बलखानिस्तु बलवाँल्लक्षसैन्यसमन्वितः 3.3.23.
Balakhani, powerful and accompanied by an army of a hundred thousand, was there.
अहोरात्रप्रमाणेन मासैकः पथि वै गतः व्यूहः स्वकीयसैन्यानां रचितो बलखानिना
In the span of a day and night, he traveled a month's journey on the road; Balakhani arranged the formation of his own army.
एको रथः स्थितो युद्धे तत्पश्चात्संस्थिता गजाः
One chariot stood in battle, and behind it were stationed the elephants.
तेषां पश्चात्क्रमाज्ज्ञेया पत्तयो दश संस्थिताः
Behind them, in order, were stationed ten companies of infantry.
एको रथो गजास्सर्वे शतार्द्धं तु हयास्तु ये
There was one chariot, all the elephants, and a hundred and fifty horses.
पञ्चायुतानि सेनायां सर्वे पदचराः स्मृताः
In the army, all the foot soldiers were counted as fifty thousand.
गजास्तु दशसाहस्रा मदमत्ताः पृथग्ययुः
The elephants, ten thousand in number, intoxicated with rut, advanced separately.
अभिनन्दनभूपस्य म्लेच्छाः पैशाचधर्मिणः
The mlecchas, followers of the Pisacha way, belonged to King Abhinandana.
एकलक्षः पदचरा भुशुण्डीपरिघायुधाः गजस्थास्तत्र संप्राप्ता यत्राह्लादमहा चमूः
One hundred thousand foot soldiers, armed with clubs and maces, mounted on elephants, arrived there where the great army of Ahlada was.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम्
Between the two, there was a great and tumultuous battle, causing one's hair to stand on end.
सप्ताहोरात्रमभवद्युद्धं समरशालि नाम् 3.3.23.
The battle called Samara-shali lasted for seven days and nights.
एकलक्षं हताः सर्वे बलखानेश्च सैन्यपैः हर्षिता बलखान्याद्या जय दुर्गे वचोऽब्रुवन्
All one hundred thousand were slain by the soldiers of Balakhani; the delighted Balakhani then spoke words of victory at the fortress.
दृष्ट्वा सैन्यविनाशं च राज्ञः सप्तकुमारकाः
Seeing the destruction of the army, the king's seven sons—
महानन्दश्च नन्दश्च परानन्दोपनन्दकौ
Mahananda, Nanda, Parananda, Upananda, and Kau—
गजस्थास्ते महावीरास्तोमरान्वयसंभवाः
These great heroes, born of the lineage of Tomara, were mounted on elephants.
भयभीताश्च ते सर्वे बलखानिमुपाययु
All of them, seized by fear, approached Balakhani.
अभ्यधावत वेगेन कपोतस्थो महाबलः
With great speed, the mighty one who dwelt upon the pigeon rushed forward.
उपनन्दं सूर्यवर्मा सुनन्दं प्रति तारकः
Tāraka advanced toward Sunanda, while Sūryavarmā confronted Upananda.
युध्यमानास्तु ते सर्वे परस्परं वधैषिणः
All of them fought, each intent on destroying the other.
पराजितास्तु ते पुत्रा बाह्लीकस्य महाबलाः
Then those powerful sons of Bāhlīka were defeated.
दृष्ट्वा तेषां बलं घोरमभिनन्दनभूमिपः कथितं कारणं राज्ञा यथा जातः पराजयः ।। 3.3.23.
Seeing their dreadful army, King Abhinandana explained to the king the reason for their defeat, as it had occurred.
इति श्रुत्वा तु कुतुकस्तमाश्वास्य महीपतिम् तत्सैन्यं मोहयामास शिलाभूतमचेतनम्
Hearing this, Kutuka comforted the king and bewildered that army, making it insensible like stone.
तदा केसरिणी नाट्या अष्टौ बद्ध्वा महाबलान्
Then Kesariṇī, through her dance, bound eight mighty warriors.
बाह्लीकश्च प्रसन्नात्मा बद्ध्वा तान्निगडैर्दृढैः
And Bāhlīka, with a tranquil mind, bound them with strong shackles.
देव्याश्च वरदानेन देवसिंहो भयातुरः
By the boon of the goddess, Devasiṃha, overcome by fear, was spared.
ज्ञात्वा स्वर्णवती देवी सर्वविद्याविशारदा
Knowing this, Svarṇavatī, the goddess skilled in all knowledge, understood.
दृष्ट्वा तु दंपती तत्र मकरंदं गृहे स्थितौ
There, seeing the couple, Makaranda and his wife, residing in the house—
कृष्णांशस्तु तदा दुःखी मकरन्दं वचोऽब्रवीत्
Then Kṛṣṇāṃśa, distressed, spoke to Makaranda.
कुलक्षये महत्पापं सुप्रोक्तं पूर्व सूरिभिः
The destruction of a family is a great sin, well declared by the wise of old.
इति श्रुत्वा तु तच्छयालः शूरायुतसमन्वितः कृष्णांशेन हयारूढो बाह्लीकं त्वरितो ययौ
Hearing this, his brother-in-law, accompanied by a host of heroes, quickly mounted his horse with Kṛṣṇāṃśa and went to Bāhlīka.
