दुर्गद्वारे तु प्राप्तायां तद्दोलायां च भार्गव
When she arrived at the fortress gate, and at that swing, O Bhārgava,
दोलासमीपमागत्य ददर्श रुचिराननाम्
Coming near the swing, he saw her, the one with a lovely face.
मुमोह बलवान्वीरो गोवर्द्धन कलांशकः
The powerful hero, a portion of Govardhana, became utterly bewildered.
मद्गृहं शीघ्रमागच्छ पत्नी मम भवाधुना
"Come quickly to my house; become my wife now."
कुलीनस्त्वं महावीर वह्निकुण्डात्समुद्भवः
"You are noble, O great hero, born from the fire-pit."
त्वद्योग्या भूपतेः कन्या चंद्रसूर्य्यान्वयस्य वै
"The daughter of the king, of the lunar and solar lineage, is suitable for you."
कन्याहं शूद्रजातेश्च बह्मचर्य्यव्रते स्थिता
"I am a maiden, born of the Śūdra caste, steadfast in the vow of celibacy."
बलाद्गृहीत्वा तां नारीं पस्पर्श हृदये स्वयम् मोहयित्वा नृपसुतं स देवः स्वगृहं ययौ
Seizing that woman by force, he himself touched her heart; having deluded the prince, that god went to his own house.
मकरन्दस्तु संबुद्धो मदनाग्निप्रपीडितः
Makaranda, awakened and tormented by the fire of love,
तत्स्नेहकातरं भूपं मकरंदं महाबलम् 3.3.21.
That king, Makaranda of great strength, was overcome by affection.
महावती पुरी रम्या तत्र कृष्णागृहं शुभम्
In the beautiful city of Mahavati, there was the auspicious house of Krishna.
रोदनं कुर्वती गाढं तव निन्दनतत्परा
She was weeping intensely there, intent on reproaching you.
आगमिष्यति वै वीरो बलैस्सार्द्धं महाबल
A mighty hero will come, together with his powerful forces.
जितो येन महावीरः पितृव्यो लहरस्तव
By whom your great-uncle Lahara, the mighty warrior, was defeated.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं मकरन्दो महीपतिः
Hearing these terrible words, King Makaranda
स्वसैन्यं च समाहूय त्रिलक्षं खड्गसंयुतम्
Summoned his own army of three hundred thousand, equipped with swords.
कृष्णांशस्तु गृहं प्राप्य बलखानिमुवाच तत् पञ्चलक्षबलैस्सार्द्धं मयूरनगरं ययौ
Krishna, having reached her house, spoke to the commander, and with an army of five hundred thousand, went to Mayura city.
शतघ्न्यः पञ्चसाहस्रा गजा दश सहस्रकाः उषित्वा पक्षमात्रं तु मार्गे पांचालके तदा
There were five thousand catapults and ten thousand elephants; staying for just half a week on the road in Pancala,
मकरंदस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा शनिभल्लकरः स्थितः
Hearing this, Makaranda stood firm, his arm adorned with a mace.
श्रुत्वा पदातयो लक्षं शतघ्नीवह्निमाददन् 3.3.21.
Hearing this, one hundred thousand foot soldiers took up catapults and fire.
ग्रामस्य दक्षिणद्वारे हयारूढास्तदा ययुः
At the southern gate of the village, the horse-mounted troops advanced.
एकलक्षं हयास्सर्वे मकरंदस्य भूपतेः
All the horses, one hundred thousand in number, belonged to King Makaranda.
तदा तु पश्चिमद्वारे गजा विंशत्सहस्रकाः
Then, at the western gate, there were twenty thousand elephants.
उष्ट्र रक्षा महावीराश्चत्वारिंशत्सहस्रकाः
There were forty thousand great warriors on camels for protection.
अहोरात्रमभूद्युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्
A fierce and hair-raising battle raged day and night.
त्यक्त्वा युद्धं तु ते सर्वे दुद्रुवुश्च दिशो दश
But abandoning the battle, they all fled in ten directions.
मनोरथस्थितो देवश्चाह्लादस्तु गजस्थितः
The god, seated in the chariot of desire, and Ahlada, mounted on an elephant.
सत्सरुं खड्गमुत्सृज्य चक्रुः शत्रुमहावधम्
The noble ones, abandoning their swords, wrought a great slaughter of the enemy.
वह्निपुत्रस्तु बलवान्वाजिनं च शिलामयम्
The powerful son of Agni had a horse made of stone.
कृष्णांशाद्याश्च ते शूरा रुरुधुस्सर्वतोदिशम् 3.3.21.
And those heroes, beginning with Krishnaamsha, surrounded all directions.
