महीराजस्तु बलवाँल्लक्षषोडशसैन्यपः
The king of the earth was powerful, possessing an army of one hundred and sixty thousand.
कृष्णांशे पंचदशके संप्राप्ते व्रततत्परे
When the fifteenth day of the dark fortnight arrived, those devoted to vows assembled.
मायावर्मा च तं दृष्ट्वा तारकं भूपसंयुतम्
Maya Varman, seeing Taraka accompanied by kings,
कितवो नाम मेधावी दैत्यवंशयशस्करः
Kitava, intelligent and renowned in the Daitya lineage,
हता भूपकुमाराश्च मत्सुतार्थं समागताः
The princes, gathered for my son's sake, were slain.
तेषां च बहुधा द्रव्यं लुंठयित्वा मदातुरः
Having plundered their wealth in many ways, he, intoxicated, departed.
इति श्रुत्वा महीराजस्सर्वसैन्यसमन्वितः
Hearing this, the king of the earth, accompanied by his entire army,
कितवस्स तु मायावी जित्वा सर्वान्महाबलान्
But Kitava, the magician, having defeated all the mighty ones,
तारकश्च तदा दुःखी ध्यात्वा शंकरमुत्तमम् 3.3.31.
Then Taraka, distressed, meditated on the supreme Shankara.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे प्राप्ता महावतीनिवासिनः
Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Mahavati arrived.
महीराजस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा बलखानिं महाबलम्
The king of the earth, seeing those armies and their great strength,
तारकः कितवेनैव संहृतो दितिजेन वै
Tāraka was indeed destroyed by the Dānava through deceit.
इति श्रुत्वा तु ते धीराः कृष्णांशो देवसिंहकः
Hearing this, those steadfast ones—Kṛṣṇāṃśa and the lion among the gods—
अहोरात्रमभूद्युद्धं तेषां तेन समन्वितम् बलखानिं मोहयित्वा जगर्ज च पुनःपुनः
There was battle day and night among them, joined with him; having bewildered the army, he roared again and again.
सुखखानिस्तदा शूरः कितवं बलवत्तरम्
Then Sukhakhāni, that valiant one, overcame the powerful gambler.
त्रयस्ते सुखिनो भूत्वा सुखखानिं प्रशस्य च
The three of them, having become happy, praised Sukhakhāni.
तदा भूपसुता देवी सुखखानिं समावृणोत्
Then the queen, daughter of the king, chose Sukhakhāni.
संबोध्य विविधैर्वाक्यैर्भूमिराजांतमागमत्
Addressing him with various words, she brought the king of the earth there.
कोटिस्वर्णं नृपात्प्राप्य बलखानिर्महाबलः 3.3.31.
Having received ten million gold coins from the king, Balakhāni, of great strength—
प्रभावती तस्य सुता दशपुत्रानुजाभवत्
Prabhāvatī, his daughter, became the younger sister of ten sons.
बलश्च प्रबलश्चैव सुबलो बलवान्बली
Bala, Prabala, Subala, Balavān, and Balī—
करभो नाम वै यक्षो लल्लराजस्य सेवकः पञ्चवर्षांतरे जाते तेन भुक्ता कुमारिका
A yakṣa named Karabha, servant of King Lallara, after five years, enjoyed the maiden.
मूलवर्मा महीराजं समाहूय ससैन्यकम्
Mūlavarmā summoned the king of the earth together with his army.
प्रभावतीं शुभां कन्यां नृहराय ददाम्यहम् ददौ वेदविधानेन सुतां च नृहराय वै
I give Prabhāvatī, the auspicious maiden, to Nṛhara; he gave his daughter to Nṛhara according to Vedic rites.
पक्षमात्रांतरे यक्षः करभस्तत्र चागतः
Within the span of a fortnight, the yakṣa Karabha arrived there.
महीराजस्तदा दुःखी वत्सजौ बलवत्तरौ
Then the king of the earth was sorrowful—his two sons, Vatsaja, were very powerful.
इति श्रुत्वा स कृष्णांशः करभं यक्षकिंकरम्
Hearing this, Kṛṣṇāṃśa approached Karabha, the yakṣa-servant.
भ्रातरौ तौ समागम्य नागपाशं तु चासिना भूमिराजः प्रसन्नात्मा देहलीं मुदितोऽगमत्।। 3.3.31.
The two brothers, having come together, with a sword cut the nāga-bond; the king of the earth, his mind pleased, joyfully entered the threshold.
सूत उवाच काश्मीरे च नृपश्चासीत्कैकयो नाम विश्रुतः
Sūta said: In Kashmir, there was a king renowned by the name Kaikaya.
कामः प्रकामः सकामो निष्कामो निरपत्रपः
He was desirous, exceedingly passionate, with desires, without desires, and shameless.
