का त्वं कस्य सुता रम्या संग्रामे मामुपस्थिता
Who are you, whose daughter are you, O beautiful one, who has approached me in battle?
इति श्रुत्वा तदा वेला जलं दत्त्वा शुचान्विता
Hearing this, Velā, pure-hearted, offered water.
वेला नाम महीभर्तुः सुताहं त्वामुपस्थिता जीवनं कुरु राजेंद्र भुंक्ष्व भोगान्मया सह
I am Velā, daughter of the lord of the earth; I have come to you. O king, live and enjoy pleasures with me.
इत्युक्तः स तु तामाह कलिकाले समागते
Thus addressed, he replied to her, 'When the age of Kali arrives...'
हरिनागरमारुह्य मया सार्द्धं शुभानने
Mounting the city of Hari, together with me, O auspicious-faced one...
इत्पुक्त्वा तौ समारुह्य पूर्वे च कपिलान्तिकम् 3.3.31.
Having spoken thus, the two mounted and proceeded toward the region of Kapila.
पृथक्पृथक्सुतार्थानि स्नात्वा दत्त्वा च .जग्मतुः
For the sake of their offspring, separately, they bathed and gave offerings, then departed.
उत्तरे बदरीस्थाने स्नात्वा तीर्थानि जग्मतुः
In the northern Badarī region, they bathed and went to the holy places.
वेलामुवाच वचनं भाद्रशुक्लाष्टमीदिने
Velā spoke words on the eighth day of the bright fortnight of Bhādra.
इति श्रुत्वा तु सा प्राह स्वामिन्मद्वचनं कुरु
Hearing this, she said, 'Master, do as I say.'
स्थित्वा तत्र समस्वान्तो भज त्वं सर्वमंगलाम्
Remain there with a tranquil mind; worship all that is auspicious.
तारकं च तथा हत्वा त्वत्समीपं व्रजाम्यहम्
Having slain Tāraka, I will come to your side.
वेला नाम शुभा नारी हरिनागरसंस्थिता
Velā, a virtuous woman, dwelled in the city of Hari.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे प्राप्ताः कृष्णांशाद्या महाबलाः
Meanwhile, the mighty ones born from the portion of Krishna arrived.
महीपतिं प्रियं मत्वा कृष्णांशं नृप दुष्प्रियम्
Considering the king as dear, but Krishna's portion as unfavorable, O king.
महीराजसुतैर्धूर्तैस्तारकाद्यैर्महाबलैः
With the deceitful sons of the king, and with Tāraka and other mighty ones.
स्वामिनं प्रति चागम्य ते जग्मुश्छद्मना प्रियम् तस्माद्यूयं मया सार्द्धं गंतुमर्हथ तं प्रति
Having come before their master, they deceitfully spoke words pleasing to him; therefore, you ought to go with me to him.
इति घोरतमं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सर्वे शुचान्विताः
Hearing this most dreadful statement, all were filled with grief.
इत्युक्त्वोच्चैश्च रुरुदुः कृष्णांशाद्या महाबलाः
Having spoken thus, the mighty ones descended from Krishna's line wept aloud.
क्रोधयुक्ता तदा वेला लिखित्वा पत्रमुल्बणम्
Then, filled with anger at that moment, they wrote a harsh letter.
तत्पत्रं च महीराजो वाचयित्वा विधानतः
The king of the earth, having the letter read out according to rule,
चिन्ताकलेवरं प्राप्य सुखनिद्रां व्यनाशयत् 3.3.32.
Fell into anxious thoughts and lost his peaceful sleep.
चतुर्विंशतिलक्षैश्च शूरैर्भूपसमन्वितैः
With twenty-four lakhs of brave warriors accompanied by kings,
तथा परिमलो भूपो लक्षषोडशसैन्यपः
Likewise, King Parimala, with an army of sixteen lakhs,
स्यमन्तपंचके तीर्थे शिबिराणि चकार ह
Set up camps at the holy place of Syamantapanchaka.
गंगाकूले च ते सर्वे कौरवांशा महाबलाः
All those mighty Kauravas gathered on the bank of the Ganga.
कृत्वा ते कार्तिकीस्नानं दत्त्वा दानान्यनेकशः
Having performed the Kartika bath and given many gifts,
विष्वक्सेनीयभूपालो लहरस्तत्र चागतः पूर्वजन्मनि यन्नाम तन्नाम्ना प्रश्रिता इह
There arrived King Lahar, lord of the Vishvaksenas, who was honored here by the same name as in his previous birth.
दुस्सहो दुश्शलश्चैव जलसंधः समः सहः
Dussaha, Dusshala, Jalasanha, Samaha, and Saha,
दुर्मर्षणश्च दुष्कर्णः सोमकीर्तिरनूदरः
