याममात्रेण रामांशो हत्वा तस्य महागजम्
Within a single watch, the Rāma-portion slew his great elephant.
त्रियाममात्रेण तदा सायंकाले समागते
Then, within three watches, as evening approached,
तदा वेला महाशत्रुं तारकं बलवत्तरम्
At that time, Velā confronted the great enemy, the exceedingly powerful Tāraka.
चितां कृत्वा विधानेन सा देवी द्रुपदात्मजा
Having prepared the funeral pyre according to the rite, that goddess, the daughter of Drupada,
तेन सार्द्धं च सा शुद्धा श्वशुरस्याज्ञया मुदा
With him, she remained pure, by the joyful command of her father-in-law.
तच्चितायां च भर्तारमिंदुलं बलवत्तरम्
On that funeral pyre, her husband, Indula, became even more powerful.
रात्रौ परिमलो राजा लक्षणेन समन्वितः 3.3.32.
At night, King Parimala, endowed with auspicious marks, appeared.
सपादलक्षाश्च तदा हतशेषा महाबलाः
At that time, of the great warriors, one and a quarter lakhs remained slain.
धान्यपालः शतं भूपाँल्लक्षणश्च तथा शतम्
Dhānyapāla killed a hundred kings, and Lakṣaṇa likewise slew a hundred.
महीराजस्तदा दुःखी ध्यात्वा रुद्रं महेश्वरम् एकाकी गजमारुह्य ययौ चादिभयंकरम्
Then the earth-king, distressed, meditated on Rudra, the great lord; alone, mounting an elephant, he went to the dreadful battle.
रुद्रदत्तेन बाणेन हत्वा परिमलं नृपम् लक्षणान्तमुपागम्य महद्युद्धमचीकरत्
With an arrow given by Rudra, he slew King Parimala, and approaching Lakṣaṇa, he engaged in a great battle.
महीराजस्य रौद्रास्त्रैस्सैन्यास्सर्वे क्षयं गताः
By the earth-king's fierce weapons, all the armies were destroyed.
तदा तु लक्षणो वीरो वैष्णवास्त्रं समादधे तेनास्त्रतेजसा राजा महासंतापमाप्तवान्
Then the hero Lakṣaṇa took up the Vaiṣṇava weapon; by the power of that weapon, the king was overcome with great anguish.
ध्यात्वा रुद्रं महादेवं त्यक्त्वा विद्यां च वैष्णवीम्
Meditating on Rudra, the great god, he abandoned the Vaiṣṇava knowledge.
हस्तिनी च तदा रुष्टा गजमादिभयंकरम्
Then the enraged elephantess attacked the dreadful elephant.
उषःकाले च संप्राप्ते मलना पतिमुत्तमम्
At the coming of dawn, Malanā obtained an excellent husband.
तदा तु देवकी शुद्धं लक्षणं बलवत्तरम् 3.3.32.
Then Devakī found Lakṣaṇa, pure and exceedingly strong.
प्रभाते विमले जाते चतुर्थे भौमवासरे ध्यात्वा सर्वमयीं देवीं स्थिरीभूय स्वयं स्थितः
When the clear morning of the fourth Tuesday arrived, having meditated on the all-pervading goddess, he stood firm by himself.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र कलिर्भार्यासमन्वितः
Meanwhile, there, Kali arrived together with his wife.
योगेश्वराय शुद्धाय महावतीनिवासिने
To the pure Lord of Yogis, the resident of Mahāvati,
रामांशस्त्वं महाबाहो मम पालनतत्परः
You are a portion of Rāma, O mighty-armed one, ever intent on my protection.
राजानः पावकीयाश्च तपोबलसमन्विताः योगमध्ये समासीनो नमस्तस्मै महात्मने
The kings, born of fire and endowed with the power of austerity, seated in meditation, homage to that great soul.
तेषां सैन्याः षष्टिलक्षाः क्रमाद्वीर त्वया हताः
O hero, sixty lakhs of their soldiers were successively slain by you.
इति श्रुत्वा स आह्लादो वचनं प्राह निर्भयः
Hearing this, he rejoiced and spoke these words without fear.
पुनस्ते कार्यमतुलं करिष्यामि शृणुष्व भोः तस्य नेत्रे मया शुद्धे कर्तव्ये नीलरूपके
Again I shall accomplish an unparalleled deed—listen, O sir: I must purify his eyes, which have become dark in appearance.
तव प्रियः सदा नीलस्तथैव च मम प्रियः
Blue is always dear to you, and likewise, it is dear to me.
इत्युक्त्वा स तु रामांशो गजमारुह्य वेगतः 3.3.32.
Having spoken thus, that portion of Rāma swiftly mounted the elephant.
रुद्रदत्तो गजस्तूर्णं पंचशब्दमुपस्थितः
Rudradatta's elephant quickly arrived, producing five kinds of sounds.
अन्योन्येन तथा हत्वा गजौ स्वर्गमुपेयतुः
Thus, after fighting with each other, both elephants ascended to heaven.
तदा भयातुरो राजा त्यक्त्वा युद्धं भयंकरम्
Then the king, overwhelmed by fear, abandoned the dreadful battle.
