शतायुर्ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा ज्ञानवान्रोगवर्जितः 3.4.8.
Becoming a Brahmin with a lifespan of a hundred years, he was wise and free from disease.
कार्तिके मासि लक्षाब्दं प्रकाशं कृतवान्नभः
In the month of Kartika, for a hundred thousand years, he made the sky radiant.
पूजयित्वा विधानेन पूर्णिमायां ददर्श ह
Having worshipped according to the rite on the full moon, he beheld (the deity).
उवाच शक्रं स रविर्देवकार्यं करोम्यहम्
The Sun spoke to Indra, saying, 'I am performing the work of the gods.'
धातुपाठो न्यपठितो भ्रंशार्थः स्वरवर्णकः
The recitation of the elements was performed, but there was an error in the pronunciation of the vowels.
इत्युक्त्वा स गतः काश्यां गेहे वै वेदशर्मणः
Having spoken thus, he departed to Kashi, to the house of Vedasharma.
द्वादशाब्दवपुर्भूत्वा सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः
Assuming a twelve-year-old form, he became skilled in all the scriptures.
त्रिवर्षान्ते च भगवांस्तस्मै ज्ञानं महद्ददौ
And at the end of three years, the Blessed Lord bestowed great knowledge upon him.
ज्ञातं कार्यगुणेनैव दीक्षितेन तदा हृदि
At that time, the initiated one knows it in his heart by the quality of the act.
व्यक्तेऽहंकारभूते च बुद्धिर्ज्ञेया बुधैरजा
The intellect, when manifest and identified with ego, is to be understood by the wise as unborn.
अव्यक्तं तु परं ब्रह्म व्यक्तं शब्दमयं स्मृतम् 3.4.8.
The unmanifest is the supreme Brahman; the manifest is said to be composed of sound.
वृषरूपधरो मुख्यो नन्दियानः स्मृतो बुधैः
The foremost, bearing the form of a bull, is known by the wise as Nandiyāna.
सप्तहस्तस्त्रिधा बद्धो नित्यशुद्धो मुखे स्थितः
With seven hands, bound in three ways, ever pure, he is established at the mouth.
द्वौद्वौ शृंगौ च शिरसोर्नंदियानस्य वै स्मृतौ
It is remembered that Nandiyāna has two horns on his head.
रूढिश्च योगरूढिश्च शब्दौ तस्य शिरोद्वयम्
Rūḍhi and Yogarūḍhi are the two names for his two heads.
संवंधश्चाधिकारश्च भुजास्तस्य वृषस्य वै
Connection and authority are said to be the arms of that bull.
ताभ्यां बद्धश्च स वृषो नन्दियानाथ ते नमः
By those two, the bull is bound; O Nandiyāna, I bow to you.
जातश्च वृषलिंगाभ्यां सोऽहंकारो हरिः स्वयम्
And from the two bull-forms is born the ego, which is Hari himself.
इति ज्ञानं हृदि प्राप्य तदा सिद्धान्तकौमुदीम्
Thus, having attained this knowledge in the heart, one reaches the Siddhānta-Kaumudī.
एकदा गणको धीमान्सत्यदत्तमुवाच ह हाटं कुरु महाराज सांप्रतं बहुवृत्तिदम् ।। 3.4.8.
Once, the wise astrologer spoke to Satyadatta: 'O great king, now establish a market that yields many profits.'
इति श्रुत्वा तथा कृत्वा डिंडिमध्वनिना पुरे
Hearing this and acting accordingly, the sound of drums resounded in the city.
अक्रीतं यस्य वै वस्तु हाटेऽस्मिन्वैश्यकोविदैः
Whatever goods were unsold in this market by the expert merchants—
इति श्रुत्वा शूद्रजनाश्चक्रुर्नानाविधं वसु
Hearing this, the people of the Śūdra class brought forth various kinds of wealth.
एकदा लोहकारश्च दारिद्रं लोहरूपिणम्
Once, a blacksmith, poor and in the form of iron—
अक्रीतं पुरुषं राजा ज्ञात्वा लोहदरिद्रकम् कोशागारे तदा राज्ञा स्थापितोभूद्दरिद्रकः
The king, knowing the man who was unsold and poor in iron, placed that poor man in the royal treasury.
निशीथे तम उद्भूते कर्म धर्मश्च मा तथा
At midnight, when darkness arose, do not act thus regarding duty and action.
तत्पश्चात्सत्यपुरुषो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् कर्मणा रहितो धर्मो भूतले न स्थिरो भवेत्
After that, the truthful person said this to the king: Without action, righteousness cannot remain firm upon the earth.
धर्मेण रहिता लक्ष्मीर्न शोभेत कदाचन
Without righteousness, prosperity never appears beautiful at any time.
इत्युक्त्वा गन्तुमिच्छंतं गृहीत्वा करयोर्नृपः
Having spoken thus, as he wished to depart, the king took hold of his hands.
न त्याज्यो हि मया देव भवान्किङ्गन्तुमर्हति 3.4.8.
O lord, you are not to be abandoned by me; why do you wish to go?
