अवाप मूर्छां च स पंचशब्दस्तदाशु भूपं प्रति मंडलीकः जगाम पद्भ्यां स रिपुप्रमाथी यत्र स्थितश्चेन्दुल उग्रधन्वा
At that moment, Maṇḍalīka, uttering five sounds, swiftly approached the king; the destroyer of enemies went on foot to where the fierce-armed Cendula was stationed.
उत्थाप्य पुत्रं च विलप्यमानां पत्नीं स्वकीयां प्रति चाजगाम
He raised his son and went to his own wife, who was lamenting.
स लक्षणः खड्गवरेण बाणान्रिपोश्च छित्त्वा निजवैष्णवास्त्रम्
That Lakṣaṇa, with his excellent sword, cut down the king’s arrows and employed his own Vaiṣṇava weapon.
हते च तस्मिन्निजमुख्यबंधौ सभूमिराजश्च गृहीतचापः
When his chief kinsman was slain, the king of the earth, taking up his bow, stood ready.
स मूर्छितः शुक्ल कुलेषु सूर्यस्तदोदयो वै भगदत्तमेव
He fainted among the noble families; the sun’s rising was like Bhagadatta himself.
भयान्वितस्तं च विलोक्य राजा जवेन दुद्राव च रक्तबीजम्
Seeing him filled with fear, the king fled swiftly, his seed red with blood.
बाणेन शीघ्रं स च मूर्च्छयित्वा पुनश्च देवं च स मूर्छयित्वा 3.3.32.
He quickly struck with an arrow, causing fainting, and again caused the god to faint.
प्रधाय चापे च स वैष्णवास्त्रं प्रचोदयामास च रक्तबीजे भयान्वितः स्वैश्च युतो ययौ वै यत्र स्थिता भूपतयः सकोपाः
Placing the Vaiṣṇava weapon on his bow, he directed it at Raktabīja; filled with fear and accompanied by his own men, he went to where the angry kings were assembled.
विलोक्य शत्रुं च स रत्नभानोः सुतो ययौ वै शिबिराणि युक्तः प्रातश्च काले स च चंद्रवंशी विलोक्य शुक्लान्वयमाह भूपम्
Seeing the enemy, the son of Ratnabhānu went to the camps, accompanied; in the morning, the Chandravanshi, seeing the noble ones, addressed the king.
अये गु्र्जरदेशीय मूलवर्मन्सुतैः सह
O you of Gurjara land, together with the sons of Mūlavarman—
इत्युक्तः स तु भूपालो युद्धभूमिमुपाययौ
Thus addressed, the king proceeded to the battlefield.
दशपुत्रान्वितो युद्धे सैन्य लक्षेण संयुत्ः
Accompanied by ten sons, he entered the battle, supported by an army of a hundred thousand.
हतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु तौ नृपौ ससुतैर्बलौ
When all those were slain, the two kings, with their sons and forces, remained.
मार्गकृष्णचतुर्दश्यां प्रभाते विमले रवौ लक्षणानुज्ञया प्राप्तस्तस्मिन्युधि भयानके
On the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, in the morning when the sun shone clear, by Lakṣaṇa’s permission, he arrived at that dreadful battle.
मद्रकेशस्तदा राजा दशपुत्रसमन्वितः परस्परं हताः सर्वे दिनान्ते क्षत्रिया रणे
Then the king of Madra, accompanied by his ten sons, all the Kṣatriyas were slain mutually at the end of the day in battle.
पुनः प्रभाते विमले भगदत्तो महाबली
Again, in the clear morning, Bhagadatta, mighty in strength—
दृष्ट्वा तं लक्षणो वीरस्त्रिलक्षबलसंयुतः 3.3.32.
Seeing him, Lakṣaṇa, the hero, accompanied by three hundred thousand warriors—
अपराह्णे हताः सर्वे सैनिका नृपयोस्तदा
In the afternoon, all the soldiers of the two kings were slain.
लक्षणो रथमारुह्य स्वपितुः शत्रुजं नृपम्
Lakṣaṇa, mounting his chariot, confronted the king who was the enemy of his father.
भगदत्तस्तदा क्रुद्धो विरथं तं चकार ह हत्वा हयांस्तथा सूतं भगदत्तमुपाययौ
Then Bhagadatta, enraged, rendered him chariotless, having slain his horses and charioteer, and advanced toward Bhagadatta.
मर्दयित्वा च तच्चर्म च्छित्त्वा वर्म तदुद्भवम्
Having crushed that shield and cut through the armor that emerged from it,
संध्याकाले हते तस्मिँल्लक्षणस्त्वरयान्वितः
At dusk, when he was slain, Lakṣaṇa, filled with urgency,
भगदत्ते हते तस्मिन्स राजा क्रोधमूर्छितः प्रेषयामास युद्धाय मार्गे च प्रतिपद्दिने
When Bhagadatta was slain, that king, overcome with wrath, sent forth forces for battle on the very next day.
अंगदश्च कलिंगश्च त्रिकोणः श्रीपतिस्तथा
Aṅgada, Kaliṅga, Trikoṇa, and also Śrīpati,
सुकेतुर्नव भूपास्ते नवायुतबलैर्युताः
Suketū and nine other kings, each accompanied by forces of nine thousand,
दृष्ट्वा ताँल्लक्षणो वीरो राजभिश्च स्वकीयकैः
Seeing them, the heroic Lakṣaṇa, along with his own kings,
रुद्रवर्मा च नृपतिः शूरैर्दशसहस्रकैः 3.3.32.
And King Rudravarmā, with ten thousand brave warriors,
कालीवर्माऽयुतैस्सार्धं कलिंगं प्रत्यबुध्यत
Kālīvarmā, together with tens of thousands, confronted Kaliṅga.
ततोनुजः प्रवीरश्च श्रीपतिं सोऽयुतैस्सह श्रीतारं नृपमासाद्य महद्युद्धमचीकरत्
Then his valiant younger brother, along with tens of thousands, engaged Śrīpati and, reaching King Śrītāra, waged a great battle.
वामनोयुतसंयुक्तो मुकुंदं प्रति सोऽगमत्
Vāmana, accompanied by tens of thousands, advanced against Mukuṇḍa.
