इति व्यासेन कथितं वाक्यं कलिविशारदम्
Thus spoke Vyāsa, the one skilled in the matters of Kali.
कलेर्युगस्य पूर्णां तां तच्छ्रुत्वा तृप्तिमावह
Hearing this complete account of the Kali age, they attained satisfaction.
सूत उवाच षोडशाब्दसहस्रे च शेषे तद्द्वापरे युगे
Sūta said: When sixteen thousand years remained in that Dvāpara Yuga,
क्वचिद्विप्राः स्मृता भूपाः क्वचिद्राजन्यवंशजाः
In some places, the brāhmaṇas were known as kings, and in others, those born in the royal lineage.
द्विशताष्टसहस्रे द्वे शेषे तु द्वापरे युगे
When two hundred and eight thousand years remained in Dvāpara Yuga,
इंद्रियाणि दमित्वा यो ह्यात्मध्यानपरायणः
He who, having subdued his senses, is devoted to meditation on the self,
प्रदाननगरस्यैव पूर्वभागे महावनम् 3.1.4.
In the eastern part of the city of Pradāna, there is a great forest.
पापवृक्षतले गत्वा पत्नीदर्शनतत्परः
Going beneath the sinful tree, he became intent on seeing his wife.
वंचिता तेन धूर्तेन विष्ण्वाज्ञा भंगतां गता
Deceived by that rogue, the command of Viṣṇu was transgressed.
उदुंबरस्य पत्रैश्च ताभ्यां वाय्वशनं कृतम्
And with the leaves of the udumbara tree, those two sustained themselves on air.
त्रिंशोत्तरं नवशतं तस्यायुः परिकीर्तितम्
His lifespan is said to be nine hundred and thirty years.
तस्माज्जातः सुतः श्रेष्ठः श्वेतनामेति विश्रुतः
From him was born a distinguished son, renowned as Śvetanāma.
अनुहस्तस्य तनयः शतहीनं कृतं पदम्
The son of Anuhasta attained a position less than a hundred.
महल्ललस्तस्य सुतः पंचहीनं शतं नव
His son was Mahallala, whose years numbered ninety-five.
तस्माच्च विरदो जातो राज्यं षष्ट्युत्तरं समाः
And from him was born Virada, who ruled for sixty years.
हनूकस्तस्य तनयो विष्णु भक्तिपरायणः
His son was Hanūka, devoted to the worship of Viṣṇu.
त्रिशतं पंचषष्टिश्च राज्यं वर्षाणि तत्स्मृतम् 3.1.4.
His reign is remembered as three hundred and sixty-five years.
आचारश्च विवेकश्च द्विजता देवपूजनम्
Good conduct, discernment, twice-born status, and worship of the gods,
विष्णुभक्त्यग्निपूजा च ह्यहिंसा च तपो दमः
Devotion to Viṣṇu, worship of fire, nonviolence, austerity, and self-restraint,
मतोच्छिलस्तस्य सुतो हनुकस्यैव भार्गव
Matocchila was his son, of Hanuka, O Bhārgava.
लोमकस्तस्य तनयो राज्यं सप्तशतं समाः
Lomaka's son ruled the kingdom for seven hundred years.
तस्माज्जातः सुतो न्यूहो निर्गतस्तूह एव सः
From him was born a son named Nyūha, who departed from there.
सीमः शमश्च भावश्च त्रयः पुत्रा बभूविरे
Sīma, Śama, and Bhāva—these three became his sons.
एकदा भगवान्विष्णुस्तत्स्वप्ने तु समागतः
Once, Lord Viṣṇu appeared to him in a dream.
वत्स न्यूह शृणुष्वेदं प्रलयः सप्तमेऽहनि
"My child Nyūha, listen to this: destruction will come on the seventh day."
जीवनं कुरु भक्तेषु सर्वश्रेष्ठो भविष्यसि
"Preserve life among the devotees; you will become the greatest of all."
हस्तत्रिशतलम्बां च पंचाशद्धस्तविस्तृताम् 3.1.4.
He made a vessel three hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide.
आरुह्य स्वकुलैस्सार्द्धं विष्णुध्यानपरोऽभवत्
Ascending it together with his family, he became absorbed in meditation on Viṣṇu.
चत्वारिंशद्दिनान्येव महावृष्टिमकारयत्
For forty days, he caused a great rain to fall.
चत्वारो मिलिताः सर्वे विशालायां न चागताः
All four gathered together, but did not reach the great city.
