छित्त्वा बाणं च रणजित्तथैव च रिपोर्द्धनुः
He cut the arrow and also the enemy's bow, as did Rañajit.
अमर्षवशमापन्नो यथा दंडैर्भुजंगमः
Overcome by rage, just as a serpent is subdued by rods.
संधाय तर्जयित्वा च शत्रुकंठमताडयत्
He threatened and struck the enemy's throat, having taken aim.
हते तस्मिन्महावीर्ये ब्रह्मानंदश्च दुःखितः संध्याकाले तु संप्राप्ते भाद्रकृष्णाष्टमीदिने ।। 3.3.26.
When that mighty hero was slain, Brahmananda was distressed; and when evening came, on the eighth day of the bright half of Bhadra—
कपाटं सुदृढं कृत्वा सैन्यैः षष्टिसहस्रकैः
He made the gate very strong, with sixty thousand soldiers.
महीराजस्तु बलवान्पुत्रशोकेन दुःखितः
The powerful king of the earth was afflicted with grief for his son.
शिरीषाख्यपुरं रम्यं यथा शून्यं मया कृतम् क्षयं यास्यंति मद्बाणैः सर्वे ते चंद्रवंशिनः
Just as I made the delightful city called Shirisha empty, so too will all those descendants of the lunar dynasty be destroyed by my arrows.
इत्युक्त्वा धुंधुकारं वै चाह्वयामास भूपतिः
Having spoken thus, the king summoned Dhundhukara.
इति श्रुत्वा धुंधुकारो गत्वा शीघ्रं च देहलीम्
Hearing this, Dhundhukara quickly went to the threshold.
तदाष्टलक्षसहितो महीराजो महाबलः
Then the mighty king, accompanied by eight hundred thousand, [set forth].
भाद्रकृष्णदशम्यां च मलना शोककातरा
On the tenth day of the bright half of Bhadra, Malana was overcome with sorrow.
अये कच्छपदेशीय गोतमान्वयसंभव
O you of the Kacchapadeshiya region, descended from the lineage of Gautama,
पुत्रमाह्लादमाहूय सानुजं मत्प्रियंकरम्
She called her son Ahlada, along with his younger brother, both dear to her.
मलनां दुःखितां प्राह न त्वायास्यति स प्रभुः
To the grieving Malana, she said: 'That lord will not come to you.'
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं रुरोद मलना सती
Hearing these words, Malana, the virtuous one, wept.
हा रामांश महाबाहो वत्स कृष्णांश सुन्दर
'Alas, O Rama's portion, mighty-armed one, child, beautiful Krishna's portion!'
तदा परिमलापुत्रो दृष्ट्वा राज्ञीं तथा गताम्
Then Parimala's son, seeing the queen in such a state,
रोमहर्षण नो ब्रूहि सोऽयं कस्तेन किं कृतम्
'Romaharshana, tell us: who is this, what did he do?'
पिता परिमलस्यैवामात्योऽनंगमहीपतेः
The father of Parimala was the minister of Anangamahi, the king.
तस्य कन्या समाजाता नाम्ना परिमला मुने 3.3.27.
O sage, his daughter was born, named Parimala.
तद्विवाहार्थमुद्योगः कृतः पित्रा स्वयंवरः तामुद्वाह्म विधानेन स्वगेहाय ययौ मुदा
For her marriage, her father arranged a svayaṃvara; she was married according to proper rites and joyfully went to her new home.
तयोस्समागमो जातः पुत्रोऽयं जननायकः
Their union took place, and this son, Jananāyaka, was born.
जित्वा भूपान्बलाद्वीरः सिंधुतीरलनिवासिनः
The heroic one conquered by force the kings dwelling along the banks of the Sindhu.
एकदा तु महीराजः स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः
Once, the great king, surrounded by his army, set out.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धं जननायकभूपयोः
There was a great battle between Jananāyaka and the king.
त्यक्त्वा राष्ट्रं च सकुलः संप्राप्तश्च महावतीम्
Abandoning his kingdom and family, he arrived at Mahāvatī.
निवासं कृतवांस्तत्र स्वनाम्ना प्रथितं भुवि
There he established his residence, and became renowned on earth by his own name.
तदासौ च महीराजो महीपत्यनुमोदितः आदेशं कृतवान्राजा तस्य बंधनहेतवे
Then that great king, with the approval of the other rulers, ordered his capture.
स च नेत्रवतीकूले संप्राप्ते लक्ष सैन्यपः
He, with a hundred thousand soldiers, reached the bank of the Netravatī.
स तदा खड्गमादाय बाहुशाली यतेंद्रियः 3.3.27.
Then, taking up his sword, strong-armed and self-controlled, he advanced.
