स भूपो भूमिराजं च समाहूय वचोऽब्रवीत्
That king, having summoned the lord of the land, spoke these words.
गंधर्वस्सुकलो नाम मत्कन्यां च शुभाननाम्
There was a Gandharva named Sukala, and my daughter was named Śubhānana.
पूर्णिमायां च संप्राप्तः स वै चित्ररथप्रियः वधं कुरु नृपश्रेष्ठ देहलीं गंतुमर्हसि
On the full moon, he arrived, being fond of Citraratha; O best of kings, kill him, you ought to proceed to the threshold.
इति श्रुत्वा महीराजो लक्षसैन्यसमन्वितः
Hearing this, the lord of the land, accompanied by a hundred thousand soldiers,
वैशाख्यां सुखजातायां सुकलोनाम वीर्यवान्
In the month of Vaiśākha, in the pleasant birth, Sukala, named for his valor,
नगराच्च बहिर्जाता ये शूरा मदविह्वलाः
Those who were born outside the city, heroes intoxicated with pride,
भयभीतो महीराजो ध्यात्वा सर्वमयीं शिवाम्
The lord of the land, frightened, meditated upon Śivā, the all-pervading.
कृष्णांशादीन्बोधयित्वा तैश्च सार्धं समागमत् 3.3.31.
Having awakened those of the Kṛṣṇa lineage, he joined together with them.
बलखानिश्च बलवाञ्छतगंधर्वमुत्तमम्
He, powerful, attacked the foremost Gandharva with his troops.
बहुधा ते हि गंधर्वास्तैश्च सार्द्धं समारुधन्
Those Gandharvas, being many, fought together with them.
भयभीतास्तदा सर्वे रामांशं शरणं ययुः
All, being frightened at that time, sought refuge in Rāma's lineage.
दिवासूक्तेन तुष्टाव तदा प्रादुरभूच्छिवा
He praised her with the hymn of the day, and then Śivā appeared.
पराजिते च गंधर्वे कृष्णांशो जनमोहनः
When the Gandharva was defeated, Kṛṣṇa's lineage, enchanting the people,
षोडशाब्दे च कृष्णांशे संप्राप्ते देविपूजके
When the sixteenth year of Kṛṣṇa's lineage arrived, devoted to the worship of the goddess,
पत्नी नागवती तस्य तक्षकस्य सुता शुभा
His wife was Nāgavatī, the beautiful daughter of Takṣaka.
दशैव तनयाश्चासन्कन्या तस्य शुभानना
He had ten daughters, and his beautiful-faced daughter was named Śubhānana.
पुरोहितं समाहूय महीराजाय प्रैषयत् 3.3.31.
He summoned the priest and sent him to the king of the earth.
महीराजस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा त्रिलक्षबलसंयुतः
Hearing this, the king of the earth, endowed with three hundred thousand troops,
सुवेला पितरं प्राह देहि मे नागभूषणम्
At the proper time, he said to his father, 'Give me the serpent ornament.'
इति श्रुत्वा नागवर्मा महीराजान्तमाययौ
Hearing this, Nagavarma came to the king of the earth.
इत्युक्तः स महीराजो विस्मितोभूत्सुदुःखितः
Thus addressed, the king of the earth became astonished and deeply distressed.
इति ज्ञात्वा तदाऽऽह्लादः शूरपंचशतावृतः
Knowing this, then Ahlada, surrounded by fifty valiant men,
शतयोजनगामिन्यो वाजिन्यश्च द्वियामके सहस्रयोजनं वीर्यं तासां चैव दिने निशि
The mares, each capable of traveling a hundred yojanas, in pairs, possessed the strength to go a thousand yojanas in a single day and night.
कलांशादुद्भवा अश्वा वाजिना च हरेः स्वयम्
The horses, born from portions of the moon, and the steeds of Hari himself,
गायत्रो योभवद्वाजी कालचक्रप्रवर्तकः हरिणी नाम तच्छक्तिः कलांशाद्भूमिमागता
The steed named Gayatra, who set the wheel of time in motion, and the power called Harini, descended to earth from a portion of the moon.
आह्लादश्च करालस्थो बिंदुलस्थो हरेः कला
Ahlada, stationed in Karala, and Bindulastha, a portion of Hari,
गत्वा ते तु महीराजं नत्वा तुंगासनां ययुः 3.3.31.
They went to the king of the earth, bowed, and ascended the lofty seat.
मम पुत्राश्च युष्माभिस्त्रयः शूरा विवाहिताः
Three of my sons, valiant men, have been married by you.
इति श्रुत्वा स आह्लादो गत्वा भूतलमुत्तमम्
Hearing this, Ahlada went to the excellent surface of the earth.
सुप्तो हि तव भर्ता च पुंडरीकः शुभाननः
Your husband, Pundarika of auspicious face, is asleep.
