soma, named Pipa, became the son of Sudeva.
रामानन्दस्य शिष्योऽभूद्द्वारकां स समागतः वैष्णवेभ्यो ददौ तत्र प्रेततत्त्वविनाशिनीम्
He became a disciple of Ramananda and went to Dvaraka; there he gave to the Vaishnavas the teaching that destroys the knowledge of death.
प्रत्यूषश्चैव पांचाले वैश्यजात्यां समुद्भवः
Pratyusha was born among the Panchalas in the Vaishya caste.
रामानन्दं समागम्य शिष्यो भूत्वा स नानकः
Having met Ramananda, he became his disciple, and was known as Nanaka.
प्रभासो वै शांतिपुरे ब्रह्मजात्यां समुद्भवः इति ते वसुमाहात्म्यं मया शौनक वर्णितम्
Prabhasa was born in Shantipura in the Brahmin caste; thus, O Shaunaka, I have described to you the greatness of the Vasus.
अश्विनौ च समालोक्य तयोर्गाथामवर्णयत्
And seeing the Ashvins, he recited a song about them.
वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे पूर्वं विश्वकर्मा विचित्रकृत् स्पर्द्धाभूतो महामायां तुष्टाव बहुपूजनैः
In the previous era of Vaivasvata Manu, Viśvakarman, the skillful creator, became envious and worshipped the great Māyā with many offerings.
प्रसन्ना सा तदा देवी चित्रायां तस्य योषिति
Then, the goddess was pleased and appeared in a wondrous form as his wife.
षोडशाब्दे वयः प्राप्ते संज्ञायास्तत्पिता सुखी
When she reached the age of sixteen, her father Saṃjñā was content.
यक्षाधीशाश्च षड्विंशत्कुबेराद्यास्समागताः
The twenty-six lords of the Yakṣas, including Kubera, assembled there.
पावका ऊनपंचाशद्वायवश्च तथा स्मृताः
The forty-nine Fires and the Winds, as they are remembered, also gathered.
त्रयोदश च प्रत्यूषाः प्राप्ता विश्वप्ररक्षकाः
The thirteen Pratyūṣas, protectors of the universe, arrived as well.
भवाद्याश्च तदाः रुद्राः शशिमण्डलरक्षकाः
The Rudras, beginning with Bhava, who guard the lunar orb, were also present.
दानवा विप्रचित्त्याद्याश्चतुराशीतिराययुः
The Daityas and Dānavas, led by Vipracitti and others, eighty-four in number, came too.
शेषाद्याश्च तदा नागास्तार्क्ष्याद्या गरुडाः स्मृताः 3.4.18.
Nāgas beginning with Śeṣa, and Garuḍas beginning with Tārkṣya, are also remembered as present.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी देवकन्यासमन्विता
At that moment, the goddess, accompanied by divine maidens, appeared.
तां समालोक्य बलवान्बलिः कामविमोहितः
Seeing her, the powerful Bali was overcome with desire and delusion.
तदा क्रोधातुरा देवा रुरुधुर्दैत्यसत्तमम्
Then, filled with anger, the gods attacked the foremost of the Daityas.
दानवाश्च तदा दैत्या नानावाहनसंस्थिताः
At that time, the Dānavas and Daityas, mounted on various vehicles, assembled.
दानवैश्च हता देवाः सुरैर्दैत्या विनाशिताः
The gods were slain by the Dānavas, and the Daityas were destroyed by the gods.
