तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तं स्कंदस्तत्रैवान्तर्दधे पुनः
Having said 'so be it,' Skanda then disappeared there itself once more.
नाम्ना मयूरनगरं नरवृंदसमन्वितम्
By name, it was Mayuranagara, filled with multitudes of people.
लहरो नामा तद्बंधुर्द्विदशाब्दप्रयत्नतः
Laharo, a relative by name, after ten years of effort,
तदा प्रसन्नो भगवान्वरुणो यादसां पतिः
Then the blessed Lord Varuna, master of the waters, was pleased.
इति श्रुत्वाऽमृतमयं वचनं लहरो नृपः
Hearing these nectar-like words, King Laharo
अतः प्रचेतास्ते नाम नमस्तुभ्यं प्रचेतसे
Therefore, you are called Prachetas; salutations to you, O Prachetas.
रुणद्धि पयसां वेगं न केनाप्यवरोधितः
You restrain the flow of waters, not hindered by anyone.
दैत्यानां बंधनार्थाय देवानां जयहेतवे 3.3.20.
For binding the Daityas and for the victory of the gods.
इति स्तुतस्तदा देवो राज्ञा तेनैव धीमता
Thus praised at that time by that wise king, the god
त्रियोजनायामयुतां चतुर्वर्णसमन्विताम्
A city measuring thirty yojanas, inhabited by the four varnas.
भूपस्तु तत्प्रसादेन प्राप राज्ञीं शुभाननाम्
By his grace, the king obtained a queen named Shubhana.
तस्यां स जनयामास सुतान्षो डशसंमितान्
In her, he begot sons equal to the number ten.
तत्पश्चात्कन्यका जाता नाम्ना मदनमंजरी
After that, a daughter was born, named Madanamanjari.
देवसिंहं वरं मत्वा चंद्रवंशिनमुत्तमम्
Considering Devasiṃha, the excellent descendant of the lunar dynasty, as a worthy match,
रणधीरस्तु तनयो लक्षमुद्रान्वितो बली
Their son, Ranadhira, was strong and possessed a lakh of coins.
नत्वा परिमलं भूपं तदीयात्कुलशालिनः
Having bowed to King Parimala, renowned in his lineage,
श्रुत्वा परिमलो भूपो देवसिंहं महामतिम्
Hearing this, King Parimala, of great wisdom, summoned Devasiṃha.
देवसिंहस्तु बलवान्पितृव्यं प्राह नम्रधीः 3.3.20.
Devasiṃha, powerful and humble-minded, addressed his paternal uncle.
बहुधा प्रार्थितस्सर्वैर्द्विजवृंदसमन्वितैः
He was earnestly requested in many ways by all, accompanied by the assembly of twice-born.
तदा परिमलो भूपो रणधीरं वचोऽब्रवीत्
Then King Parimala spoke these words to the steadfast Ranadhira.
तथेति मत्वा स नृपो रणधीरो गृहं ययौ
Thinking 'So be it,' that king, Ranadhira, went to his house.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे धूर्तो महीपतिरुवाच तम्
Meanwhile, a cunning king addressed him.
शूद्रीयोऽत्र वरो राजन्वर्णसंकरकारकः
O King, this suitor is of Shudra origin, a cause of confusion among the castes.
कारागारे लोहमये बंधनं कुरु भूपतेः
In a prison of iron, bind him, O lord of the earth.
जितस्तैर्जम्बुको राजा नेत्रसिंहस्तु यो नृपः
Jambuka, the king, was defeated by them; and Netrasiṃha, who was also a king.
आर्यसिंहस्तथान्ये च जितास्ते बलवत्तराः
Āryasiṃha and others likewise, those stronger ones, were conquered.
माघशुक्लदशम्यां च बलखानिं महाबलः 3.3.20.
On the tenth day of the bright half of Māgha, the mighty one attacked Balakhāni.
देशे पांचालके रम्ये लहरीनगरे स्थितः
Dwelling in the beautiful land of Pāñcālaka, in the city of Laharī.
नृपतेराज्ञया शूरा युद्धाय समुपाययुः वीरानाज्ञापयामास स्वकीयान्संगरे पुनः
By the king's command, the heroes came together for battle; he ordered his own warriors again to the fight.
तयोर्युद्धमभूद्घोरं सेनयोर्लोमहर्षणम् कृष्णांशेनैव सहितो रिपोर्वधमकारयत्
A fierce battle arose between the two armies, terrifying to behold; aided by a portion of Krishna, he slew the enemy.
