बाणैश्च बाणान्भुवि तौ च छित्त्वा बभूवस्तुस्तौ विरथौ नृपाग्र्यौ
With arrows, they cut down arrows on the earth; those two foremost kings became chariotless.
स कामसेनः स्वरिपोश्च पुत्राञ्जघान बाणैश्च तदाष्टसंख्यान्
Then Kamasena slew the enemy's sons with arrows, numbering eight.
रिपोः शिरो जह्रतुरुग्रवेगी स कामसेनश्च कबंध एव
With fierce speed, they took the enemy's head; thus Kamasena became headless.
हतेषु सर्वेषु तदा त्रयस्ते चामुंडकाद्या जगनायकं ते
When all had been slain, then those three, beginning with Camunda, became the leaders of the world.
स दिव्यवाजी च तदा स्वपक्षौ प्रसार्य्य खेनाशु रिपुं जगाम
Then, that divine horse swiftly spread its wings and went through the sky to the enemy.
रथं च भूमौ भगदत्तकस्य विचूर्ण्य शीघ्रं च नभो जगाम
Having shattered the chariot of Bhagadatta on the ground, he quickly went into the sky.
निशामुषित्वा जगनायकाद्याः प्रातः समुत्थाय रणं प्रजग्मुः 3.3.32.
Having spent the night, those leaders of the world rose in the morning and went to battle.
उवाच राजञ्छृणु किन्नराणां महाबलास्ते रिपवो ममैते
He said, 'O king, hear: these are my enemies, the mighty Kinnaras.'
इत्युक्तवान्मंकणभूपतिस्तु ययौ सपुत्रोऽयुतसैन्यपश्च
Having spoken thus, the king Mankan went forth with his son and his countless army.
मनोरथस्थो जगनायकश्च स तालनो वै वडवां विगृह्य
The world-leader, standing upon his chariot, seized the palm tree and the mare.
पपीहकस्थश्च स रूपणो वै जगाम कृष्णांशसमन्वितश्च
And Rupan, standing upon the peacock, went forth, accompanied by Krishna's rays.
समंततः किन्नरसैन्यघोरं विनाशयामासुरुपांशुखड्गैः
On all sides, they destroyed the terrible Kinnara army with shining swords.
ध्यात्वा कुबेरं च गृहीतचापो नभोगतस्तत्र बभूव सूक्ष्मः
Having meditated upon Kubera and taken up his bow, he became subtle and ascended into the sky.
अदृश्यमानः स्वशरैः कठोरैर्विनर्द्य सर्वान्हि ननर्द घोरम्
Invisible, he roared fiercely and struck all with his harsh arrows.
ध्यात्वा महेंद्रं कणकं च बद्ध्वा कृष्णांशमागम्य पदौ ननाम
Meditating upon Mahendra and binding a golden band, he approached Krishna's portion and bowed at his feet.
विनर्घ घोरं रुरुधुश्च सर्वान्माया विनो गुह्यकमस्त्रमूहुः
They wailed terribly and restrained all with illusion; the Guhyakas invoked their secret weapon.
श्रमान्विताः सप्त महाप्रवीरा हतेषु सर्वेषु सुषुपुश्च वै यदा 3.3.32.
Exhausted, the seven mighty heroes, when all had been slain, fell asleep.
सुप्तान्समुत्थाय च सप्त शूरान्निशीथकाले स चकार युद्धम्
Rising at midnight, he engaged those seven warriors in battle.
गृहीतखड्गौ रणघोरमत्तौ हत्वा ततो वै भुवि चेयतुश्च
Seizing their swords, maddened by the fierce battle, they slew and then fell to the ground.
ततः प्रभाते विमले विजाते रुरोद रामांश उताललाप
Then, at dawn, when the sky was clear, Rāmāṃśa wept and lamented.
स पंचशब्दं गजमारुरोह त्रिलक्षसैन्यैस्तरसा जगाम
He mounted the five-sounded elephant and swiftly departed with his army of three hundred thousand.
स्वपंचलक्षैः प्रबलैश्च शूरैः सार्द्धं रुरोधाशु रिपोश्च सेनाम्
With his own five hundred thousand strong and valiant warriors, he quickly surrounded the enemy's army.
त्रियाम मात्रेण हताश्च सर्वे द्वयोश्च पक्षा बलशालिनश्च
Within the span of three watches, all the powerful warriors of both sides were slain.
स धुंधुकारश्च तदाजगाम रथ स्थितं लक्षणमुग्रवीरम्
Then Dhuṃdhukāra arrived, a fierce hero marked by auspicious signs, standing upon his chariot.
स पंचशब्दं गजमास्थितो वै गतः स एवाशु जगाम भूपम्
He, mounted on the five-sounded elephant, quickly went to the king.
गजं प्रमत्तं शिवदत्तमुग्रमाह्लादहन्तारमुवाच वाक्यम्
He addressed the maddened, formidable, and joyful elephant named Śivadatta, the destroyer of delight.
स मंडलीको रणदुर्मदश्च रामांश आह्लाद इति प्रसिद्धः 3.3.32.
That elephant, famed as Maṇḍalīka, fierce in battle, is known as Rāmāṃśa Āhlāda.
इत्येवमुक्तो नृपतिं स हस्ती वचस्तमाहाशु शृणुष्व राजन्
Thus addressed, the elephant spoke swiftly to the king: 'Listen, O King!'
इत्युक्तवंतं च गजं प्रमत्तं स पंचशब्दश्च तदा स्वदंतैः
As he spoke, the maddened elephant, with his own tusks, attacked Paṃcaśabda.
स रुद्रदत्तश्च गजः प्रमत्तो रुषान्वधावत्तरसा गजेंद्रम्
That furious elephant named Rudradatta swiftly charged at the lord of elephants.
