मार्गप्राप्ताश्च ये भूपा ग्रामपा राष्ट्रपास्तथा
And those kings who arrived on the path, along with village chiefs and rulers of regions,
ये भूपा मदमत्ताश्च जित्वा तांस्तालनो बली 3.3.18.
All those intoxicated kings were conquered by the mighty Tālana.
पूजयित्वा च रामेशं रामेण स्थापितं शिवम्
Having worshipped Rāmeśa, the Śiva established by Rāma,
नलिनीसागरं प्राप्य तत्र वासमकारयन्
They reached the Nalinī ocean and made their dwelling there.
आर्य्यसिंह महाभाग स्वपोतान्देहि तीर्णकान् नो चेत्त्वां सबलं जित्वा राष्ट्रभंगं करोम्यहम्
'O noble Āryasiṃha, hand over your sons who have crossed over; otherwise, I shall defeat you with my army and destroy your kingdom.'
इति श्रुत्वा पत्रवचो भूपतिर्बलवत्तरः
Hearing this letter's message, the king, stronger than all,
इन्दुलः स्तंभनं मंत्रं संस्थाप्य शर उत्तमे
Indula, establishing the mantra of immobilization, took up the supreme arrow.
दिवसे सुखशर्मा च त्रिलक्षैः स्वदलैः सह
On that day, Sukhaśarmā, together with his own three hundred thousand followers,
निशामुखे च संप्राप्ते शक्रपुत्रो महाबलः। शतपुत्रैः क्षत्रियाणां सार्द्धं युद्धाय चाययौ
At the approach of night, the mighty son of Indra came for battle, accompanied by a hundred sons and the kṣatriyas.
तेषां हया हरिद्वर्णा योगिवेषधरा बलात् तत्पश्चाद्गेहमासाद्य तदा तैः सुखितोऽवसत्
Their horses were green in color, and they wore the garb of ascetics; afterwards, reaching the house, he dwelled there happily with them.
एवं जाताश्च षण्मासास्तयोर्युद्धं हि सेनयोः
Thus, for six months, there was war between the armies of those two.
संप्राप्य मानसीं पीडां युद्धार्थं विमुखोऽभवत्
Afflicted by mental distress, he became averse to fighting.
देवसिंहं समाहूय त्रिकालज्ञं महामतिम् श्रुत्वोवाच महायोगी देवसिंहो महाबलः
Summoning Devasiṃha, the wise knower of the three times, the great yogi Devasiṃha, mighty in strength, spoke after hearing.
महेंद्रतनयः कश्चित्सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रकोविदः रात्रौ स्वयं समागम्य करोति बलसंक्षयम्
There is a certain son of Mahendra, skilled in all weapons and missiles, who comes at night himself and destroys the army.
अतस्त्वं मत्सहायेन तालनेन समन्वितः विजयी भव शीघ्रं हि नो चेद्यायां यमक्षयम्
Therefore, with my help and that of Tālana, quickly become victorious; otherwise, you will go to the abode of Yama.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य देवसिंहस्य भाषितम् सेनां निवेशयामास पोतेषु हयवाहनः
Hearing these words spoken by Devasiṃha, the horse-warrior arranged the army on the ships.
अर्द्धं सैन्यं च तत्रैव स्थापयित्वा महाबलः
There, the mighty one stationed half the army.
हयारूढाश्च ते शूराः सर्वे युद्धसमन्विताः
Mounted on horses, all those heroes were ready for battle.
हत्वा ते रक्षिणः सर्वाँल्लुंठयित्वा पुरं शुभम्
Having slain all the guards and plundered the splendid city,
राज्ञोऽन्तः पुरमागत्य कृष्णांशो बलवत्तरः सप्तालिभिर्वृतां रम्यां गीतनृत्यविशारदाम् ।। 3.3.19.
The powerful portion of Kṛṣṇa entered the king’s inner chambers, where a beautiful woman, skilled in song and dance, was surrounded by seven attendants.
बलाद्दोलां समारोप्य लुंठयित्वा रिपोर्गृहम्
By force, he placed her on a palanquin and plundered the enemy’s house.
बलखानिस्तु बलवान्देवतालनसंयुतः
Balakhāni, powerful and accompanied by Devatālana,
सुखवर्माणमागत्य सेनाध्यक्षं रिपोः सुतम्
Reached Sukhavarman, the commander of the enemy’s army and his son.
हते तस्मिन्महावीर्ये जयन्तः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः
When that great hero was slain, Jayanta was overcome with wrath.
श्यालं च सुखवर्माणं संजीव्य स्वगृहं ययौ
He revived his brother-in-law Sukhavarman and went to his own house.
विस्मितः स ययौ गेहं यथा पूर्वं तथाविधः
Astonished, he went home, just as before, in the same manner.
आर्य्यसिंहगृहं गत्वा पृष्टवान्सर्वकारणम्
He went to the house of Arya Simha and inquired about everything.
रुरोद सुभृशं वीरो हा प्रिये मदविह्वले
The hero wept bitterly, crying, 'Alas, my beloved, overcome with passion!'
इत्येवं रोदनं कृत्वा वडवोपरि संस्थितः एकाकी स ययौ क्रुद्धो निशि यत्र स्थितो रिपुः
Having thus wept, he stood upon the mare, and alone, enraged, went at night to where the enemy was stationed.
एतस्मिन्समये वीरो बलखानिर्महाबलः 3.3.19.
At that very moment, the mighty hero Balakhan arrived.
