पातेन तस्य सिंहस्य स वीरो मरणं गतः स्वभल्लेन च तं सिंहं हत्वा तत्र जगर्ज वै
By the fall of that lion, the hero met his death; striking that lion with his own mace, he roared there.
तदा तु बौद्धसिंहेन शार्दूलस्तत्र चोदितः
Then, at the urging of the Buddhist lion, a tiger was set forth there.
मातुलौ मृत्युवशगौ दृष्ट्वा स्वर्णवतीसुतः
Seeing his two maternal uncles overcome by death, the son of Svarṇavatī,
शरमादाय वै शीघ्रं नाम्ना संमोहनं शुभम्
Quickly took up an arrow named Saṃmohana, auspicious and enchanting,
बद्ध्वा तान्बौद्धसिंहादीन्नृपान्दशसहस्रकम्
He bound those Buddhist lions and ten thousand kings.
तदा ते हर्षितास्सर्वे प्रपेष्य नगरं ययुः लुण्ठयित्वा बलात्सर्वे नृपदुर्गमुपाययुः
Then all of them, delighted, sent word and went to the city; having plundered by force, they reached the king’s fortress.
बौद्धसिंहस्तदागत्य जयन्तेन विमोचितः 3.3.29.
At that time, the Buddhist lion, having arrived, was released by Jayanta.
दशकोटीः सुवर्णस्य चाह्लादाय तदा धनम्
Ten crores of gold and wealth were then given for joy.
आर्यदेशं न यास्यामः कदाचिद्राष्ट्रहेतवे त्रिलक्षैश्च युतास्ते वै नेत्रपालगृहं गताः
We shall never go to the land of the Aryas for the sake of the kingdom; those three hundred thousand, joined together, have gone to the house of the guardians of the realm.
सुप्रिया योगसिंहाद्यास्तन्नो वद विचक्षण
Supriya, Yogasimha, and others—tell us about them, O wise one.
तदा तु दुःखितो देवो महेंद्रान्तमुपाययौ
Then, the god, afflicted with sorrow, approached Mahendra at the end.
देवराज नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वदेवप्रियंकर अतो वै लोकमर्यादा विरुद्धा दृश्यते भुवि
O king of the gods, salutations to you, doer of what pleases all the gods; now, indeed, the order of the world appears to be violated on earth.
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं महेन्द्रो देवमायया जयंतस्य स्वपुत्रस्य मुमोद स सुरैः सह
Hearing these words, Mahendra, by divine power, rejoiced together with the gods at the victory of his own son Jayanta.
इन्दुलश्च तदा दुःखी शारदां सर्वमंगलाम्
At that time, Indula was distressed, and Śāradā, the bringer of all auspiciousness.
इति ते कथितं विप्र पुनः शृणु कथां शुभाम् दशकोटिमितं स्वर्णं तेभ्यो दत्त्वा समं समम्
Thus it has been told to you, O Brahmin; now hear again the auspicious tale: after giving them gold measured as ten crores, equally and equally.
प्रस्थानं कारयामास चाष्टानां बलशालिनाम्
He arranged the departure of the eight mighty warriors.
कामपालेन भो विप्र लक्षणो नकुलांशकः
By Kāmāpāla, O Brahmin, Lakṣaṇa and Nakulāṃśaka.
जयचंद्र महाभाग सावधानं वचः शृणु
Jayachandra, greatly fortunate one, listen attentively to my words.
अतो वै लक्षणो वीरश्चैकाकी मां समाप्नुयात्
Therefore, Lakṣaṇa, the heroic one, may reach me alone.
सेनान्वितं च तं ज्ञात्वा महीराजो महाबलः
Knowing him to be accompanied by an army, the mighty king of the earth.
इति तत्रत्यवचनं मत्वा राजा प्रसन्नधीः
Thus, considering the words spoken there, the king, with a clear mind.
आहूय प्रेषयामास कामपालाय धीमते
He summoned and sent the wise Kāmāpāla.
तदा पद्माकरः श्यालो ज्ञात्वा लक्षणमागतम्
Then Padmākara, the brother-in-law, knowing that Lakṣaṇa had arrived.
लक्षणो नकुलांशश्च दृष्ट्वा शत्रुमुपस्थितम्
Lakṣaṇa and Nakulāṃśa, seeing the enemy present.
मूर्च्छयित्वा महीराजं हत्वा पंचशतं बली
Having caused the king of the earth to faint, and having slain five hundred strong men.
उत्थितश्च महीराजो गत्वा पद्माकरं प्रति 3.3.30.
The king of the earth arose and went towards Padmākara.
लक्षणो मे महाञ्छत्रुस्स च त्वद्गेहमागतः
A great royal umbrella, a mark of distinction, has come to your house.
इति श्रुत्वा स लोभात्मा दत्त्वा हालाहलं विषम् हत्वा ताञ्छतशूरांश्च गुप्तवार्तामकारयन्
Hearing this, that greedy man gave them deadly poison, killed those hundred heroes, and concealed the matter.
ज्ञात्वा तत्पद्मिनी नारी दुःखितालप्य वै भृशम्
Knowing this, the lotus-faced woman became deeply distressed and lamented greatly.
तदा प्रसन्ना सा देवी वरदा सर्वमंगला
Then that goddess, pleased, the bestower of boons and all-auspicious, appeared.
