एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरश्चामुंडो लक्षसैन्यपः
Meanwhile, the hero Cāmuṇḍa, commander of a hundred-thousand-strong army, appeared.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धं शतघ्रीरणसंस्थयोः
A great battle took place between the two, both equipped with missile-launchers.
रक्तबीजः समागम्य गजस्थस्त्वरितो बली
Raktabīja, swift and powerful, arrived mounted on an elephant.
केचिच्छूरा हता युद्धे केचित्तत्र पराजिताः
Some warriors were slain in battle, and others were defeated there.
प्रभग्नं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा तालनः परिघायुधः ।। जघान तेन स गजं चामुंडो भूमिमागतः
Seeing his own forces shattered, Tālana, armed with a mace, struck the elephant; Cāmuṇḍa fell to the ground.
खड्गयुद्धपरो वीरस्तालनं पीरघायुधम्
The hero, expert in sword-fighting, confronted Tālana, who wielded a heavy mace.
लक्षणस्त्वरितो गत्वा स्वभल्लेन च तं रिपुम्
Lakṣaṇa, hastening forward, struck that enemy with his own arrow.
सहस्रं रक्तबीजाश्च खड्ग शक्त्यृष्टिपाणयः
A thousand warriors, followers of Raktabīja, armed with swords, spears, and javelins.
आह्लादाद्याश्च ते शूरा रक्तबीजभयातुराः
Those valiant ones, joyful at first, became distressed by fear of Raktabīja.
ब्रह्मानंदस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा गत्वा स्वपितरं प्रति 3.3.27.
Brahmānanda, seeing them, went to his own father.
श्रुत्वा परिमलो राजा प्रेमविह्वलगद्गदः
Hearing this, King Parimala was overcome with love and spoke in a trembling voice.
तदा तु देवकी देवी नृपतिं प्रेमतत्परम्
Then Queen Devakī, filled with affection, addressed the king.
भवता संपरित्यक्ता विचरामोऽन्यभूपतिम्
Having been abandoned by you, we wander to another king.
इति श्रुत्वा च नृपतिः परमा नंदनिर्भरः स्वकीयं लक्षसैन्यं च तत्पतिश्चोदयः कृतः
Hearing this, the king, overwhelmed with supreme joy, ordered his own hundred-thousand-strong army to be mobilized.
ततः पंचदिनान्ते तु महीराजस्समागतः तयोश्चासीन्महयुद्धं मासमात्रं भयानकम्
Then, after five days, the king of the earth arrived, and between the two there was a great and terrible battle that lasted for a month.
प्रभाते विमले जाते कृष्णांशो लक्षसैन्यपः चिच्छेद च शिरस्तेषां चामुंडानां पृथक्पृथक्
At dawn, when the sky was clear, Krishnaamsha, with his army of a hundred thousand, severed the heads of the Chamuṇḍas, each one separately.
छिन्ने शिरसि ते सर्वे लक्षवीरा बभूविरे
When their heads were cut off, all those hundred thousand warriors became alive again.
विस्मितश्चैव कृष्णांशो भयभीतस्तदा मुने
Krishnaamsha was astonished and, at that moment, filled with fear, O sage.
कृष्णांश उवाच त्वया ततमिदं विश्वं शब्दमात्रनिरंतरम्
Krishnaamsha said: "This universe, pervaded by you, is nothing but continuous sound."
रक्तबीजविनाशाय चामुंडारूपधारिणि 3.3.27.
O you who have assumed the form of Chamuṇḍā for the destruction of Raktabīja!
इति श्रुत्वा स्तवं देवी वरदा सर्वकारिणी
Hearing this hymn, the goddess, the granter of boons and accomplisher of all, [was pleased].
भस्मीभूते लक्षरिपौ चामुण्डो भूमिमागतः भूमिराजस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा भयभीतः समागतः उवाच वचनं राजा क्षमस्व मम दुष्कृतम्
When the hundred-thousand-fold enemy was reduced to ashes, Chamuṇḍa came to the earth; the king of the earth, hearing this, came in fear and said these words: "Forgive my wrongdoing."
महीपतेश्च वचनान्महद्भयमुपागतम् भवांश्च मम संबन्धी वयं वै तव किंकराः
Because of the king's words, great fear arose; and he said, "You are related to me, and we are indeed your servants."
इति श्रुत्वा परिमलो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् शरण्यं शरणं याहि विष्णुभक्तं दयापरम्
Hearing this, Parimala said to the king: "Go for refuge to the compassionate devotee of Vishnu, who is the giver of shelter."
इति श्रुत्वा भूमिराजो द्विजरूपधरो बली
Hearing this, the king of the earth, powerful and assuming the form of a twice-born, [acted accordingly].
तदा तु लक्षणो वीरः कृत्वा स्नेहं नृपोपरि
Then Lakṣaṇa, the hero, showed affection toward the king.
फाल्गुने मासि संप्राप्ते सर्वे स्वंस्वं गृहं ययुः
When the month of Phālguna arrived, everyone returned to their own homes.
बलखानेर्गयाश्राद्धमचीकरदविप्लुतः ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास सहस्रं वेदतत्परान्
Balakhāna, overwhelmed, performed the ancestral rites at Gayā, and fed a thousand Brahmins devoted to the Vedas.
कार्तिक्यामिंदुवारे च कृत्तिकाव्यतिपातभे
In the month of Kārtika, on a Monday, under the conjunction of Kṛttikā and Vyatipāta—
