तालनः सिंहिनीसंस्थो गृहीत्वा परिघं मुदा
Tālana, stationed with the lioness, joyfully seized the iron club,
पंचशब्दगजारूढश्चाह्लादस्तोमरायुधः
Mounted on an elephant trumpeting five sounds, Āhlāda held a spear as his weapon,
कृष्णांशो बिन्दुलारूढो गृहीत्वा खड्गमुत्तमम्
Kṛṣṇāṃśa, mounted on Bindulā, took up the excellent sword,
देवो मनोरथारूढो भैरवं भल्लमादधौ 3.3.25.
The god, riding upon his wish, took up the Bhairava javelin.
लक्षणो धनुरादाय वैष्णवास्त्राणि वै पुनः
Lakṣaṇa, taking up his bow, again prepared the Vaiṣṇava weapons.
याममात्रमभूयुद्धं तेषां तैश्च समन्वितम्
For the duration of a yāma, there was battle between them, joined with those warriors.
ययौ स देहलीग्रामे शारदानंदनस्तदा ददौ कन्यां विधानेन धनधान्यादिसंवृताम्
Then Śāradānandana went to the village of Dehalī and, according to custom, gave his daughter, endowed with wealth and grain.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राप्तो महीपतिरुवाच तम्
Meanwhile, the king arrived and spoke to him.
अहो मित्र महावीर कीदृशी ते मतिः स्थिता
"Ah, friend, great hero, what is your intention now?"
लक्षणो धर्मरहितो वर्णसंकरसंयुतः तैर्युतश्च निवासो वै संत्याज्यो धर्मकोविदैः
Lakṣaṇa, devoid of dharma and associated with mixed castes, his residence with them should be abandoned by those who know dharma.
इति पद्माकरः श्रुत्वा सर्वमायाविशारदः स्वगेहे स्थापयामास कारागारे शिलामये
Thus, Padmākara, having heard all this and skilled in all magic arts, confined him in his own house, in a stone prison.
देव्याश्च वरदानेन देवसिंहस्तदा निशि
By the boon of the goddess, Devasimha, at night,
इंदुलाग्रे च तत्सर्वे गदित्वा तेन संयुतः
At the waxing of the moon, all of them, having spoken, were joined with him.
पद्माकरस्तु तच्छुत्वा कृत्वा मायां च शाम्बरीम् 3.3.25.
Padmākara, having heard this, performed the magic of Śambara.
इंदुलश्च तदा चापे संधाय शरमुत्तमम्
Then Indula, having fitted the excellent arrow to the bow,
तदा ते बोधिताः सर्वे कामास्त्रेण महाबलाः
Then all those mighty ones were awakened by the Kāma weapon.
बहिर्भूता: समाजग्मुः शत्रुसैन्यान्यनाशयन्
The enemy armies, having come forth, destroyed everything.
शारदानंदनो भूपस्तत्रागत्य विनम्य तान्
King Sharadānanda, arriving there, bowed to them.
नानाविधानि भोज्यानि प्रशस्याभरणानि च
He offered various kinds of foods and splendid ornaments.
कुमारिकां स्वकीयां च बहुरोदनतत्पराम् आगतो लक्षणो गेहं माघकृष्णाष्टमीदिने
His own daughter, devoted to preparing much rice, and Lakṣaṇa arrived at the house on the eighth day of the dark half of Māgha.
जयचंद्रस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा लक्षणं प्रेमविह्वलः
Jayachandra, seeing Lakṣaṇa, was overcome with love.
दत्त्वा ततोऽन्यदानानि गोवस्त्राभरणानि च
Then he gave further gifts—cows, garments, and ornaments.
सूत उवाच महीराजो वरं प्राप्तः शंकरात्पार्थिवार्चनात्
The Sūta said: The king obtained a boon from Śaṅkara by worshipping the lord of kings.
सप्तलक्षैश्च सहितः शिरीषाख्यपुरं ययौ 3.3.25.
Accompanied by seven lakhs, he went to the city called Śirīṣa.
सुखखानिस्तदा क्रुद्धो लक्षसैन्यसमन्वितः
Then Sukhakhāni, enraged, set out with an army of a hundred thousand.
पावकास्त्रेण बलवान्हत्वा दशसहस्रकम्
With the fiery weapon, the powerful one slew ten thousand.
अद्य त्वां च हनिष्यामि त्वं वा हन्ता रणे मम
Today I will kill you, or you will slay me in battle.
इति श्रुत्वा महीराजो रौद्रास्त्रं चाप आदधे
Hearing this, the king took up his bow and the fierce weapon.
सुखखानिस्तदाग्नेयं संदधौ तस्य शांतये
Then Sukhakhāni prepared the missile of fire to subdue him.
तदस्त्रं शिवतूणीरे गतं कार्यं विधाय तत्
That weapon, having accomplished its task, entered Śiva's quiver.
