दृष्ट्वा ततस्तु चंडालान्बलखानिरताडयत्
Then Balakhāni, seeing the Caṇḍālas, struck them.
मृते पंचशते रौद्रे तच्छेषा दुद्रुवुर्भयात्
When five hundred of the fierce ones were slain, the rest fled in fear.
स नृपः कारणं ज्ञात्वा हस्तबद्धो महाबली
That king, realizing the reason, bound hand and foot, though mighty,
भवान्महाबलो वीर चांडालैर्बंधनं गतः
You, O mighty hero, were bound by the Caṇḍālas.
मत्सुता भवने प्राप्ता दिष्ट्या त्वं जीवितं गतः इति श्रुत्वा प्रियं वाक्यं तं प्रशस्य तथाकरोत्
My daughter has arrived at your house; by fortune, you have returned to life. Hearing these dear words, he praised him and acted accordingly.
मंडपे वेदकर्माणि विवाहार्थं चकार सः
He performed Vedic rites in the pavilion for the purpose of marriage.
तदाज्ञया लिखित्वासौ गजसेनोऽग्निसेवकः
By his command, Gajasena, the servant of fire, wrote it down.
बलखानेर्विवाहोऽत्र भवान्सैन्यसमन्वितः
The marriage of Balakhan occurs here, accompanied by your army.
इत्युक्ते निशि जातायां बलखानिर्महाबलः 3.3.16.
When this was said, Balakhan the mighty was born at night.
गरलं तेन संभुक्तं न ममार वराच्छुभात् पुनर्बबंध निगडैस्ताडयामास वेतसैः
He consumed poison, but did not die due to the auspicious boon; again he was bound with chains and beaten with canes.
विषदोषमसृक्द्वारान्निस्सृतं सर्वदेहतः
The poison's effect was expelled from his whole body through the blood.
राजन्किमीदृशं जातं त्वत्सैन्यं ताडने रतम् यातनां प्रथमं प्राप्य तदनूद्वाहितो भवेत्
O king, what has happened that your army delights in beating? Having first endured torment, then he should be released.
इत्युक्ते सति भूपाले गजमुक्ता समागता
When this was said to the king, Gajamukta arrived.
नृपः प्राह सुते शीघ्रं याहि त्वं निजमंदिरे
The king said to his son, 'Go quickly to your own house.'
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं बलखानिर्महाबलः
Hearing these terrible words, Balakhan the mighty...
शूरान्पंचशतं तं च रुद्ध्वा शस्त्रैः समंततः
He surrounded him with five hundred heroes, armed on all sides.
गजसेन सुतो ज्येष्ठः सूर्यद्युतिरुपागतः
Gajasena's eldest son, radiant like the sun, arrived.
तथा गतं पतिं दृष्ट्वा गजमुक्ता सुदुःखिता
Seeing her husband thus gone, Gajamukta was greatly distressed.
पतिं निष्कास्य रुदती व्यजनं पतये ददौ 3.3.16.
Weeping, she brought out her husband and gave him a fan.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरश्चाह्लादः सप्तलक्षकैः
Meanwhile, the hero Ahlada arrived with seven hundred thousand.
बलखानिर्गतो गर्ते रुरोध नगरीं तदा
Balakhan emerged from the pit and then besieged the city.
त्रिलक्षैश्च हयैः सार्द्धं सूर्यद्युतिरुपाययौ
Radiant like the sun, he came together with three hundred thousand horses.
तयोश्चासीन्महद्युद्धमहोरात्रं हि सैन्ययोः
A great battle took place between those two armies, lasting day and night.
द्वितीयेऽह्नि समायाते गजसेनो महाबलः दाहयामास तत्सैन्यं तालनाद्यैश्च पालितम्
When the second day arrived, Gajasena, mighty in strength, set fire to that army, which was guarded by Tālana and others.
भस्मीभूतं बलं दृष्ट्वा तालनः शत्रुसम्मुखे
Seeing his force reduced to ashes, Tālana stood facing the enemy.
मूर्छितं नृपमाज्ञाय सूर्यद्युतिरुपाययौ
Learning that the king had fallen unconscious, Sūryadyuti came forth.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे शूरौ देवौ चाह्लादकृष्णकौ
At that moment, the two heroic gods, Ahlāda and Kṛṣṇaka, appeared.
सुबद्धं भ्रातरं ज्ञात्वा हयं कांतामलोऽरुहत् गृहीत्वा तं स कृष्णांशं तस्य तेजः समाहरत्
Knowing his brother was bound, Kṛṣṇāṃśa mounted the beautiful horse, seized him, and gathered his radiance.
सप्तलक्षबलं सर्वं वह्निभूतमभूत्तदा 3.3.16.
Then the entire force of seven hundred thousand became like fire.
गजसेनस्यार्द्धसैन्यं तैश्च सर्वैर्विनाशितम् ।। विजयं नृपतिः प्राप्य हर्षितो गेहमाययौ
Half of Gajasena’s army was destroyed by them all; the king, having attained victory, joyfully returned home.
