कलएको मासमात्रे काले तेनैव निर्मितः विश्वकर्मा रविः साक्षान्माघमासे प्रकाशकः
A single art was created by him in just a month's time; Viśvakarma, the Sun himself, revealed it in the month of Māgha.
हेलिनो बहुलैर्यज्ञैस्सन्तुष्टः प्रत्यहं प्रभुः
The Lord was satisfied daily by many sacrifices performed by the Helis.
ज्योतीरूपो महारम्यस्तत्र प्राप्तो रविः स्वयम्
The Sun himself, radiant and exceedingly beautiful, arrived there.
भुक्त्वा स प्रत्यहं स्वामी मासिमासि दिवाकरः 3.4.9.
The Lord, the Sun, ate every day, month by month.
सहस्रायुर्द्विजो भूत्वा त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्रविः स्वयम् तं सूर्यं भज देवेन्द्र स ते कार्यं करिष्यति
Having become a Brahmin with a thousand years of life, the Sun himself relinquished his breath; worship that Sun, O Indra of the gods, he will accomplish your task.
सूर्यमाराधयामास विश्वकर्माणमुत्तमम्
He worshipped the supreme Viśvakarma, the Sun.
तदा प्रसन्नो भगवांस्त्वष्टा तुष्टिकरोजनान्
Then the blessed Tvaṣṭṛ, pleased, brought satisfaction to the people.
बिल्ग्रामे वंगदेशे संभवामि निरुक्तकृत्
In Bil village, in the land of Bengal, I will be born as the creator of Nirukta.
इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्सूर्यो वंगदेशमुपाययौ
Having spoken thus, the blessed Sun went to the land of Bengal.
स पंचाब्दवपुर्भूत्वा पितृमातृपरायणः
He became a youth of five years, devoted to his father and mother.
मृतिमंतौ च पितरौ प्रेतकृत्येन तर्पितौ
And when his parents had died, they were satisfied through the rites for the departed.
जयदेवस्तदा विप्रो भूत्वा वैराग्यवान्भुवि
At that time, Jayadeva, the learned Brahmin, became detached from worldly life.
त्रिविंशाब्दे ततः प्राप्ते केनचिन्मधुरानना
Then, when he reached the age of thirty-three, by someone with a sweet face—
अर्चावसाने भगवाननिरुद्धस्सनातनः 3.4.9.
At the end of the worship, the eternal Lord Aniruddha appeared.
शृणु त्वं भोः सत्यव्रत जयदेवो वपुर्मम
Listen, O Satyavrata! Jayadeva is my very form.
इत्युक्तस्स द्विजस्तूर्णं दृष्ट्वा वैरागरूपिणम्
Thus addressed, the Brahmin quickly saw the embodiment of detachment.
सा तु पद्मावती कन्या मत्वा तं सुंदरं पतिम्
That maiden Padmavati, considering him a handsome husband—
निरुक्तं वैदिकं चांगं कृतवान्स समाधिना षोडशादौ विकारश्च वर्णनाशः पृषोदरे
He mastered the etymology and Vedic limbs through meditation; at the beginning of the sixteenth, there was a change and the destruction of speech among the Pṛṣodaras.
वर्णविकारनाशाभ्यां धातोरतिशयेन यः
By the excess of root transformation and the destruction of speech—
एवं पंचविधान्येव निरुक्तानि स्मृतानि वै
Thus, only five kinds of etymologies are indeed remembered.
जित्वा प्राकृतभाषायाः कर्तॄन्मूढान्कलिप्रियान्
Having conquered the foolish authors of the common tongue, who delight in the age of Kali—
एकदा तु कलिर्धूर्तो हृदिस्थश्चौरकर्मणाम्
Once, the cunning Kali, abiding in the heart, engaged in the deeds of thieves—
तदा तु दुःखिता देवी गर्तमध्ये स्थितं पतिम् 3.4.9.
Then the sorrowful lady saw her husband standing in the pit.
एकस्मिन्दिवसे राजा मृगयार्थमुपागतः स पृष्टस्तेन तत्रैव कृतं केन तवेदृशम्
One day, the king came there for hunting; he was asked there, 'By whom was this done to you?'
स होवाच महाराज हस्तपादविहीनकः
He replied, 'O great king, I am one without hands and feet.'
इति श्रुत्वा धर्मपालो नृपतिस्तं द्विजोत्तमम्
Hearing this, King Dharmapala honored that best of Brahmins.
तस्य दीक्षां नृपः प्राप्य धर्मशालामकारय त् धर्मपालगृहं प्राप्य राजानमिदमब्रुवन्
Receiving his initiation, the king built a house of righteousness; having reached the house of Dharmapala, they spoke to the king as follows:
वयं हि शास्त्रनिपुणास्तव गेहमुपागताः संभुंक्ते प्रत्यहं प्रीत्या तत्पश्य नृपसत्तम
We, skilled in the scriptures, have come to your house; he eats here every day with joy—see this, O best of kings!
इत्युक्त्वा कलिभक्तास्ते विष्णुरूपं चतुर्भुजम्
Having spoken thus, those devoted to Kali beheld the four-armed form of Vishnu.
विस्मितो धर्मपालश्च जयदेवमुवाच ह अदीदृशन्हरिं साक्षात्तस्मात्त्वं शीघ्रमाव्रज
Astonished, Dharmapala then spoke to Jayadeva: 'You have seen Hari himself directly; therefore, come here quickly.'
