प्रतोदं स्वर्णरचितं नानारत्नसमन्वितम्
A whip made of gold, adorned with various gems,
तदा परिमलापुत्रः कुंठितः प्राह भूपतिम्
Then the son of Parimala, subdued, spoke to the king.
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ वीरः कान्यकुब्जं महोत्तमम् कस्त्वं प्राप्तो हयारूढो निर्भयः क्षत्रियोत्तमः
Having said this, the hero departed for the great city of Kanyakubja. 'Who are you, arriving here on horseback, fearless best of Kshatriyas?'
स होवाच महाराज प्रेषितश्चंद्रवंशिना
He replied, 'O great king, I have been sent by the Chandravamsha.'
महीराजश्च बलवान्सकुलं चंद्रवंशिनम्
The powerful king, along with the Chandravamsha clan,
अतस्त्वं स्वबलैस्सार्द्धं सहाह्लादादिभिर्युतः
Therefore, you, together with your own forces and accompanied by Ahlada and others,
इत्युक्तो लक्षणस्तेन जयचंद्रं प्रणम्य सः
Thus addressed by him, Lakshana bowed to Jayachandra.
जयचंद्रस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा चाहूय जननायकम्
And Jayachandra, having heard this, summoned the leader of the people.
राजा परिमलः क्रूरस्त्यक्त्वा मां निजभूपतिम्
King Parimala, being cruel, abandoned me, his own sovereign.
प्रियं संबधिनं मत्वा संत्यक्तास्तेन रक्षकाः 3.3.27.
Considering his kinsman dear, he dismissed the guards.
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं कृष्णांशः प्राह नम्रधीः अतो वै त्वां समुत्सृज्य भूमिराजवशं गतः
Hearing these words, Krishna's portion spoke humbly: 'Therefore, having abandoned you, the land has come under the king's control.'
भवान्वै सर्वधर्मज्ञस्तत्क्षमस्वापराधकम्
You indeed know all dharmas; therefore, forgive the offender.
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं जयचंद्रो महीपतिः शीघ्रं व्रज त्वं सकुलो नो चेन्नो गंतुमर्हसि
Hearing these words, King Jayachandra said: 'Go quickly, you and your clan, otherwise you are not permitted to stay.'
इति श्रुत्वा विहस्याह कृष्णांशस्सर्वमोहनः तद्देयं देहि मे राजन्गृहाण भुक्तिमूल्यकम्
Hearing this, Krishna's portion, the bewilderer of all, laughed and said: 'Give me that which is to be given, O king, and accept the due payment.'
इत्युक्तस्स तु भूपालः कृष्णांशेन विलज्जितः
Thus addressed, the king was embarrassed before Krishna's portion.
तदा वै सकुलो वीरश्चाह्लादो लक्षणान्वितः
Then the heroic Sakula, endowed with auspicious marks, and Ahlada—
कुठारनगरं प्राप्य नृपदुर्गं रुरोध ह
Having reached the city of Kuṭhāra, he besieged the fortress of the king.
सैन्यायुत युतं भूपं वामनं लक्षणो बली
The king, Lakṣaṇa, mighty and of the Vāmana lineage, was accompanied by an army of tens of thousands.
यमुनाजलमुत्तीर्य कल्पक्षेत्रमवाप्तवान् पुरस्कृत्य ययौ वीरो लक्षणो बलवत्तरः
Crossing the waters of the Yamunā, he arrived at the field of Kalpa; the heroic Lakṣaṇa, stronger than before, advanced at the forefront.
नदीं वेत्रवतीं रम्यां समागम्य बलैस्सह 3.3.27.
He reached the beautiful river Vetravatī together with his forces.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरश्चामुंडो लक्षसैन्यपः
Meanwhile, the hero Cāmuṇḍa, commander of a hundred-thousand-strong army, appeared.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धं शतघ्रीरणसंस्थयोः
A great battle took place between the two, both equipped with missile-launchers.
रक्तबीजः समागम्य गजस्थस्त्वरितो बली
Raktabīja, swift and powerful, arrived mounted on an elephant.
केचिच्छूरा हता युद्धे केचित्तत्र पराजिताः
Some warriors were slain in battle, and others were defeated there.
प्रभग्नं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा तालनः परिघायुधः ।। जघान तेन स गजं चामुंडो भूमिमागतः
Seeing his own forces shattered, Tālana, armed with a mace, struck the elephant; Cāmuṇḍa fell to the ground.
खड्गयुद्धपरो वीरस्तालनं पीरघायुधम्
The hero, expert in sword-fighting, confronted Tālana, who wielded a heavy mace.
लक्षणस्त्वरितो गत्वा स्वभल्लेन च तं रिपुम्
Lakṣaṇa, hastening forward, struck that enemy with his own arrow.
सहस्रं रक्तबीजाश्च खड्ग शक्त्यृष्टिपाणयः
A thousand warriors, followers of Raktabīja, armed with swords, spears, and javelins.
आह्लादाद्याश्च ते शूरा रक्तबीजभयातुराः
Those valiant ones, joyful at first, became distressed by fear of Raktabīja.
ब्रह्मानंदस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा गत्वा स्वपितरं प्रति 3.3.27.
Brahmānanda, seeing them, went to his own father.
