न वदेद्यावनीं भाषां प्राणैः कंठगतैरपि
He should not speak the Yavana language, even if his breath is at his throat.
इत्येवं स्मृतिवाक्यानि मुनिना पठितानि वै
Thus, these statements of smṛti were recited by the sage.
इति श्रुत्वा तु सा वेश्या म्लेच्छायाश्चांशसंभवा
Hearing this, that courtesan, who was born from a portion of the Mlecchas,
वेतसैस्ताडयित्वा तं पुनः कृत्वा शुकं स्वयम्
Striking him with canes, she again made him into a parrot by her own power.
तदा स्वर्णवती देवी कृत्वा नारीमयं वपुः
Then the goddess Svarṇavatī, having assumed a female form,
पुनः श्येनीवपुः कृत्वा तद्देशाद्यातुमुद्यता
Again taking the form of a hawk, she prepared to leave that place.
मकरंदस्तु तां दृष्ट्वा कृष्णांशेन समन्विताम् चरणावुपसंगृह्य स्वगेहे तामवासयत्
Makaraṃda, seeing her endowed with a portion of Krishna, took hold of her feet and brought her to his own house.
शोभनापि च संबुध्य पञ्जरान्तमुपस्थिता 3.3.28.
Śobhanā, having awakened, arrived at the interior of the cage.
किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि विना तं रमणं परम्
What shall I do? Where shall I go, without that supreme beloved?
तत्र स्थितं च पैशाचं मायामदविशारदम्
There stood a Piśāca, skilled in the magic of intoxication.
महामदस्तु संतुष्टो गत्वा वै शिवमंदिरम्
Mahāmada, being satisfied, went to the temple of Shiva.
तदा प्रसन्नो भगवान्वचनं प्राह सेवकम् मया सह समागच्छ मयूरनगरं प्रति
Then the blessed Lord, pleased, spoke to his servant: 'Come with me to Mayūranagara.'
इत्युक्तस्तेन पैशाचो नटैः पंचसहस्रकैः
Thus addressed by him, the Piśāca went with five thousand dancers.
इन्दुलश्च तथाह्लादो बोधितो विष्णुमायया मयूरनगरं प्राप्य मकरंदमुपाययौ
Indula and Tāhlāda, awakened by the illusion of Vishnu, reached Mayūranagara and approached Makaraṃda.
तदा तु शोभना वेश्या सहुरेण बलैस्सह
Then Śobhanā, the courtesan, together with Sahura and his forces,
सर्वतश्चोत्थितो वातो महामेघसमन्वितः ६८ दृष्ट्वा तां भैरवीं मायां तमोभूतां समन्ततः
From all sides arose a wind accompanied by great clouds; seeing that terrifying illusion, darkness spread everywhere.
शनिभल्लेन तां मायां भस्म कृत्वा महाबलः 3.3.28.
With the weapon of Śani, that mighty one reduced the illusion to ashes.
तदा तु शोभना नारी काममायां चकार ह
Then Śobhanā, the woman, created an illusion of desire.
मोहिताः क्षत्रियाः सर्वे मुमुहुर्लास्यदर्शनात्
All the Kṣatriyas were bewildered and lost consciousness at the sight of the dance.
तदा स्वर्णवती देवी कामाक्षी ध्यानतत्परा मयूरध्वजमागम्य निगडैस्तान्बबंध ह
Then Svarṇavatī, the goddess Kāmākṣī, absorbed in meditation, came to Mayūradhvaja and bound them with chains.
महामदस्तु तज्ज्ञात्वा रुद्रध्यानपरायणः
Mahāmada, knowing this, became devoted to meditation on Rudra.
व्याघ्राः सिंहा वराहाश्च वानरा दंशका नराः
Tigers, lions, boars, monkeys, biting men,
तदा स्वर्णवती देवी कामाक्षीध्यानतत्परा
Then Svarṇavatī, the goddess Kāmākṣī, absorbed in meditation,
तया तार्क्ष्यास्समुत्पन्नाः शरभाश्च महाबलाः
By her, Garudas were produced, and also mighty Śarabhas.
हाहाभूते च तत्सैन्ये दिक्षु विद्राविते सति
When cries of terror arose and that army was routed in all directions,
सहुरस्तैर्नटैस्सार्द्धं चाह्लादेनैव चूर्णितः
Sahura was crushed together with those dancers, overwhelmed with delight.
एवं च मुनिशार्दूल चतुर्मास्स्वभवद्रणः इति ते कथितं विप्र चान्यत्किं श्रोतुमिच्छसि ।। 3.3.28.
Thus, O best of sages, the battle lasted for four months; this has been told to you, O brahmin—what else do you wish to hear?
कुत्र स्थाने कथं जाता तत्सर्वं कृपया वद
In what place and how did it occur? Please tell me all of this out of kindness.
वसंतसमये प्राप्ते क्रीडंत्यत्र दिवौकसः
When the spring season arrived, the celestial beings played there.
मंजुघोषा च स्वर्वेश्या शुकस्थाने समागता
Manjughosha, the queen of song, gathered at the abode of Shuka.
