इति श्रुत्वा तथा कृत्वा डिंडिमध्वनिना पुरे
Hearing this and acting accordingly, the sound of drums resounded in the city.
अक्रीतं यस्य वै वस्तु हाटेऽस्मिन्वैश्यकोविदैः
Whatever goods were unsold in this market by the expert merchants—
इति श्रुत्वा शूद्रजनाश्चक्रुर्नानाविधं वसु
Hearing this, the people of the Śūdra class brought forth various kinds of wealth.
एकदा लोहकारश्च दारिद्रं लोहरूपिणम्
Once, a blacksmith, poor and in the form of iron—
अक्रीतं पुरुषं राजा ज्ञात्वा लोहदरिद्रकम् कोशागारे तदा राज्ञा स्थापितोभूद्दरिद्रकः
The king, knowing the man who was unsold and poor in iron, placed that poor man in the royal treasury.
निशीथे तम उद्भूते कर्म धर्मश्च मा तथा
At midnight, when darkness arose, do not act thus regarding duty and action.
तत्पश्चात्सत्यपुरुषो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् कर्मणा रहितो धर्मो भूतले न स्थिरो भवेत्
After that, the truthful person said this to the king: Without action, righteousness cannot remain firm upon the earth.
धर्मेण रहिता लक्ष्मीर्न शोभेत कदाचन
Without righteousness, prosperity never appears beautiful at any time.
इत्युक्त्वा गन्तुमिच्छंतं गृहीत्वा करयोर्नृपः
Having spoken thus, as he wished to depart, the king took hold of his hands.
न त्याज्यो हि मया देव भवान्किङ्गन्तुमर्हति 3.4.8.
O lord, you are not to be abandoned by me; why do you wish to go?
तत्पश्चाच्च स्वयं लक्ष्मीस्तद्गेहे गंतुमुद्यता
Then, afterwards, prosperity herself prepared to go to his house.
अचला भव भो मातस्तर्हि मन्मदिरं व्रज
O mother, then remain unmoving, or else go to the intoxicating one.
पुरोधसं तं गणकं समाहूय नृपोत्तमः
The best of kings summoned that priestly astrologer.
पुत्रजन्मनि काले तु संप्राप्तं तेन वै धनम्
At the time of the son's birth, wealth indeed came to him.
पूषा नाम ततो जातं मार्गशीर्षे शुभे दिने
Then a son named Pūṣā was born on an auspicious day in Mārgaśīrṣa.
सूर्ये तु मोक्षमगमद्देवदेवप्रसादतः
By the grace of the god of gods, he attained liberation in the sun.
पूषा नाम वचो देवानुवाच मधुरस्वरम्
The one named Pūṣā spoke sweetly to the gods.
उज्जयिन्यामहं देवा यास्ये रुद्रपशोर्गृहे
O gods, I shall go to Ujjayinī, to the house of Rudrapaśu.
इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्पूषा पुत्रो जातो द्विजस्य वै
Having spoken thus, the blessed Pūṣā was born as the son of the twice-born.
जातमात्रं च तं पुत्रं पिता काष्ठकटाहके 3.4.8.
As soon as that son was born, his father placed him in a wooden bowl.
समुद्रमगमत्पुत्रो राक्षसीभिश्च रक्षितः
The son reached the ocean, protected by demonesses.
जातकं फलितं चैव मूकप्रश्नं तथादितः
The horoscope was fulfilled, and thus began the mute question.
भक्तराज नमस्तुभ्यं विभीषण हरि प्रिय
O king of devotees, salutations to you, Vibhīṣaṇa, beloved of Hari.
इति श्रुत्वा च स नृपो वैष्णवं द्विजमुत्तमम्
Hearing this, the king honored the excellent Vaiṣṇava brāhmaṇa.
म्लेच्छैर्विनाशितं यत्तु वेदांगं ज्योतिषां गतिः
The course of Jyotisha, the limb of the Vedas, has been destroyed by the mlecchas.
सूत उवाच प्रयागे तु पुनर्देवानुवाच वचसां पतिः
Sūta said: At Prayāga, the lord of speech again addressed the gods.
प्रतिष्ठानपुरे रम्ये सूर्यो जातो हराज्ञया
In the beautiful city of Pratiṣṭhāna, the Sun was born by the command of Hara.
त्रेतान्ते सिंहलद्वीपे परीक्षितनृपोऽभवत्
At the end of the Tretā age, King Parīkṣita appeared on the island of Siṃhala.
कन्या भानुमती तस्य सूर्यव्रतपरायणा
His daughter Bhānumatī was devoted to the vow of the Sun.
तया कृतं शुभं भक्ष्यं मध्याह्ने भुक्तवान्प्रभुः
The lord ate the auspicious food prepared by her at midday.
