तद्विवाहार्थमुद्योगः कृतः पित्रा स्वयंवरः तामुद्वाह्म विधानेन स्वगेहाय ययौ मुदा
For her marriage, her father arranged a svayaṃvara; she was married according to proper rites and joyfully went to her new home.
तयोस्समागमो जातः पुत्रोऽयं जननायकः
Their union took place, and this son, Jananāyaka, was born.
जित्वा भूपान्बलाद्वीरः सिंधुतीरलनिवासिनः
The heroic one conquered by force the kings dwelling along the banks of the Sindhu.
एकदा तु महीराजः स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः
Once, the great king, surrounded by his army, set out.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धं जननायकभूपयोः
There was a great battle between Jananāyaka and the king.
त्यक्त्वा राष्ट्रं च सकुलः संप्राप्तश्च महावतीम्
Abandoning his kingdom and family, he arrived at Mahāvatī.
निवासं कृतवांस्तत्र स्वनाम्ना प्रथितं भुवि
There he established his residence, and became renowned on earth by his own name.
तदासौ च महीराजो महीपत्यनुमोदितः आदेशं कृतवान्राजा तस्य बंधनहेतवे
Then that great king, with the approval of the other rulers, ordered his capture.
स च नेत्रवतीकूले संप्राप्ते लक्ष सैन्यपः
He, with a hundred thousand soldiers, reached the bank of the Netravatī.
स तदा खड्गमादाय बाहुशाली यतेंद्रियः 3.3.27.
Then, taking up his sword, strong-armed and self-controlled, he advanced.
सेनापतेश्च मुकुटं गजस्थस्य गृहीतवान्
He seized the crown of the general who was seated on an elephant.
भवान्वृत्तिकरो मह्यं क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणस्य वै
You are a Kṣatriya, the provider for me, a Brāhmaṇa.
इति श्रुत्वा स विनयं दत्त्वा तस्मै शुभं वसु
Hearing this, he respectfully gave him auspicious wealth.
दृष्ट्वा तत्र वटच्छायां श्रमेणातीव कर्षितः
There, seeing the shade of a banyan tree, he, greatly exhausted from fatigue, rested.
तदा तु वामनो ज्ञात्वा स्वदूतैस्तत्र कारणम्
Then Vāmana, having learned the reason from his own messengers, understood.
हृते तस्मिंश्च दिव्याश्वे प्रबुद्धो जननायकः
When the divine horse was stolen, Jananāyaka awoke.
अश्वांघ्रिचिह्नमालोक्य वामनं प्राप्य निर्भयः
Seeing the mark of the horse’s hoof, he fearlessly approached Vāmana.
क्षत्रियाणां हि संहास्यो भयदो भुवि सर्वदा
He is always a cause of laughter for Kṣatriyas, but a bringer of fear on earth.
नो चेत्त्वां वै सनगरं कृष्णांशः क्षपयिष्यति
Otherwise, the portion of Krishna will surely destroy your city.
भयभीतो विनिश्चित्य प्रददौ हरिनागरम् ।। 3.3.27.
Frightened by this threat, he decided to hand over Harinagara.
प्रतोदं स्वर्णरचितं नानारत्नसमन्वितम्
A whip made of gold, adorned with various gems,
तदा परिमलापुत्रः कुंठितः प्राह भूपतिम्
Then the son of Parimala, subdued, spoke to the king.
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ वीरः कान्यकुब्जं महोत्तमम् कस्त्वं प्राप्तो हयारूढो निर्भयः क्षत्रियोत्तमः
Having said this, the hero departed for the great city of Kanyakubja. 'Who are you, arriving here on horseback, fearless best of Kshatriyas?'
स होवाच महाराज प्रेषितश्चंद्रवंशिना
He replied, 'O great king, I have been sent by the Chandravamsha.'
महीराजश्च बलवान्सकुलं चंद्रवंशिनम्
The powerful king, along with the Chandravamsha clan,
अतस्त्वं स्वबलैस्सार्द्धं सहाह्लादादिभिर्युतः
Therefore, you, together with your own forces and accompanied by Ahlada and others,
इत्युक्तो लक्षणस्तेन जयचंद्रं प्रणम्य सः
Thus addressed by him, Lakshana bowed to Jayachandra.
जयचंद्रस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा चाहूय जननायकम्
And Jayachandra, having heard this, summoned the leader of the people.
राजा परिमलः क्रूरस्त्यक्त्वा मां निजभूपतिम्
King Parimala, being cruel, abandoned me, his own sovereign.
प्रियं संबधिनं मत्वा संत्यक्तास्तेन रक्षकाः 3.3.27.
Considering his kinsman dear, he dismissed the guards.
