पराजिताश्च ते शूरा हतशेषा भयातुराः युद्धायाभिमुखं जग्मुर्धनुर्बाणविशारदाः
Those valiant ones, defeated and with only a few survivors, terrified, advanced again to battle, skilled in bow and arrow.
कृष्णांशस्तांस्तथा दृष्ट्वा शरवर्षसमन्वितान्
Seeing them thus, covered in a shower of arrows, Krishna's portion beheld them.
तेषां धनूंषि संछिद्य बद्ध्वा तान्युद्धदुर्मदान्
He cut their bows, bound those proud in battle.
पुत्राणां बन्धनं श्रुत्वा लहरो नृपसत्तमः
Hearing of the captivity of his sons, Laharā, the best of kings,
जलीभूते तथा सैन्ये जयन्तो बलवत्तरः लहरस्य ततः सेनामुवाह बहुयोजनम्
When the army was thus surrounded by water, Jayanta, being stronger, led Laharā's army for many yojanas.
तदा तु भगवान्देवो वरुणो यादसां पतिः
Then, the blessed god Varuṇa, lord of the aquatic beings,
लहरोऽपि प्रसन्नात्मा ज्ञात्वांशं जगतीतले 3.3.20.
Even Lahara, with a tranquil mind, having recognized his portion on the earth,
दत्त्वा च बहुधा द्रव्यं परिक्रम्य पुनःपुनः
Having given much wealth in many ways, he circumambulated again and again.
अंशास्तेऽपि महापूजां गृहीत्वा लहरप्रदाम्
Those portions too, having received the great worship that grants Lahara,
इति ते कथितं विप्र कृष्णांशचरितं शुभम्
Thus, O Brahmin, the auspicious deeds of Krishna's portion have been told to you.
तत्त्वं कथय विप्रेन्द्र सर्वज्ञोऽसि मतो हि नः
O foremost of Brahmins, tell the truth, for we consider you to be all-knowing.
गत्वा वार्तां तथा चक्रुर्यथा जातो महारणः
Having gone, they reported the events as they occurred, by which a great battle arose.
श्रुत्वा परिमलो भूपो वाजिवृंदं क्षयं गतम्
Hearing that the troop of horses had been destroyed, King Parimala,
सिंधुदेशे च गंतव्यं त्वया च बलशालिना
You, endowed with strength, must go to the land of Sindhu.
इति श्रुत्वा तु कृष्णांशो देवसिंहेन संयुतः
Hearing this, Krishna's portion, accompanied by Devasimha,
शूरैश्च दशसाहस्रैस्सार्द्धं तत्र समागतः
Along with ten thousand brave warriors, assembled there.
प्रातःकाले तु संप्राप्ते मालाकारस्य वै सुता
When morning came, the daughter of the garland-maker,
कृष्णांशस्तु तदा पूजां कृत्वा देवमयो मुदा
Then Krishna's portion, having joyfully performed worship to the god,
बह्वाश्चर्ययुतं पुष्प मत्तभ्रमरनादितम्
With many wonders, filled with flowers, resounding with the hum of intoxicated bees,
एतस्मिन्नंतरे पुष्पा पुष्पार्थं समुपागता प्रसन्नवदनं शान्तमिंद्रनीलमणिद्युतिम् ।।3.3.21.
Meanwhile, Pushpa arrived for flowers, her face serene, peaceful, shining with the luster of an Indra-nila gem.
कृष्णांशस्तु शुभां नारीं दृष्ट्वाश्चर्यमुपागतः स्वर्गलोकादिहायाता यदि वा पन्नगी स्वयम्
Krishna's portion, seeing that auspicious woman, was amazed, wondering if she had come from heaven or was herself a serpent maiden.
इति श्रुत्वा च सा प्राह मालाकारस्य वै सुता
Hearing this, the daughter of the garland-maker spoke.
पुष्पेणानेन भूपाल तुलिता भूपतेः सुता
With this flower, O king, the daughter of the king is equaled.
देवैश्च प्रार्थिता बाला रूपयौवनशालिनी
Sought by the gods, the maiden is endowed with beauty and youth.
शृणु तत्कारणं भूप मकरंदो यथा भवेत्
Hear now, O king, the reason for this, how Makaraṇḍa came to be.
अजेयोऽन्यैश्च कृष्णांशादृते त्वं जगतीतले
On earth, you are invincible by others except for Kṛṣṇāṃśa.
स राज्यं कारयामास धर्ममेघं हरिप्रियम्
He established a kingdom, a cloud of righteousness, dear to Hari.
मिथुनं जनयामास पावकात्सुंदराननम्
From the fire, he begot a pair, one with a beautiful face.
पञ्चमाब्दवया भूत्वा मकरंदो महाबलः
When Makaraṇḍa, of great strength, reached the age of five years,
द्वादशाब्दवयः प्राप्ते मकरंदे नृपप्रिये 3.3.21.
And when Makaraṇḍa, beloved of kings, attained the age of twelve,
