एको रथो गजास्तत्र ज्ञेयाः पञ्चशतं रणे एते सैन्या नरा ज्ञेया सैन्यपांश्च शृणुष्व भोः ।।3.3.32.
There was one chariot and five hundred elephants in that battle; these men are to be known as the army, and listen to the commanders, O sir.
दशानां पच्चराणां च पतिर्नाम्ना स पत्तिपः
The leader of ten infantry units is called the commander of foot soldiers by name.
पंचानां च गजानां च पतिर्नाम्ना गजाधिपः
The leader of five elephants is known by name as the lord of elephants.
उष्ट्रारूढाः स्मृता दूताश्चत्वारिंशच्च तद्बले षड्त्रिंशद्वै पदचरास्तेषां कर्माणि मे शृणु
Messengers mounted on camels are remembered as forty in that force; thirty-six are foot soldiers—hear from me their duties.
दश गोलकदातारो दशतत्पुष्टिकारकाः त्रयो दृष्टिकरा ज्ञेयास्त्रियामेषु पृथक्पृथक्
Ten are givers of balls, ten are those who provide nourishment; three are to be known as watchers, each in three watches separately.
शेषाः शूद्रास्तु सेनानां शूरकृत्यपरायणाः
The rest are Shudras among the troops, devoted to the tasks of warriors.
तत्रासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं धर्मेण च समन्ततः
There was a fierce battle fought everywhere according to righteousness.
तत्पश्चाद्याममात्रेण सैन्यपा युद्धमागताः
Afterwards, within the span of a watch, the commanders engaged in battle.
याममात्रं च युद्धाय संस्थिता रणमूर्धनि
For the duration of a watch, they stood ready for battle at the forefront of the conflict.
भगदत्तेन वै देवः कृतवान्युद्धमुत्तमम्
Bhagadatta, indeed, performed an excellent battle.
कृष्णांशस्तत्र चामुण्डं जित्वा तु लहरात्मजान् दध्मौ शंखं प्रसन्नात्मा लक्षणान्तमुपाययौ ।।3.3.32.
Krishna, having defeated Chamunda and the sons of Lahara, blew his conch, his mind serene, and attained the mark of victory.
चामुंडो धुंधुकारश्च भगदत्तो युतः शतैः
Chamunda, Dhundhukara, and Bhagadatta, together with hundreds (of warriors)...
इंदुलो देवसिंहश्च सहस्रैः संयुतौ मुदा
Indulo and Devasingha, accompanied by thousands, rejoiced.
प्रातःकाले तु संप्राप्ते तृतीयायां भयंकरे
When morning arrived, in the third terrifying watch...
वचनं प्राह भो राजँस्त्वं त्रिवीरैः सुरक्षितः
He spoke these words: 'O king, you are protected by three heroes.'
तदा परिमलो भूपो नेत्रसिंहं महीपतिम्
Then Parimala, the king, (addressed) Netra Simha, the lord of the earth.
तयोश्चासीन्महयुद्धं सेनयोरुभयोः क्रमात् पच्चराः पच्चरैः सार्द्धं शतघ्न्यश्च शतघ्निभिः
A great battle took place between the two armies in succession, with chariots facing chariots and machines of destruction against machines of destruction.
अपराह्ने मुनिश्रेष्ठ नेत्रसिंहो महाबलः
In the afternoon, O best of sages, Netrasiṃha, mighty in strength,
परस्परं च विरथौ संछिन्नधनुषौ तदा अन्योन्येन वधं कृत्वा स्वर्गलोकमुपागतौ
Then, both warriors, dismounted and with their bows broken, killed each other and ascended to the heavenly realms.
इन्दुलस्तं तु चामुंडं देवो वै धुंधुकं तथा
Indula struck Cāmuṇḍa, and the god struck Dhuṃdhuka as well.
शेषैः पंचशतैः शूरैस्तैः सार्द्धं लक्षणं प्रति 3.3.32.
With the remaining five hundred heroes, they advanced toward Lakṣaṇa.
प्रातःकाले तु संप्राप्ते महीराजो महाबलः
When morning arrived, the mighty king of the earth,
भवान्दशसुतैर्वीरैर्लक्षसैन्यैश्च संयुतः इति श्रुत्वा स नृपतिर्वाद्यान्संवाद्य चाययौ
Bhavān, accompanied by ten heroic sons and an army of a hundred thousand, upon hearing this, the king came after assembling his musicians.
दृष्ट्वा परिमलो भूपो मायावर्माणमागतम्
Seeing Parimala, the king, arrive with magical armor,
भवान्दशसहस्रैश्च सार्द्धं तैस्त्रिभिरन्वितः
Bhavān, together with ten thousand, accompanied by those three,
इति श्रुत्वा ययौ शीघ्रं सेनयोरुभयोर्महत्
Upon hearing this, he quickly went to the great battle between the two armies.
हतास्ते दशसाहस्रा कृष्णांशाद्यैः सुरक्षिताः
Those ten thousand were slain, protected by the Kṛṣṇāṃśā and others.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे धीराः कृष्णांशाद्यास्तुरीयकाः
Meanwhile, the steadfast Kṛṣṇāṃśā and others, the third group,
ततोंगभूपस्त्रिभिरेव बाणैरताडयन्मूर्ध्नि च पार्श्वयोर्वै ।। 3.3.32.
Then the king of Aṅga struck with three arrows, hitting both the head and the sides.
हयं समुड्डीय सु पुष्करान्तं ततोभ्यगात्तं नृपतिं रथस्थम्
Mounting his horse, he entered the beautiful lotus pond, then approached the king who was standing on his chariot.
