संख्यादशसहस्रं च नरवृन्दं द्विजन्मनाम्
A multitude of ten thousand twice-born men,
तैः सार्द्धमार्यदेशे स सरस्वत्याः प्रसादतः
Along with them, in the land of the noble ones, by the grace of Sarasvatī, he (remained).
तेषामार्यसमूहानां देव्याश्च वरदानतः
Among those noble groups, and by the boon granted by the goddess,
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च तद्भूपः काश्यपो मुनिः
Their sons and grandsons, and that sage Kāśyapa, the king,
राज्यपुत्राख्यदेशे च शूद्राश्चाष्टसहस्रकाः
In the region called Rājyaputra, there were also eight thousand Śūdras.
मागधं नाम तत्पुत्रमभिषिच्य ययौ मुनिः
Having anointed his son named Māgadha, the sage departed.
सूतं पौराणिकं नत्वा विष्णुध्यानपरोऽभवत्
Having bowed to Sūta, the narrator of the Purāṇas, he became devoted to meditation on Viṣṇu.
नित्यनैमित्तिकं कृत्वा पप्रच्छुरिदमादरात् कलौ राज्यं कृतं यैस्तु व्यासशिष्य वदस्व नः ।।3.1.6.
Having performed the regular and occasional rites, he respectfully asked this: 'O disciple of Vyāsa, tell us by whom the kingdom was established in the Kali age.'
मागधो मागधे देशे प्राप्तवान्काश्यपात्मजः
Māgadha, the son of Kāśyapa, attained the land of Māgadha.
पितृराज्यं स्मृतं तेन त्वार्यदेशः पृथक्कृतः
By him, the ancestral kingdom was remembered, and the noble land was made distinct.
वायव्यां कैकयो देशो मद्रदेशस्तथोत्तरे
In the northwest is the land of Kaikaya, and in the north, the land of Madra.
देशनाम्ना तस्य सुता मगधस्य महात्मनः
By the name of the region, the sons of that great-souled Māgadha are known.
बलभद्रस्तदा तुष्टो यज्ञभावेन भावितः
At that time, Balabhadra, satisfied and inspired by the spirit of sacrifice,
शतवर्षं कृतं राज्यं काकवर्मा सुतोऽभवत्
The kingdom lasted a hundred years; his son was Kākavarmā.
अशीतिवर्षं राज्यं तत्क्षेत्रौजास्तत्सुतोऽभवत्
The kingdom lasted eighty years; his son was Kṣetrauja.
दशहीनं कृतं राज्यं ततोऽजातरिपुस्सुतः
The kingdom lasted ninety years; then his son was Ajātaripu.
दशहीनं कृतं राज्यमुदयाश्वस्ततोऽभवत् 3.1.6.
The kingdom lasted ninety years; after him, Udayāśva became king.
दशहीनं कृतं राज्यं तस्मान्नंदसुतोऽभवत्
The kingdom lasted ninety years; from him, the son of Nanda was born.
नन्दाज्जातः प्रनन्दश्च दशवर्षं कृतं पदम्
From Nanda was born Prananda, who held the throne for ten years.
तस्माज्जातस्समानंदो विंशद्वर्षं कृतं पदम्
From him was born Samānanda, who held the throne for twenty years.
देवानंदस्तस्य सुतः पितुस्तुल्यं कृतं पदम्
Devānanda, his son, attained a position equal to his father.
मौर्यानंदस्तस्य सुतः पितुस्तुल्यं कृतं पदम्
Mauryānanda, his son, attained a position equal to his father.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु कलिना संस्मृतो हरिः
At that very time, Hari was remembered by Kali.
बौद्धधर्मं च संस्कत्य पट्टणे प्राप्तवान्हरिः
Hari, having refined the Buddhist doctrine, arrived in the city.
विंशद्वर्षं कृतं राज्यं तस्माच्छुद्धोदनोऽभवत्
He ruled for twenty years; from him, Śuddhodana was born.
शताद्रौ द्विसहस्रेऽब्दे व्यतीते सोऽभवन्नृपः
After two thousand years had passed from the century, he became king.
षष्टिवर्षं कृतं राज्यं सर्वबौद्धा नराः स्मृताः 3.1.6.
He ruled for sixty years; all men were remembered as Buddhists.
विष्णोर्वीर्यानुसारेण जगद्धर्मः प्रवर्त्तते
According to the power of Viṣṇu, the universal dharma is established.
अपि पापसमाचारा मोक्षवंतः प्रकीर्तिताः
Even those of sinful conduct are described as possessing liberation.
चंद्रगुप्तस्तस्य सुतः पौरसा धिपतेः सुताम्
Chandragupta, his son, married the daughter of the city lord.
