नायं नलस्तव पतिर्ब्राह्मणोयं सुमोहितः
This is not Nala, your husband; this is a Brahmin, greatly deluded.
महासरस्वतीं देवीं तुष्टाव स तु मोहितः
He, being deluded, praised the great goddess Sarasvatī.
स्वमुखात्स्वांशमुत्पाद्य संजातस्तु ततो वसुः
Then, producing his own portion from his own mouth, Vasu was born.
रंकणो नाम विख्यातो लक्ष्मीदत्तस्य वै सुतः
He became renowned as Raṅkaṇa, the son of Lakṣmīdatta.
यंकणा नाम तत्पत्नी बभूव च पतिव्रता 3.4.16.
His wife was named Yamkana, and she was devoted to her husband.
काष्ठमानीय विक्रीय बुभुजाते परस्परम्
They brought wood, sold it, and sustained themselves together.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे प्रतिसर्गपर्वणि चतुर्युगखंडापरपर्याये कलियुगीयेतिहाससमुच्चये वसुमाहात्म्ये रंकण वैश्योत्पत्तिवर्णनो नाम षोडशोऽध्यायः
She said to that best of twice-born, 'Ask for a boon.'
संहतौ तु दितिर्ज्ञात्वा कश्यपं समपूजयत्
At the time of the destruction, Diti, having understood, honored Kaśyapa.
द्वादशाब्दांतरे स्वामी कश्यपो भगवानृषिः सा तु श्रुत्वा नमस्कृत्य वचनं प्राह हर्षिता
After twelve years, the revered sage Kaśyapa became master; she, having heard, bowed and joyfully spoke.
अदितिर्मम या देवी सपत्नी पुत्रसंयुता
Aditi, who is my co-wife, is surrounded by sons.
तदवर्यसुते नैव विष्णुना सुरपालिना
Her inferior sons are not protected by Viṣṇu, the guardian of the gods.
देहि मे तनयं स्वामिन्द्वादशादित्यनाशनम्
O master, grant me a son who will destroy the twelve Ādityas.
ब्रह्मणा निर्मितौ लोके धर्माधर्मौ परापरौ
In the world created by Brahmā, dharma and adharma, the higher and lower, exist.
अधर्मपक्षास्तु नरा वैरिणस्तस्य धीमतः
Those men who follow the side of adharma are enemies of that wise one.
अतो धर्मप्रिये शुद्धं कुरु तस्मान्महाबलः
Therefore, O lover of dharma, purify yourself, for that one is of great strength.
इति श्रुत्वा दितिर्देवी कश्यपाद्गर्भमुत्तमम्
Having heard thus, the goddess Diti received the excellent seed from Kaśyapa.
तस्या गर्भगते पुत्रे महेन्द्रश्च भयान्वितः 3.4.17.
When her son entered the womb, Mahendra became fearful.
सप्तमासि स्थिते गर्भे शक्रमायाविमोहिता
When the pregnancy reached the seventh month, Śakra deluded her with Māyā.
अंगुष्ठमात्रो भगवान्महेन्द्रो वज्रसंयुतः
Mahendra, possessed of the thunderbolt, became the size of a thumb.
जीवभूतानतिबलान्दृष्ट्वा सप्त महारिपून्
Seeing seven mighty enemies, who were living beings and not very strong,
नम्रीभूतश्च तान्दृष्ट्वा महेन्द्रस्तैः समन्वितः
Seeing them humbled, Mahendra joined with them.
प्रसन्ना सा दितिर्देवान्महेन्द्राय च तान्ददौ
Diti, pleased, gave those gods to Mahendra.
इलो नाम स वेदज्ञो यथेलो नृपतिस्तदा
There was a king named Ila, learned in the Vedas, known as Yathela.
एकदा बलवान्राजा मनुपुत्र इलः स्वयम्
Once, the powerful king Ila, son of Manu, acted on his own.
मेरोरधः स्थितः खण्डः स्वर्णगर्भो हरिप्रियः
The section situated to the south of Meru, called Svarṇagarbha, is dear to Hari.
इलेनावृतमेवापि कृतं तत्र स्थले सुराः
That land there was also surrounded by Ilā, and the gods established it.
भारते ये स्थिता लोका इलावृतमुपागताः 3.4.17.
The worlds that are established in Bhārata have come to Ilāvṛta.
आरोहणं नरैस्तस्मित्कृतं स्वर्णमयं शुभम्
A golden, auspicious ascent was made there by men.
