जित्वा प्राकृतभाषायाः कर्तॄन्मूढान्कलिप्रियान्
Having conquered the foolish authors of the common tongue, who delight in the age of Kali—
एकदा तु कलिर्धूर्तो हृदिस्थश्चौरकर्मणाम्
Once, the cunning Kali, abiding in the heart, engaged in the deeds of thieves—
तदा तु दुःखिता देवी गर्तमध्ये स्थितं पतिम् 3.4.9.
Then the sorrowful lady saw her husband standing in the pit.
एकस्मिन्दिवसे राजा मृगयार्थमुपागतः स पृष्टस्तेन तत्रैव कृतं केन तवेदृशम्
One day, the king came there for hunting; he was asked there, 'By whom was this done to you?'
स होवाच महाराज हस्तपादविहीनकः
He replied, 'O great king, I am one without hands and feet.'
इति श्रुत्वा धर्मपालो नृपतिस्तं द्विजोत्तमम्
Hearing this, King Dharmapala honored that best of Brahmins.
तस्य दीक्षां नृपः प्राप्य धर्मशालामकारय त् धर्मपालगृहं प्राप्य राजानमिदमब्रुवन्
Receiving his initiation, the king built a house of righteousness; having reached the house of Dharmapala, they spoke to the king as follows:
वयं हि शास्त्रनिपुणास्तव गेहमुपागताः संभुंक्ते प्रत्यहं प्रीत्या तत्पश्य नृपसत्तम
We, skilled in the scriptures, have come to your house; he eats here every day with joy—see this, O best of kings!
इत्युक्त्वा कलिभक्तास्ते विष्णुरूपं चतुर्भुजम्
Having spoken thus, those devoted to Kali beheld the four-armed form of Vishnu.
विस्मितो धर्मपालश्च जयदेवमुवाच ह अदीदृशन्हरिं साक्षात्तस्मात्त्वं शीघ्रमाव्रज
Astonished, Dharmapala then spoke to Jayadeva: 'You have seen Hari himself directly; therefore, come here quickly.'
इति श्रुत्वा द्विजः प्राप्तो विस्मितोऽभूत्तथा नृपः
Hearing this, the twice-born arrived and was amazed, as was the king.
असौ विप्रश्च नृपते गौडदेशे निवासिनः
That Brahmin and the king were both residents of the land of Gauda.
गरलं मिश्रितं भक्ष्ये तेन पाखंडरूपिणा 3.4.9.
He ate food mixed with poison by one in the guise of a heretic.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे राजन्वयं तत्र समागताः शूलात्तं हि समुत्तार्य हस्तौ पादौ नृपोऽच्छिनत्
Meanwhile, O King, we arrived there; having taken him down from the stake, the king severed his hands and feet.
अस्माकं शिष्यभूतो हि राजास्माभिः प्रबोधितः
The king, who became our disciple, was instructed by us.
चौराँस्तान्सा हि पाताले चकार सुररक्षितान्
She cast those thieves, protected by the gods, into the netherworld.
क्रंदमाने द्विजे तस्मिन्हस्तांघ्री प्रकृतिं गतौ
As that Brahmin cried out, his hands and feet returned to their natural state.
श्रुत्वा राजा प्रसन्नात्मा जयदेवमुखोद्भवम्
Hearing of Jayadeva's miraculous recovery, the king was gladdened in heart.
इति ते कथितं विप्र जयदेवो यथाभवत्
Thus, O Brahmin, the story of how Jayadeva became as he was has been told to you.
सर्वदेवमयं विष्णुं पूजयित्वा प्रसन्नधीः
Having worshipped Vishnu, who embodies all the gods, he became of serene mind.
अन्यैस्सुरैश्च संपूज्यो बभूव हरिपूजनात्
He was also honored by other gods, having worshipped Hari.
कदाचित्तस्य गेहे वै व्रती कश्चित्समागतः दृष्ट्वोवाच महाभागः स स्पर्शाढ्यो दयापरः
Once, a certain observer of vows came to his house; seeing him, the greatly fortunate one, rich in touch and full of compassion, spoke.
अनेन स्पर्शमणिना लोहधातुश्च कांचनम्
With this touchstone, iron can be turned into gold.
स्नात्वा तावत्सरय्वां चायास्यामि तेंतिकं मुदा कृत्वा लक्ष्मीं समाप्यासीद्विष्णुशर्मा तदागमत्
Having bathed in the Sarayū, I shall come to you joyfully; having performed Lakshmi's worship, Viṣṇuśarman then arrived.
बहुस्वर्णयुतां पत्नीं दृष्ट्वोवाच हरिप्रियः
Seeing his wife adorned with much gold, the devotee of Hari spoke.
अहं विष्णुपरो दीनश्चौरभीतः सदैव हि
I am devoted to Vishnu, destitute, and always fearful of thieves.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं पतिभीता पतिव्रता
Hearing those dreadful words, the devoted wife became fearful of her husband.
द्विजोऽपि घर्घरामध्ये तद्द्रव्यं बलतोऽक्षिपत् उवाच ब्राह्मणीं दीनां स्वर्णं किं न कृतं त्वया
The twice-born, in the midst of the commotion, forcibly threw down that substance and said to the distressed Brahmani, 'Why did you not make the gold?'
साह भो मत्पतिश्शुद्धो गृहीत्वा स्पर्शकं रुषा निर्लोहो वर्तते विप्रस्ततः प्रभृति हे गुरो ।। 3.4.10.
She replied, 'O sir, my husband is pure; having taken and touched it in anger, the touchstone remains without gold, O teacher, from that moment onward.'
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं स यतिर्विस्मयान्वितः
Hearing those words, the ascetic was filled with astonishment.
