जयचंद्रस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा लक्षणं प्रेमविह्वलः
Jayachandra, seeing Lakṣaṇa, was overcome with love.
दत्त्वा ततोऽन्यदानानि गोवस्त्राभरणानि च
Then he gave further gifts—cows, garments, and ornaments.
सूत उवाच महीराजो वरं प्राप्तः शंकरात्पार्थिवार्चनात्
The Sūta said: The king obtained a boon from Śaṅkara by worshipping the lord of kings.
सप्तलक्षैश्च सहितः शिरीषाख्यपुरं ययौ 3.3.25.
Accompanied by seven lakhs, he went to the city called Śirīṣa.
सुखखानिस्तदा क्रुद्धो लक्षसैन्यसमन्वितः
Then Sukhakhāni, enraged, set out with an army of a hundred thousand.
पावकास्त्रेण बलवान्हत्वा दशसहस्रकम्
With the fiery weapon, the powerful one slew ten thousand.
अद्य त्वां च हनिष्यामि त्वं वा हन्ता रणे मम
Today I will kill you, or you will slay me in battle.
इति श्रुत्वा महीराजो रौद्रास्त्रं चाप आदधे
Hearing this, the king took up his bow and the fierce weapon.
सुखखानिस्तदाग्नेयं संदधौ तस्य शांतये
Then Sukhakhāni prepared the missile of fire to subdue him.
तदस्त्रं शिवतूणीरे गतं कार्यं विधाय तत्
That weapon, having accomplished its task, entered Śiva's quiver.
भ्रातुर्वैरमुपादाय जघान च रिपोर्बलम्
Taking up his brother's enmity, he struck down the enemy's forces.
भूमिराजस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा तद्बलाधिक्यमोहितः
The king, seeing him, was bewildered by the superiority of his forces.
क्रोशमात्रान्तरे गर्ता द्वादशैव मया कृताः
At a distance of a krosha, I made twelve pits.
शूराञ्जित्वा समुल्लंघ्य गर्तान्द्वादशसम्मितान् 3.3.25.
Having conquered the heroes, he leapt across the twelve pits.
इति श्रुत्वा प्रियं वाक्यं तद्राज्ञा सत्यभाषितम्
Hearing those pleasing words, truthfully spoken by that king,
दृष्ट्वा गर्तान्महावीरो हत्वा शूराञ्छतञ्छतम्
the great hero, having seen the pits, slew hundreds upon hundreds of warriors.
चामुंडस्तु तदागत्य शरायुतसमन्वितः
Then Cāmuṇḍa arrived there, equipped with a multitude of arrows.
बलखानिश्च महतीं सेनां तस्य जघान ह
He struck down the mighty divisions and the great army belonging to him.
त्रयोदशं गुप्तगर्तं तृणैराच्छादितं मृदा
The thirteenth hidden pit, covered with grass and earth,
पतितः सकपोतश्च स वीरो दैवमोहितः
into it fell that hero, together with a pigeon, deluded by fate.
विदीर्णस्तत्र चरणस्स पद्मो वत्सजस्य वै स्वपदैस्ताडयामास महीराजस्य तद्बलम्
There, the foot of the lotus-born son of Vatsa was torn, and with his own feet he struck the army of the king.
चामुंडस्तु तदागत्य बलखानेश्च वै शिरः
Then Cāmuṇḍa arrived there and struck off the head of Balakhāna.
गजमुक्ता च तच्छुत्वा चितामारोप्य वै पतिम्
Hearing this, Gajamuktā placed her husband upon the funeral pyre.
तदा ब्रह्मा स्ववध्वा च सार्द्धमागत्य तत्र वै 3.3.25.
Then Brahmā, together with his own wife, came there.
शून्यभूतं च नगरं भस्म कृत्वा स वै नृपः
That king reduced the city to ashes, leaving it desolate.
नागोत्सवाय प्रययौ सदैव कलहप्रियः
Always fond of conflict, he went to the festival of serpents.
दृष्ट्वा नागोत्सवं तत्र गीतनृत्यसमन्वितम्
There, seeing the serpent festival accompanied by song and dance,
राजन्महावतीग्रामे कीर्तिसागरमध्यगे पश्य त्वं तत्र गत्वा च ममैव वचनं कुरु
O king, in the village of Mahāvatī, in the midst of Kīrtisāgara, go there and do exactly as I say.
इति श्रुत्वा महीराजो धुंधुकारेण संयुतः प्राप्तः शिरीषविपिने तत्र वासमकारयत्
Hearing this, the king, accompanied by Dhuṃdhukāra, arrived in the Śirīṣa forest and made his dwelling there.
महीपतिस्तु नृपतिं नत्वा वै चन्द्रवंशिनम्
The lord of the earth, bowing to the king of the lunar dynasty,
