लल्लसिंहोयुतैस्सार्द्धं गुहिलं प्रति सोऽगमत्
Lallasiṃha, with tens of thousands, advanced against Guhila.
क्षुद्रभूपाः क्षुद्रभूपांस्त्रिशतानि समाययुः
Minor kings, three hundred in number, assembled against other minor kings.
चामुंडस्तु तदा दृष्ट्वा मृतकान्सर्वभूपतीन्
Then Cāmuṇḍa, seeing all the kings slain,
लक्षणो रक्तबीजं तं ज्ञात्वा ब्राह्मणसंमतम्
Lakṣaṇa, recognizing that Raktabīja was esteemed by the brāhmaṇas,
सायंकाले तु संप्राप्ते लक्षणो हस्तिनीस्थितः
When evening came, Lakṣaṇa stood upon an elephant.
द्वितीयायां प्रभाते च कृष्णांशो देवसंयुतः
And at dawn on the second day, Kṛṣṇāṃśa, accompanied by the gods,
तारकश्च सचामुंडो द्विलक्षबलसंयुतः 3.3.32.
Tāraka and Cāmuṇḍa, each possessing two hundred thousand troops,
पुरस्कृत्य ,नृपान्सर्वान्ससैन्यौ बलवत्तरौ
Having placed all the kings at the forefront, those two mighty ones with their armies,
याममात्रेण तौ वीरौ हत्वा सर्वमहीपतीन्
Within the span of a single watch, those two heroes slew all the earth’s rulers.
चामुंडस्तारको धूर्तः संप्राप्तौ छिद्रदर्शिनौ
Cāmuṇḍa and Tāraka, cunning and keen to find an opening, approached.
तेषां त्रियाममात्रेण संबभूव महान्रणः तलप्रहारेण रिपुं मूर्च्छयामास वीर्यवान्
Within three watches, a great battle arose among them; with a blow from his palm, the valiant one caused his foe to swoon.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरस्तारको देवसिंहकम्
Meanwhile, the hero Tāraka seized Devasiṃhaka.
तच्छब्दात्स च चामुंडस्त्यक्त्वा मूर्छां महाबलः तयोर्गृहीत्वा शिरसी महीराजमुपाययौ
Hearing that sound, Cāmuṇḍa, of great strength, cast off his faint and, seizing their heads, went to the king of the earth.
महीराजस्तु ते दृष्ट्वा परमानंदनिर्भरः
The king of the earth, seeing them, was filled with supreme joy.
लक्षणस्य तदा सैन्ये हाहाशब्दो महानभूत् ब्रह्मानंदस्तदा मूर्च्छां त्यक्त्वा वेलामुवाच ह
Then, in Lakṣaṇa’s army, a great cry of ‘Alas!’ arose; Brahmānanda, having cast off his swoon, spoke to Velā.
प्रिये गच्छ रणं शीघ्रं हरिनागरमास्थिता
‘Dear one, go swiftly to battle, for Harināgara is occupied.’
इति श्रुत्वा तु सा वेला रामांशेन समन्विता 3.3.32.
Hearing this, Velā, endowed with a portion of Rāma, (set out).
श्रुत्वा स लक्षणो वीरस्तालनेन समन्वितः
Hearing this, the hero Lakṣaṇa, accompanied by Tālanena, (set out).
तृतीयायां प्रभाते च तारको बलवत्तरः
At dawn on the third day, Tāraka became even mightier.
रक्तबीजश्च चामुंडो रामांशो बलवत्तरः
Raktabīja, Cāmuṇḍa, and the Rāma-portion became exceedingly strong.
याममात्रेण रामांशो हत्वा तस्य महागजम्
Within a single watch, the Rāma-portion slew his great elephant.
त्रियाममात्रेण तदा सायंकाले समागते
Then, within three watches, as evening approached,
तदा वेला महाशत्रुं तारकं बलवत्तरम्
At that time, Velā confronted the great enemy, the exceedingly powerful Tāraka.
चितां कृत्वा विधानेन सा देवी द्रुपदात्मजा
Having prepared the funeral pyre according to the rite, that goddess, the daughter of Drupada,
तेन सार्द्धं च सा शुद्धा श्वशुरस्याज्ञया मुदा
With him, she remained pure, by the joyful command of her father-in-law.
तच्चितायां च भर्तारमिंदुलं बलवत्तरम्
On that funeral pyre, her husband, Indula, became even more powerful.
रात्रौ परिमलो राजा लक्षणेन समन्वितः 3.3.32.
At night, King Parimala, endowed with auspicious marks, appeared.
सपादलक्षाश्च तदा हतशेषा महाबलाः
At that time, of the great warriors, one and a quarter lakhs remained slain.
धान्यपालः शतं भूपाँल्लक्षणश्च तथा शतम्
Dhānyapāla killed a hundred kings, and Lakṣaṇa likewise slew a hundred.
महीराजस्तदा दुःखी ध्यात्वा रुद्रं महेश्वरम् एकाकी गजमारुह्य ययौ चादिभयंकरम्
Then the earth-king, distressed, meditated on Rudra, the great lord; alone, mounting an elephant, he went to the dreadful battle.
