बलखानिर्गतो गर्ते रुरोध नगरीं तदा
Balakhan emerged from the pit and then besieged the city.
त्रिलक्षैश्च हयैः सार्द्धं सूर्यद्युतिरुपाययौ
Radiant like the sun, he came together with three hundred thousand horses.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धमहोरात्रं हि सैन्ययोः
A great battle took place between those two armies, lasting day and night.
द्वितीयेऽह्नि समायाते गजसेनो महाबलः दाहयामास तत्सैन्यं तालनाद्यैश्च पालितम्
When the second day arrived, Gajasena, mighty in strength, set fire to that army, which was guarded by Tālana and others.
भस्मीभूतं बलं दृष्ट्वा तालनः शत्रुसम्मुखे
Seeing his force reduced to ashes, Tālana stood facing the enemy.
मूर्छितं नृपमाज्ञाय सूर्यद्युतिरुपाययौ
Learning that the king had fallen unconscious, Sūryadyuti came forth.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे शूरौ देवौ चाह्लादकृष्णकौ
At that moment, the two heroic gods, Ahlāda and Kṛṣṇaka, appeared.
सुबद्धं भ्रातरं ज्ञात्वा हयं कांतामलोऽरुहत् गृहीत्वा तं स कृष्णांशं तस्य तेजः समाहरत्
Knowing his brother was bound, Kṛṣṇāṃśa mounted the beautiful horse, seized him, and gathered his radiance.
सप्तलक्षबलं सर्वं वह्निभूतमभूत्तदा 3.3.16.
Then the entire force of seven hundred thousand became like fire.
गजसेनस्यार्द्धसैन्यं तैश्च सर्वैर्विनाशितम् ।। विजयं नृपतिः प्राप्य हर्षितो गेहमाययौ
Half of Gajasena’s army was destroyed by them all; the king, having attained victory, joyfully returned home.
वह्निभूतं च कृष्णांशं दृष्ट्वाह्लादः सुदुःखितः
Seeing Kṛṣṇāṃśa turned to fire, Ahlāda was deeply distressed.
तदा देवी वचः प्राह वत्स ते पुत्र एव च
Then the goddess spoke, 'Child, he is indeed your son.'
इत्युक्ते वचने देव्या इन्दुलो वासवाज्ञया वडवामृतमारुह्य हयं तत्र समागतः
When the goddess had spoken thus, Indulo, by the command of Vāsava, mounted the celestial horse and arrived there.
तदङ्गादुद्धृता वाहा मेघा इव समन्ततः
From his body steeds emerged, spreading all around like clouds.
शमीभूते तदा वह्नौ स्वमुखात्सहयो मुदा
When the fire was pacified, he, with his companion, joyfully emerged from his own mouth.
जीविते सप्तलक्षे तु शमीभूते हि पावके
When the seven hundred thousand were restored to life and the fire was pacified,
लक्षं सैन्यं तु ये शिष्टास्ते सर्वेऽपि भयातुराः
Of the hundred thousand soldiers who remained, all were seized with fear.
केचित्संन्यासिनो भूत्वा केचिद्वै ब्रह्मचारिणः
Some became renunciants, and some took up the vow of celibacy.
बद्ध्वा तान्गजसेनादींस्त्रीञ्छूरान्स च तालनः 3.3.16.
Tālana then bound those heroes, including Gajasena and others.
बलखानिं च निष्कास्य तालनस्तदनंतरम् तान्वीरांस्ताडयामास वेतसैः स्तंभबंधनैः
After expelling the army’s division, Tālana then struck those warriors with canes and tied them to posts.
गजमुक्ताज्ञया विप्र सेनापतरिरुदारधीः बलखानिर्हयारूढो गजमुक्ता च मंडपे
By the command of the elephant-pearl, the wise commander mounted the war-chariot, and the elephant-pearl was also in the pavilion.
गजसेनस्तदा दिव्यैर्भोजनैस्तानभोजयत् लक्षशूरान्स संस्थाप्य स्वयं रुद्रपुरं ययौ
Then Gajasena fed them with divine foods, established the hundred thousand warriors, and himself went to Rudrapura.
ते रात्रौ लोहदुर्गेषु ह्युषित्वा यत्नतो बलात् द्वारमुद्घाटयाशु त्वं नो चेत्प्राणांस्त्यजिष्यसि
They spent the night in iron fortresses, striving with force; quickly open the gate, or else you will lose your lives.
इति सेनापतिः श्रुत्वा लक्षशूरान्समादिशत्
Thus, hearing this, the commander ordered the hundred thousand warriors.
इति श्रुत्वा तु ते शूराः शतघ्न्यस्तैः सुरोपिताः
Hearing this, those heroes were struck by weapons that could kill a hundred at once.
हते दशसहस्रे तु कृष्णांशो बिंदुलं हयम्
When ten thousand had been slain, Krishna's portion, Bindula, mounted the horse.
हतशेषा भयार्ताश्च सहयाशीतिसम्मिताः
The survivors, terrified, along with their companions, numbered eighty.
श्रुत्वा भयातुरो राजा स्वसुताभ्यां समन्वितः स्वपापं क्षालयामास दत्त्वा कन्यां विधानतः
Hearing this, the frightened king, accompanied by his two sons, washed away his own sin by giving his daughter according to custom.
षोडशोष्ट्राणि स्वर्णानि गृहीत्वाह्लाद एव सः 3.3.16.
Taking sixteen camels of gold, he was filled with joy.
संप्राप्ते गेहमाह्लादे देवी स्वर्णवती स्वयम्
When joy entered the house, the queen herself became adorned with gold.
