इष्टिशुद्धरवः प्रोक्त इस्तिनी मसपावनी आहुतिर्वै आजु इति ददाति च दधाति च
The pure sound for sacrifice is called 'ishti', 'istinī' is the purifier of meat; 'ahuti' is called 'aju', and both 'dadati' and 'dadhati' are used.
पितृपैतरभ्राता च बादरः पतिरेव च
Father, paternal ancestor, brother, 'badara', and husband are so called.
जानुस्थाने जैनुशब्दः सप्तसिंधुस्तथैव च
At the knee, the word 'jainu' is used; likewise, 'saptasindhu' is so called.
रविवारे च संडे च फाल्गुने चैव फर्वरी
On Sunday, in 'sande', in Phalguna, and also in 'pharvari'.
या पवित्रा सप्तपुरी तासु हिंसा प्रवर्तते
In those seven holy cities, indeed, violence arises.
म्लेच्छदेशे बुद्धिमतो नरा वै म्लेच्छधर्मिणः
In the lands of the foreigners, intelligent men follow the customs of the foreigners.
म्लेच्छराज्यं भारते च तद्द्वीपेषु स्मृतं तथा 3.1.5.
The rule of the foreigners is declared in Bhārata and likewise on those islands.
तच्छ्रुत्वा मुनयः सर्वे रोदनं चक्रिरे बहु
Hearing this, all the sages wept greatly.
कलियुगभूपाख्यानवर्णनम् सूतः प्राह शृणुष्वेदं सरस्वत्याः प्रभावतः
The narration of the kings of Kali Yuga is described.
म्लेच्छाः प्राप्ता न तत्स्थाने काश्यपो नाम वै द्विजः
The foreigners arrived at that place; there was a twice-born named Kāśyapa.
आर्यावती च तत्पत्नी दश पुत्रानकल्मषान्
His wife was Āryāvatī, and they had ten sinless sons.
उपाध्यायो दीक्षितश्च पाठकः शुक्लमिश्रकौ
The preceptor, the initiated one, the reciter, and Śuklamiśra—these two,
चतुर्वेदीति कथिता नामतुल्यगुणाः स्मृताः
They are called 'knowers of the four Vedas,' remembered as having names and virtues alike.
काश्मीरे प्राप्तवान्सोऽपि जगदम्बां सरस्वतीम्
He too reached Kashmir and worshipped the Mother of the World, Sarasvatī.
धूपैर्दीपैश्च नैवेद्यैः पुष्पांजलिसमन्वितः
With incense, lamps, offerings, and handfuls of flowers,
भोऽसि त्वं जगदंबा जगतः किं मां बहिर्न यसि
O Mother, you are the Mother of the World; why do you not come out to me?
देवि त्वं सुरहेतोर्धर्मद्रोहिणमाशु हंसि मातः
Goddess, for the sake of the gods, you quickly destroy the betrayer of dharma, O Mother.
अंब त्वं बहुरूपा हुंकारा द्धूम्रलोचनं हसि 3.1.6.
Mother, you are of many forms; with a roar, you slew Dhumralocana.
दंभं मोहं घोरं गर्वं हत्वा सदा सुखं शेषे तदा प्रसन्ना सा देवी भो मुनेस्तस्य मानसे
Having destroyed hypocrisy, delusion, terrible pride, you always remain in happiness; then that goddess became pleased in the mind of that sage.
वासं कृत्वा ददौ ज्ञानं मिश्रदेशे मुनिर्गतः
Having made her abode, she bestowed knowledge; the sage went to the land of the foreigners.
संख्यादशसहस्रं च नरवृन्दं द्विजन्मनाम्
A multitude of ten thousand twice-born men,
तैः सार्द्धमार्यदेशे स सरस्वत्याः प्रसादतः
Along with them, in the land of the noble ones, by the grace of Sarasvatī, he (remained).
तेषामार्यसमूहानां देव्याश्च वरदानतः
Among those noble groups, and by the boon granted by the goddess,
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च तद्भूपः काश्यपो मुनिः
Their sons and grandsons, and that sage Kāśyapa, the king,
राज्यपुत्राख्यदेशे च शूद्राश्चाष्टसहस्रकाः
In the region called Rājyaputra, there were also eight thousand Śūdras.
मागधं नाम तत्पुत्रमभिषिच्य ययौ मुनिः
Having anointed his son named Māgadha, the sage departed.
सूतं पौराणिकं नत्वा विष्णुध्यानपरोऽभवत्
Having bowed to Sūta, the narrator of the Purāṇas, he became devoted to meditation on Viṣṇu.
नित्यनैमित्तिकं कृत्वा पप्रच्छुरिदमादरात् कलौ राज्यं कृतं यैस्तु व्यासशिष्य वदस्व नः ।।3.1.6.
Having performed the regular and occasional rites, he respectfully asked this: 'O disciple of Vyāsa, tell us by whom the kingdom was established in the Kali age.'
मागधो मागधे देशे प्राप्तवान्काश्यपात्मजः
Māgadha, the son of Kāśyapa, attained the land of Māgadha.
पितृराज्यं स्मृतं तेन त्वार्यदेशः पृथक्कृतः
By him, the ancestral kingdom was remembered, and the noble land was made distinct.
