षष्टिवर्षं कृतं राज्यं बिंदुसारस्ततोऽभवत्
He ruled for sixty years; afterwards, Bindusāra was born.

अवन्ते प्रमरो भूपश्चतुर्योजनविस्तृताम्
In Avanti, King Pramara ruled over a region spanning four yojanas.
कलिंजरपुरं रम्यमक्रोशायतनं स्मृतम्
The delightful city of Kaliṃjara is remembered as the place of lamentation.
अध्यास्य बौद्धहंता स सुखितोभवदूर्जितः
Having occupied it, the destroyer of Buddhists became happy and powerful.
अजमेरपुरं रम्यं विधिशोभासमन्वितम्
The delightful city of Ajamerapura, endowed with the splendor of order.
शुक्लो नाम महीपालो गत आनर्तऽमंडले
A king named Shukla went to the region of Anarta.
तेषामग्न्युद्भवानां च ये भूपा राज्यसत्कृताः
Among those born from fire, the kings who were honored with sovereignty.
गच्छध्वं ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे योगनिद्रावशो ह्यहम्
All you Brahmins, go forth; I am now under the power of yogic sleep.
पूर्णे द्वे च सहस्रान्ते सूतो वचनमब्रवीत्
When two thousand years were completed, the Suta spoke these words.
प्रमरो नाम भूपालः कृतं राज्यं च षट्समाः
A king named Pramara ruled the kingdom for six years.
देवापिस्तनयस्तस्य पितु स्तुल्यं कृतं पदम्
His son, born of Devapi, attained a position equal to his father.
तस्माद्गंधर्वसेनश्च पंचाशदब्दभूपदम् 3.1.7.
From him, Gandharvasena became king for fifty years.
शंखेन तत्पदं प्राप्तं राज्यं त्रिंशत्समाः कृतम्
Shankha attained that position and ruled the kingdom for thirty years.
गंधर्वसेनं संप्राप्य पुत्ररत्नमजीजनत्
Having obtained Gandharvasena, he begot a precious son.
पेतुर्दुंदुभयो नेदुर्वांति वाताः सुखप्रदाः
The drums resounded, the conches blared, and gentle winds blew, bringing delight.
विंशद्भिः कर्मयोगं च समाराध्य शिवोऽभवत्
By performing karma-yoga with twenty acts, he became favored by Shiva.
शकानां च विनाशार्थमार्यधर्मविवृद्धये
For the destruction of the Shakas and the increase of noble dharma.
विक्रमादित्यनामानं पिता कृत्वा मुमोद ह
Having made him, named Vikramaditya, his father rejoiced.
पञ्चवर्षे वयःप्राप्ते तपसोऽर्थे वनं गतः
When he reached the age of five years, he went to the forest for the sake of austerity.
पश्चादम्बावतीं दिव्यां पुरीं यातः श्रियान्वितः
Afterwards, he went to the divine city of Ambavati, endowed with prosperity.
शिवेन प्रेषितं तस्मै सोपि तत्पदमग्रहीत्
Sent by Shiva to him, he too accepted that position.
एकदा स नृपो वीरो महाकालेशश्वरस्थलम् 3.1.7.
Once, that heroic king went to the sacred place of Mahakaleshvara.
सभा धर्ममयी तत्र निर्मिता व्यूहविस्तरा
There, a hall was constructed, filled with righteousness and arranged in an expansive layout.
नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णा पुष्पवल्लीभिरन्विता
It was adorned with various trees and creepers, and enriched with flowering vines.
आहूय ब्राह्मणान्मुख्यान्वेदवेदांगपारगान्
The foremost Brahmins, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches, were summoned.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र वैतालो नाम देवता
Meanwhile, in that place, a deity named Vetala appeared.
