ददौ तस्यै वरं विष्णुर्भवितास्मि सुतः कलौ ।।3.4.6.
Vishnu granted her a boon: 'In the age of Kali, I shall become your son.'
त्वदाज्ञया च सा देवी पुरीं शांतिमयीं शुभाम्
By your command, that goddess will enter the auspicious city filled with peace.
प्रत्यागत्य द्विजो भूत्वा कार्यसिद्धिं करिष्यति
Returning there, she will become a Brahmin and accomplish her purpose.
इति श्रुत्वा गुरोर्वाक्यं रुद्रैरेकादशैः सह
Having heard the words of the teacher, together with the eleven Rudras,
तीर्थराजमुपागम्य प्रयागं च रविप्रियम्
They approached the king of sacred places, Prayaga, beloved of the Sun.
बृहस्पतिस्तदागत्य सूर्यमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्
Then Brihaspati arrived and spoke of the supreme glory of the Sun.
ऋषय ऊचुः बृहस्पतिस्तु भगवान्मुनिर्देवान्समास्थितान्
The sages said: Brihaspati, the revered sage, was present among the assembled gods.
तत्सर्वं कृपया ब्रह्मन्ब्रूहि नस्तत्समुत्सुकान्
O Brahman, out of compassion, tell us all of this, for we are eager to hear.
बृहस्पतिं समासीनं जीवरूपं गुणालयम्
Brihaspati, seated there, embodied life and was a repository of virtues.
कथयस्व महाभाग सूर्यमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्
Tell us, O greatly fortunate one, the supreme glory of the Sun.
बृहस्पतिरुवाच तपसा तोषयामास बर्हिष्मतिपुरे स्थितः
Brihaspati said: By austerity, he pleased the Lord while residing in the city of Barhishmati.
पंचमाब्दे तु भगवान्संतुष्टश्च प्रजापतिः
In the fifth year, the Lord, Prajapati, was satisfied.
वर्षांतरे जनयित्वा त्र्यपत्य स द्विजोत्तमः
After an interval of years, that foremost Brahmin begot three children.
विवाहाश्च कथं तेषां भवितव्या महोत्तमाः
How will their marriages, of great excellence, take place?
हवनैस्तोषयामास वर्षमात्रविधानतः
He pleased them with offerings, according to the prescribed yearly rites.
प्रसन्नस्तु तदा विप्रो वधूर्जामातरं मुदा 3.4.7.
Then the Brahmin, being pleased, joyfully gave his daughter and son-in-law.
भूषणानि च वासांसि धनानि विविधानि च
Ornaments, garments, and various kinds of wealth,
षष्टिवर्षमयो भूत्वा चंदनाद्यैर्धनाधिपम्
Having reached sixty years of age, he honored the lord of wealth with sandal and other offerings.
तदा प्रसन्नो भगवान्ददौ तस्मै धनं बहु
Then, the blessed Lord, being pleased, gave him abundant wealth.
सहस्रजापी संपूज्य हवनं तद्दशांशकम्
He, performing a thousand recitations and worship, offered one-tenth of that in the fire sacrifice.
इत्येवं वर्तमानस्य गतः कालो महान्स्वयम्
Thus, as he continued in this way, a long time passed by itself.
पीडितस्तु रुजा विप्रः शंकरं लोकशंकरम् मासमात्रेण भगवान्ददौ ज्ञानं स्वयं हरः
Afflicted by pain, the brahmin sought Śaṅkara, the benefactor of the world; within just a month, the blessed Hara himself granted him knowledge.
धातृशर्मा तु तत्प्राप्य भास्करं मोहनाशनम्
Dhātṛśarmā, having attained that, approached Bhāskara, the dispeller of delusion.
पंचाब्दे भगवान्सूर्यो भक्तिभावेन वत्सलः
For five years, the blessed Sun, affectionate through devotion,
धातृशर्मा तु तच्छ्रुत्वा भास्करं मोहनाशनम्
Dhātṛśarmā, having heard that, approached Bhāskara, the dispeller of delusion.
रात्रिरूपा प्रवृत्तिश्च निवृत्तिर्दिनरूपिणी 3.4.7.
Night is of the nature of activity, and cessation is of the form of day.
अव्यक्ते तु स्थितं तेजो भवतो दिव्यसूक्ष्मकम्
In the unmanifest abides your divine, subtle radiance.
राजसी या स्मृता बुद्धिस्तत्पतिर्भगवान्विधिः
That intellect which is called rājasī, its lord is the blessed Vidhi.
सात्त्विकी या तनौ बुद्धिस्तत्पतिर्भगवान्हरिः
That intellect which is sāttvikī in the body, its lord is the blessed Hari.
तामसी मोहना बुद्धिस्तत्पतिश्च स्वयं शिवः देहि मे भगवन्मोक्षं संज्ञाकांत नमोनमः
That intellect which is tāmasī and deluding, its lord is Śiva himself. O blessed one, grant me liberation, O beautiful-named one, I bow to you.
