यादवश्च गजारूढस्तदा चंद्रावलीपतिः
The Yadava, mounted on an elephant, was then the lord of Candravali.
हरिनागरमारुह्य ब्रह्मानंदो महाबल.
Brahmananda, mighty in strength, ascended the city of Hari.
मर्दनं राजपुत्रं च रणजिद्ग जसंस्थितः
Mardana, the prince, renowned for victory in battle, was present.
रूपणो वै सरदनं हयारूढो जगाम ह नृहरं राजपुत्रं च शंखांशश्च जगाम ह
Rupana, indeed, mounted on a horse, went to Saradana; and Naraharin, the prince, and Sankhamsa also went.
तेषु संग्राममेतेषु चामुण्डोऽयुतसैन्यपः 3.3.26.
In that battle among them, Camunda, with a force of ten thousand, was present.
ददर्श नगरीं रम्यां चतुर्वर्णसमन्विताम्
He beheld the beautiful city, endowed with the four social orders.
महीपतिस्तु वै धूर्तो दुर्गद्वारि समागतः
The king, indeed cunning, arrived at the fortress gate.
मलना भ्रातरं दृष्ट्वा वचनं प्राह दुःखिता
Malanā, seeing her brother, spoke these words, distressed.
न प्राप्तं जल संस्थाने सुपुण्ये कीर्तिसागरे
Water was not obtained at the sacred and renowned reservoir.
विनाह्लादं च कृष्णांशं महद्दुःखमुपागतम् कान्यकुब्जात्समायातः कृष्णांशेन प्रयोजितः
Without delight and without Krishna's portion, great sorrow has come; one has arrived from Kanyakubja, sent by Krishna's portion.
देवीदत्तश्च नाम्नाऽयं स ते कार्यं करिष्यति
This one, named Devidatta, will accomplish your task.
कामाग्निपीडितं विप्रं चामुंडं च ददर्श ह
She saw Camunda, the brahmin tormented by the fire of desire.
धूर्तोऽयं ब्राह्मणो मातर्निश्चयं मां हरिष्यति
This cunning brahmin, O mother, will certainly take me away.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या लज्जितस्स महीपतिः
Hearing her words, the king became ashamed.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे ते वै ब्रह्माद्यास्तैः पराजिताः 3.3.26.
Meanwhile, those led by Brahma were defeated by them.
कपाटं सुदृढं कृत्वा महाचिंतामुपाययुः । महीराजस्तु बलवान्महीपत्यनुमोदितः
Having made the gate very strong, they fell into great anxiety; but the powerful king, approved by the rulers, remained.
प्रमदावनमागत्य षष्टिलक्षबलान्वितः तालनाद्याश्च चत्वारः शिरीषाख्यपुरं ययुः प्रययुस्ते सुखभ्रष्टा ददृशुर्हिमदं मुनिम्
Having come to the women's grove with an army of sixty thousand, the four led by Talanada went to the city called Sirisha; deprived of happiness, they saw the sage Himada.
प्रणम्योचुः शुचाविष्टा बलखा निर्मुने बली
Bowing, they spoke, afflicted with grief: 'O sage, O powerful one, O destroyer of strength!'
श्रुत्वाह हिमदो योगी महीराजेन नाशितः
Hearing this, the yogi Himada was destroyed by the king of the earth.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं कृष्णांशः शोकतत्परः
Upon hearing these dreadful words, Krishna's portion became absorbed in grief.
विललाप भृशं तत्र हा बन्धो धर्मजांशक
There, he lamented greatly, saying, 'Alas, my kinsman, offspring of Dharma!'
दर्शनं देहि मे क्षिप्रं नो चेत्प्राणांस्त्यजाम्यहम्
'Grant me your vision quickly, or else I will abandon my very life.'
इत्युक्तः स तु तद्भ्राता बलखानिः पिशाचगः कथित्वा सर्ववृत्तान्तं यथाजातं स्ववैशसम्
Thus addressed, his brother Balakhani, who moved among spirits, recounted all the events as they had occurred, including his own misfortune.
दिव्यं विमानमारुह्य गतो नाकं मनोरमम् 3.3.26.
Ascending a divine aerial chariot, he departed for the delightful heavens.
तदा दुःखी स कृष्णांशः कृत्वा भ्रातुस्तिलांजलिम्
Then Krishna's portion, stricken with sorrow, performed the sesame offering for his brother.
वेणुशब्देन कृष्णांशो ननर्त जनमोहनः
With the sound of the flute, Krishna's portion, the enchanter of people, began to dance.
मृदंगध्वनिना देवो लक्षणः कांस्यवाद्यकः
The god Lakshana played the mṛdaṅga, and the bronze cymbals resounded.
तदा तु मलना राज्ञी दृष्ट्वा तद्वामनोत्सवम्
At that time, Queen Malana, seeing that dwarf festival,
कृष्णांशो बन्धुसहितस्त्यक्त्वा मां मन्दभागिनीम्
Krishna's portion, together with his relatives, abandoned me, the unfortunate one.
इत्युक्तां मलनां दृष्ट्वा कृष्णांशः स्नेह कातरः
Seeing Malana thus addressed, Krishna's portion was overcome with affection.
