कृष्णांशस्तु शुभां नारीं दृष्ट्वाश्चर्यमुपागतः स्वर्गलोकादिहायाता यदि वा पन्नगी स्वयम्
Krishna's portion, seeing that auspicious woman, was amazed, wondering if she had come from heaven or was herself a serpent maiden.
इति श्रुत्वा च सा प्राह मालाकारस्य वै सुता
Hearing this, the daughter of the garland-maker spoke.
पुष्पेणानेन भूपाल तुलिता भूपतेः सुता
With this flower, O king, the daughter of the king is equaled.
देवैश्च प्रार्थिता बाला रूपयौवनशालिनी
Sought by the gods, the maiden is endowed with beauty and youth.
शृणु तत्कारणं भूप मकरंदो यथा भवेत्
Hear now, O king, the reason for this, how Makaraṇḍa came to be.
अजेयोऽन्यैश्च कृष्णांशादृते त्वं जगतीतले
On earth, you are invincible by others except for Kṛṣṇāṃśa.
स राज्यं कारयामास धर्ममेघं हरिप्रियम्
He established a kingdom, a cloud of righteousness, dear to Hari.
मिथुनं जनयामास पावकात्सुंदराननम्
From the fire, he begot a pair, one with a beautiful face.
पञ्चमाब्दवया भूत्वा मकरंदो महाबलः
When Makaraṇḍa, of great strength, reached the age of five years,
द्वादशाब्दवयः प्राप्ते मकरंदे नृपप्रिये 3.3.21.
And when Makaraṇḍa, beloved of kings, attained the age of twelve,
शिलामयं महावेगं शत्रुसेनाक्षयंकरम्
A stone-formed, swift, and mighty force arose, destroying enemy armies.
तस्येदं सुंदरं दिव्यं विपिनं सुरपूजितम्
This beautiful, divine forest of his is worshipped by the gods.
इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं कृष्णांशः स्मरपीडितः
Hearing these words, Kṛṣṇāṃśa, afflicted by love, was moved.
देवसिंहस्तु कालज्ञो ज्ञात्वा मोहत्वमागतम्
Devasiṃha, knower of time, understood that delusion had arisen.
कृष्णांशस्तु ततस्सार्द्धं देवसिंहेन तन्मयः
Then Kṛṣṇāṃśa, together with Devasiṃha, became absorbed in that state.
मासान्ते गृहमागत्य राज्ञे सर्वान्न्यवेदयत् कृष्णांशो मोहमागत्य तुष्टाव जगदंबिकाम्
At the end of the month, returning home, he reported everything to the king; Kṛṣṇāṃśa, having come under delusion, praised the Mother of the Universe.
कृष्णांश उवाच पाहि मां कामदेवार्तं पुष्पवत्यै प्रबोधय
Kṛṣṇāṃśa said: Protect me, tormented by Kāma, awaken Puṣpavatī.
मधुकैटभसंमोहे महिषासुरघातिनि
O slayer of Mahiṣāsura, who bewildered Madhu and Kaiṭabha,
धूम्रलोचनसंदाहे चंडमुंडविनाशिनि
O destroyer of Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, who burned Dhūmralocana,
रक्तबीजासृक्कपीते सर्वदैत्यभयंकरे 3.3.21.
You who drank the blood of Raktabīja, ever terrifying to all demons,
निशुंभदैत्यसंहारे शुंभदैत्यविनाशिनि
In the destruction of the demon Niśuṃbha, O destroyer of the demon Śuṃbha,
इति स्तुत्वा च सुष्वाप स वीरः परमासने चकार प्रत्यहं देवी वरदाभयकारिणी
Thus having praised her, that hero slept upon the supreme seat; daily he worshipped the goddess, granter of boons and remover of fear.
एवं गते चतुर्मासे जलवृष्टिकरे मुने
When the four months of the rainy season had passed in this way, O sage,
कार्तिके कृष्णपक्षे तु गतोऽसौ देवसंयुतः
In the dark fortnight of Kārtika, he departed, accompanied by the gods.
पुष्पागृहमुपागम्य तत्र वासमचीकरत्
He went to the flower-house and took up residence there.
एकदा सुंदरं हार कृष्णांशेनैव गुंठितम् गृहीत्वा प्रययौ पुष्पा पुष्पवत्याश्च मंदिरे
Once, taking a beautiful necklace entwined with a portion of Krishna, Pushpa went to the house of Pushpavati.
सा तु ग्रैवेयकं दृष्ट्वा त्वष्ट्रेव रचितं प्रियम्
She, seeing the necklace, dear and crafted as if by Tvashtar,
अये सखि महामाये सत्यं कथय मेऽग्रतः
"O friend, O great enchantress, tell me the truth before me,"
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या मकरंदभयातुरा
Hearing her words, Makaramda, seized with fear,
जीवदानं च मे देहि तर्हि ते कथयाम्यहम् 3.3.21.
"Give me a promise of life, then I will tell you," she said.
