सभायां लक्षणो वीरो यात्राकाले तमब्रवीत् नभोमार्गेण संप्राप्तौ योगिनौ च शिवाज्ञया
In the assembly, the hero Lakṣaṇa spoke to him at the time of departure: 'By Śiva’s command, the two yogins arrived by the path of the sky.'
जहतुस्तौ च मां जित्वा तत्तीक्ष्णभय मोहितम् इत्युक्तवंतं तं नत्वा ययुर्भूपाः स्वमालयम्
Those two, having defeated me and bewildered by intense fear, departed after bowing to him who had spoken thus, and the kings returned to their own abode.
सागराख्यसरस्तीरे कदाचिदिंदुलो बली
Once, on the shore of the lake called Sāgara, Indula, the mighty, was present.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे हंसा आकाशाद्भू मिमागताः
Meanwhile, swans descended from the sky to the earth.
वक्ष्यमाणं वचः प्राहुर्धन्योऽयं दिव्यविग्रहः
They spoke these words: 'Blessed is he, of divine form.'
महावती पुरीणां च सागरः सरसामपि
Sāgara is the greatest among cities and among lakes as well.
भो इन्दुल महाप्राज्ञ मानसे सरसि स्थिताः
O Indula, most wise, we are staying at the lake of the mind.
दृष्ट्वा तत्र शुभां नारीं सर्वाभरणभूषिताम्
There, seeing an auspicious woman adorned with all ornaments—
दृष्ट्वा मोहत्वमापन्ना वयं देशान्तरं गताः त्वत्समो न हि कोऽप्यत्र पद्मिनी सदृशो वरः
Having seen her, we became bewildered and went to another land; for there is no one here equal to you, nor any suitor worthy of the lotus-like maiden.
तस्मात्त्वं नः समारुह्य तां देवीं द्रष्टुमर्हसि
Therefore, you should ascend with us to see that goddess.
सिंहलद्वीपके रम्ये ह्यार्यसिंहो नृपः स्थितः रागिण्यः सप्त विख्यातास्तत्सख्यः प्रमदोत्तमाः
On the beautiful island of Siṃhala, there reigned King Āryasiṃha; seven renowned queens, celebrated for their beauty, were his companions and dearest consorts.
नलिनीसागरे रम्ये गिरिजामंदिरं शुभम् 3.3.18.
In the delightful Nalinī ocean stood the auspicious temple of Girijā.
सापि तं सुन्दरं दृष्ट्वा हंसदेहे समास्थितम्
She, seeing him—so handsome—residing in the form of a swan,
वर्षमेकं ययौ तत्र नानालीलासु मोहितः
Spent one year there, enchanted by various playful pastimes.
भक्तिगर्वत्वमापन्ने चाह्लादे जगदंबिका
When pride arose from devotion and joy, Jagadambikā was delighted.
तस्य प्राप्तं महद्दुःखमाह्लादस्य जयैषिणः
But for him, who sought only happiness, great sorrow befell.
इन्दुलं रूपसम्पन्नं लंकापुरनिवासिनः
Indula, endowed with beauty, dwelt in the city of Laṅkā.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं सकुलो विललाप ह
Hearing those dreadful words, his whole family lamented.
कृष्णांशो रुदितं प्राहाह्लादं ज्येष्ठं शृणुष्व भोः इंदुलं त्वां समेष्यामि भवान्धैर्यपरो भवेत्
Kṛṣṇāṃśa, seeing the weeping, spoke to Ahlāda, the eldest: 'Listen, I shall bring Indula to you; you must remain steadfast.'
बलखानिश्च कृष्णांशो देवसिंहश्च तालनः
Balakhāni, Kṛṣṇāṃśa, Devasiṃha, and Tālana,
मार्गप्राप्ताश्च ये भूपा ग्रामपा राष्ट्रपास्तथा
And those kings who arrived on the path, along with village chiefs and rulers of regions,
ये भूपा मदमत्ताश्च जित्वा तांस्तालनो बली 3.3.18.
All those intoxicated kings were conquered by the mighty Tālana.
पूजयित्वा च रामेशं रामेण स्थापितं शिवम्
Having worshipped Rāmeśa, the Śiva established by Rāma,
नलिनीसागरं प्राप्य तत्र वासमकारयन्
They reached the Nalinī ocean and made their dwelling there.
आर्य्यसिंह महाभाग स्वपोतान्देहि तीर्णकान् नो चेत्त्वां सबलं जित्वा राष्ट्रभंगं करोम्यहम्
'O noble Āryasiṃha, hand over your sons who have crossed over; otherwise, I shall defeat you with my army and destroy your kingdom.'
इति श्रुत्वा पत्रवचो भूपतिर्बलवत्तरः
Hearing this letter's message, the king, stronger than all,
इन्दुलः स्तंभनं मंत्रं संस्थाप्य शर उत्तमे
Indula, establishing the mantra of immobilization, took up the supreme arrow.
दिवसे सुखशर्मा च त्रिलक्षैः स्वदलैः सह
On that day, Sukhaśarmā, together with his own three hundred thousand followers,
निशामुखे च संप्राप्ते शक्रपुत्रो महाबलः। शतपुत्रैः क्षत्रियाणां सार्द्धं युद्धाय चाययौ
At the approach of night, the mighty son of Indra came for battle, accompanied by a hundred sons and the kṣatriyas.
तेषां हया हरिद्वर्णा योगिवेषधरा बलात् तत्पश्चाद्गेहमासाद्य तदा तैः सुखितोऽवसत्
Their horses were green in color, and they wore the garb of ascetics; afterwards, reaching the house, he dwelled there happily with them.
