नम्रीभूतश्च तान्दृष्ट्वा महेन्द्रस्तैः समन्वितः
Seeing them humbled, Mahendra joined with them.
प्रसन्ना सा दितिर्देवान्महेन्द्राय च तान्ददौ
Diti, pleased, gave those gods to Mahendra.
इलो नाम स वेदज्ञो यथेलो नृपतिस्तदा
There was a king named Ila, learned in the Vedas, known as Yathela.

इलेनावृतमेवापि कृतं तत्र स्थले सुराः
That land there was also surrounded by Ilā, and the gods established it.
भारते ये स्थिता लोका इलावृतमुपागताः 3.4.17.
The worlds that are established in Bhārata have come to Ilāvṛta.
आरोहणं नरैस्तस्मित्कृतं स्वर्णमयं शुभम्
A golden, auspicious ascent was made there by men.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राप्तो वैवस्वतसुतो महान्
Meanwhile, the great son of Vivasvat arrived.
नग्नभूतं समालोक्य नेत्रे संमील्य संस्थितः
Seeing that he had become naked, he closed his eyes and remained still.
अस्मिन्खण्डे सदा नार्यो भविष्यंति च मां विना
In this region, women will always exist, but not with me.
इला बभूव नृपते कन्या जनमनोहरा
O king, Ilā became a maiden of captivating beauty.
इलासमाधिभूतायाः सप्तविंशच्चतुर्युगम् बुधं देवं पतिं कृत्वा चंद्रवंशमजीजनत्
Having become absorbed as Ilā, for twenty-seven and four yugas, she, taking Budha the god as her husband, gave birth to the lunar dynasty.
अयोध्याधिपतिः श्रीमान्यदेलावृतमागतः
The illustrious lord of Ayodhyā also came to Ilāvṛta.
तदा प्राप्त इलो विप्रस्तस्या रूपेण मोहितः 3.4.17.
Then, the learned Ilā arrived, enchanted by her form.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र वागुवा चाशरीरिणी
At that moment, there, a bodiless voice spoke.
अनिलो नाम तत्रैव विख्यातोऽभूद्द्विजस्य वै
There, indeed, one named Anila became renowned among the twice-born.
छित्त्वाछित्त्वा शिरो रम्यं तस्मै जातं पुनः पुनः
Having cut off and cut off again the beautiful head, it was produced for him again and again.
प्राह त्वमूनपंचा शद्विभेदाञ्जनयिष्यसि
She said, 'You will generate these five and sixfold divisions.'
यथा कुबेरो भगवान्षड्विंशद्वरुणप्रियः
Just as the blessed Kubera, beloved of Varuṇa, is twenty-sixfold.
इत्युक्ते वचने तस्मिन्दितिकुक्षौ द्विजोत्तमः
When these words were spoken, O best of the twice-born, in that very moment—
धान्यपालस्य वै गेहे मृलगंडान्तजः सुतः
In the house of the keeper of grains, a son was born from the swelling of a clay tumor.
अलिको नाम वै म्लेच्छस्तत्र स्थाने समागतः
There, in that place, a foreigner named Alika arrived.
अनपत्यो वस्त्रकारी सुतं प्राप्य गृहं ययौ
A childless weaver, having obtained a son, went home.
स सप्ताब्दवपुर्भूत्वा गोदुग्धपानतत्परः 3.4.17.
That boy, having reached the age of seven, was devoted to drinking cow's milk.
स्वहस्तेनैव संस्कृत्य भोजनं हरयेऽपर्यत्
He himself prepared food with his own hands and offered it to Hari.
पितृमातृपरित्यक्तः स बालः पंचहायनः
That boy, abandoned by his father and mother, was five years old.
