पाषंडा बहुजातीया नानामार्गप्रदर्शकाः 3.4.6.
Heretics of many kinds, showing various paths,
इति दृष्ट्वा तु मुनयो रोमहर्षणमंतिके
Seeing this, the sages gathered near Romaharṣaṇa.
तैश्च तत्र स्तुतः सूतो योगनिद्रां सनातनीम् तच्छृणुष्व नृपश्रेष्ठ यथा सूतेन वर्णितम्
Praised there by them, the Sūta recounted the eternal yogic sleep; hear this, O best of kings, as told by the Sūta.
तच्छृणुध्वं मुनिश्रेष्ठा लक्षाब्दांते यथाभवत्
Hear this, O best of sages, as it happened at the end of a hundred thousand years.
मुकुलान्वयसंभूतो म्लेच्छभूपः पिशाचकः
A king of the Mlecchas, a Piśāca, was born in the lineage of Mukula.
आर्यान्म्लेच्छांस्तदा भूपाञ्जित्वा कालस्वरूपकः
Then, having conquered the Āryas and the kings, that one, a form of Time, subdued the Mlecchas.
आहूय सकलान्विप्रानार्यदेशनिवासिनः
He summoned all the Brāhmaṇas dwelling in the land of the Āryas.
निर्मिता येन वा मूर्तिस्तस्य पुत्रीसमा स्मृता विष्णुदेवश्च युष्माभिः प्रोक्तः स तु न वै हरिः
The image made by him is considered like his daughter; and the god Viṣṇu whom you speak of, he is not truly Hari.
अतो वः सकला वेदाः शास्त्राणि विविधानि च इत्युक्त्वा तान्बलाद्गृह्य ज्वलदग्नौ समाक्षिपत्
Therefore, all your Vedas and various scriptures—having said this, he seized them by force and cast them into the blazing fire.
शालग्रामशिलाः सर्वा बलात्तेषां सुपूज्यकाः
All the Śālagrāma stones, by force, became highly revered among them.
तैत्तिरं देशमागम्य दुर्गं तत्र चकार सः 3.4.6.
Coming to the land of the Taittirīyas, he built a fortress there.
तदा तु सकला देवा दुःखिता वासवं प्रभुम्
Then all the gods, distressed, approached the mighty Vāsava.
वयं तु भगवन्सर्वे शालग्रामशिलास्थिताः शालग्रामशिलामध्ये वसामो मुदिता वयम्
O Lord, we all dwell within the Śālagrāma stones; we reside joyfully in the midst of the Śālagrāma stones.
शिलास्सर्वाश्च नो देव शालदेशसमुद्भवाः
All these stones of ours, O god, originate from the land of Śāla.
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं देवानां भगवान्स्वराट्
Hearing these words of the gods, the blessed sovereign—
चुकोप भगवानिन्द्रो दैत्यान्प्रत्यभ्रवाहनः तैत्तिरे प्रेषयामास देशे म्लेच्छनिवासके
The blessed Indra became angry and drove away the demons; he sent them to the Taittirīya land, the dwelling place of the Mlecchas.
तस्य शब्देन सकला देशाश्च बहुभिन्नकाः
By his sound, all the lands became greatly divided.
शालग्रामशिलाः सर्वा गृहीत्वा विबुधास्तदा
Then the gods took all the Śālagrāma stones.
महेन्द्रस्तु सुरैः सार्द्धं देवपूज्यमुवाच ह
Mahendra, together with the gods, spoke words worthy of worship by the deities.
वेदधर्मं समुल्लंघ्य मम नाशनतत्पराः
Having transgressed the Vedic law, they are intent on my destruction.
ददौ तस्यै वरं विष्णुर्भवितास्मि सुतः कलौ ।।3.4.6.
Vishnu granted her a boon: 'In the age of Kali, I shall become your son.'
त्वदाज्ञया च सा देवी पुरीं शांतिमयीं शुभाम्
By your command, that goddess will enter the auspicious city filled with peace.
प्रत्यागत्य द्विजो भूत्वा कार्यसिद्धिं करिष्यति
Returning there, she will become a Brahmin and accomplish her purpose.
इति श्रुत्वा गुरोर्वाक्यं रुद्रैरेकादशैः सह
Having heard the words of the teacher, together with the eleven Rudras,
तीर्थराजमुपागम्य प्रयागं च रविप्रियम्
They approached the king of sacred places, Prayaga, beloved of the Sun.
बृहस्पतिस्तदागत्य सूर्यमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्
Then Brihaspati arrived and spoke of the supreme glory of the Sun.
ऋषय ऊचुः बृहस्पतिस्तु भगवान्मुनिर्देवान्समास्थितान्
The sages said: Brihaspati, the revered sage, was present among the assembled gods.
तत्सर्वं कृपया ब्रह्मन्ब्रूहि नस्तत्समुत्सुकान्
O Brahman, out of compassion, tell us all of this, for we are eager to hear.
बृहस्पतिं समासीनं जीवरूपं गुणालयम्
Brihaspati, seated there, embodied life and was a repository of virtues.
कथयस्व महाभाग सूर्यमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्
Tell us, O greatly fortunate one, the supreme glory of the Sun.
