इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं ब्रह्मानन्दो महाबलः
Hearing those dreadful words, Brahmananda, mighty in strength,
महीराजस्तु कलही सैन्यायुतमहात्मजः
But the king, quarrelsome, with an army and heroic sons,
तयोश्चासीन्महयुद्धं सेनयोरुभयोर्भुवि
Between the two, there was a great battle on the earth between both armies.
लक्षणश्चाभयं शूरं देवसिंहो महीपतिम् 3.3.26.
Lakshana, fearless and heroic, was like a lion among kings.
लक्षणः कामसेनं च देवो रणजितं तदा
Lakshana then defeated Kamasena, the god, in battle.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे ब्रह्मा बद्ध्वा वै तालनं बली
Meanwhile, Brahma, powerful, bound Talana.
लक्षणं छिन्नधन्वानं पुनर्बद्ध्वा महाबलः
Lakshana, whose bow had been broken, was again bound by the mighty one.
हाहाभूते योगिसैन्ये प्रद्रुते सर्वतो दिशम्
When the yogi army was thrown into confusion, fleeing in all directions,
ब्रह्मानन्दोऽयमायातो मम सैन्य क्षयंकरः
Brahmananda has now come, bringing destruction to my army.
इत्युक्त्वा तास्समादाय ब्रह्मानन्दमुपाययौ
Having said this, he gathered them and brought Brahmananda.
कृष्णांशस्तत्र बलवान्नभोमार्गेण तं प्रति
Krishna's portion, powerful, approached him by the path of the sky.
तदा तु मूर्छिते तस्मिन्मोचयित्वा च ता मुदा
Then, when he had fainted, they joyfully released them.
पराजिते योगिसैन्ये ब्रह्मानंदो महाबलः
With the yogi army defeated, Brahmananda, mighty in strength,
महीराजस्तु संप्राप्तो महीपत्यनुमोदितः 3.3.26.
The king then arrived, approved by the lord of the earth.
नृहरश्चाभयं शूरं मर्दनश्चैव रूपणम्
Nṛhara, fearless and valiant, and Mardana, too, stood forth in their forms.
चामुण्डः कामसेनं च धनुर्युद्धमचीकरत्
Cāmuṇḍa engaged in battle with Kāmasena, fighting with bows.
छित्त्वा धनुस्तमागत्य खड्गयुद्धमचीकरत् तमाह वचनं क्रुद्धोऽभयो युद्धार्थमुद्यतः
After cutting the bow, he approached and began sword-fighting; then, enraged and ready for battle, Abhaya spoke these words to him:
भवान्वै मातृष्वस्रीयो महीराजस्य चात्मजः
You are indeed the son of the king of the earth, born of the maternal aunt.
क्षत्रियाणां परं धर्मं कथं संहर्तुमिच्छति
How do you wish to destroy the supreme duty of the kṣatriyas?
जघान तं च शिरसि स हतः स्वर्गमाययौ
He struck him on the head, and slain thus, he went to heaven.
मदनं गोपजातं च हत्वा सरदनो बली उत्तरांशश्च स ज्ञेयो मदनश्चोत्तरे लयः
Having slain Madana and the cowherd-born one, the mighty Saradana is to be known as the northern portion, and Madana's end was in the north.
रूपणश्च समागत्य मूर्छयित्वा च मर्दनम्
Rūpaṇa, having come together, caused Mardana to lose consciousness.
ब्रह्मानंदश्च बलवान्स बद्ध्वा तारकं रुषा
Brahmānanda, powerful, bound Tāraka in anger.
नृहरं रणजित्प्राप्य स्वभल्लेन तदा रुषा 3.3.26.
Nṛhara, having met Rañajit, was struck in anger by his own arrow.
स वै दुश्शासनांशश्च मृतस्तस्मिन्समागतः
He, who was a portion of Duśśāsana, died and joined there.
निहते नृहरे बंधौ मर्दनः क्रोधतत्परः
With Nṛhara, his kinsman, slain, Mardana became absorbed in wrath.
छित्त्वा तान्रणजिच्छूरस्स वै परिमलोद्भवः
Rañajit, the valiant hero, who arose from Parimala, cut them down.
मृतेऽस्मिन्मर्दने वीरे तदा सरदनो बली
When the hero Mardana was slain, then the mighty Saradana—
महत्कष्टमुपागम्य रणजिन्मलनोद्भवः
Having encountered great hardship, Rañajit, born of Malana, —
त्रिबंधौ निहते युद्धे तारकः क्रोधमूर्छितः
When the three kinsmen were slain in battle, Tāraka, overcome by anger,
