उपविश्यासने विप्रो राजानमिदमब्रवीत्
The Brahmin sat upon a seat and spoke these words to the king.

शिवं मनसि संस्थाप्य राज्ञानमिदमब्रवीत् वाराणसी पुरी रम्या महेशो यत्र तिष्ठति
Having established Shiva in his mind, he spoke to the king: 'The delightful city of Varanasi is where Mahesha abides.'
चातुर्वर्ण्यप्रजा यत्र प्रतापमुकुटो नृपः
There, the people of four castes dwell, and the king wears a crown of glory.
तत्पुत्रो वज्रमुकुटो मंत्रिणः सुतवल्लभाः
His son, Vajramukuta, is beloved of the ministers and their sons.
अमात्यतनयश्चैव बुद्धिदक्ष इति श्रुतः
The minister's son, known as Buddhidaksha, is famed for his wisdom and skill.
स दृष्ट्वा विपिनं रम्यं मृगपक्षिसमन्वितम्
He beheld a charming forest, teeming with animals and birds.
तत्र दिव्यं सरो रम्यं नानापक्षिनिनादितम्
There was a divine and delightful lake, resounding with the cries of various birds.
दृष्ट्वा तत्र गतौ वीरौ परमानंदमापतुः
Seeing it, the two heroes who arrived there attained supreme joy.
दंतवक्त्रस्य तनया नाम्ना पद्मावती मता
The daughter of Dantavaktra, known as Padmavati, was esteemed.
चिक्रीड सखिभिः क्रीडां सरोमध्ये मनोहरा 3.2.1.
She played with her companions, engaging in delightful games in the midst of the lake.
दृष्ट्वा पद्मावतीं बालां तुल्यरूपगुणान्विताम्
Beholding Padmavati, the maiden endowed with equal beauty and virtues.
प्रबुद्धो वज्रमुकुटो मां पाहि शिवशंकर १२ शिरसः पद्मकुसुमं सा गृहीत्वा तु कर्णयोः
Awakened, Vajramukuta prayed, 'Protect me, Shiva Shankara.' She took a lotus flower from his head and placed it at her ears.
पुनर्गृहीत्वा तत्पुष्पं हृदये संप्रवेशितम्
Taking that flower again, she placed it within her heart.
तीर्थार्थं च समं पित्रा संप्राप्ता गिरिजावने
Together with his father, he arrived in the forest of the mountain for the sake of pilgrimage.
महतीं मानसीं पीडां प्राप्तवान्मोहमागतः
He experienced great mental anguish and fell into delusion.
ध्यात्वा पद्मावतीं बालां मौनव्रतमचीकरत्
Meditating on the young Padmavati, he undertook a vow of silence.
कुमारः कां दशां प्राप्त इति हाहेति सर्वतः
People everywhere lamented, saying, 'What condition has the prince come to?'
अब्रवीद्वज्रमुकुटं सत्यं कथय भूपते
He said to Vajramukuta, 'O king, speak the truth.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा बुद्धिदक्षश्च विहस्याह महीपतिम् 3.2.1.
Hearing this, the wise Buddhidaksha laughed and spoke to the king.
करणाटकभूपस्य दंतवक्त्रस्य सा सुता
She is the daughter of Dantavaktra, the king of Karnata.
पुष्पभावेन ज्ञात्वाहं त्वां नयामि तदंतिके
Recognizing you by the sign of the flower, I will bring you to her presence.
आहाज्ञां देहि भूपाल यास्येहं कारणाटके
'Give the order, O king; I will go to Karnata.'
आयामि नाऽत्र सन्देहो यदि जीवयसे सुतम्
'I will go—there is no doubt—if you wish your son to live.'
हयारूढौ गतौ शीघ्रं दंतवक्त्रस्य पत्तने
Mounted on horses, they quickly went to the city of Dantavaktra.
बहुद्रव्यं ददौ तस्यै बुद्धिदक्षो विशारदः
The wise Buddhidaksha gave her much wealth.
प्रातःकाले तु सा वृद्धा गच्छती राजमन्दिरम्
In the morning, that old woman went to the royal palace.
पद्मावतीं च संप्राप्यैकांते मद्वचनं वद
Having reached Padmavati in private, she spoke my message.
यो दृष्टः पुरुषो रम्यस्त्वदर्थे समुपागतः
'A handsome man, seen for your sake, has come here.'
रुष्टा पद्मावती प्राह चंदनार्द्रांगुलीयिका 3.2.1.
Padmavati, angry, spoke while her fingers were moist with sandalwood.
