आस्थितः स कथामध्ये नारदोऽभ्यागमत्तदा
As the story was being told, Nārada then arrived.
तं दृष्ट्वा हर्षितो राजा पूजयामास धर्मवित्
Seeing him, the righteous king rejoiced and offered him worship.
म्लेच्छैर्हतस्तव पिता यमलोकमतो गतः
Your father was slain by the mlecchas and thus went to the realm of Yama.
तच्छ्रुत्वा क्रोधताम्राक्षो ब्राह्मणान्वेदवित्तमान्
Hearing this, the brāhmaṇas, learned in the Veda, became red-eyed with anger.
यज्ञकुंडं चतुष्कोणं योजनान्येव षोडश
The sacrificial altar was four-sided, measuring exactly sixteen yojanas.
हारहूणान्बर्बरांश्च गुरुंडांश्च शकान्खसान्
He brought the Hāras, Hūṇas, Barbaras, Gurundas, and Śakas together.
द्वीप स्थितान्कामरूश्च चीनान्सागरमध्यगान्
He gathered those dwelling on islands, the Kāmarū people, the Chinese, and those living in the midst of the ocean.
ब्राह्मणान्दक्षिणां दत्त्वा अभिषेकमकारयत्
Having given gifts to the Brāhmaṇas, he performed the consecration ceremony.
म्लेच्छहंता नाम तस्य विख्यातं भुवि सर्वतः 3.1.4.
He became renowned everywhere on earth by the name 'Destroyer of the Mlecchas.'
स्वर्गलोकं गतो राजा तत्पुत्रो वेदवान्स्मृतः नारायणं पूजयित्वा दिव्यां स्तुतिमथाकरोत्
The king, having attained the heavenly realm, was remembered as Vedavān, his son; after worshipping Nārāyaṇa, he then composed a divine hymn.
चतुर्युगकृते तुभ्यं वासुदेवाय साक्षिणे
To you, Vāsudeva, the witness of the four ages, I offer praise.
नमः शक्त्यवताराय रामकृष्णाय ते नमः
Salutations to you, the incarnation of power, to Rāma and Kṛṣṇa, I bow.
नमो भक्तावताराय कल्पक्षेत्रनिवासिने मम प्रियस्य म्लेच्छस्य तत्पित्रा वंशनाशनम्
Homage to you, the incarnation for devotees, who dwells in the field of creation; you destroyed the lineage of the foreigner who was dear to my father.
प्राप्तवान्स हरिः साक्षाद्भगवान्भक्तवत्सलः
That very Hari, the Lord who is affectionate to his devotees, appeared directly.
बहुरूपमहं कृत्वा तवेच्छां पूरयाम्यहम्
Assuming many forms, I fulfill your desire.
विष्णुकर्दमतो जातौ .म्लेच्छवंशप्रवर्धनौ
Born from Viṣṇu and Kardama, they became the propagators of the mleccha lineage.
गिरिं नीलाचलं प्राप्य किंचित्कालमवासयत् 3.1.4.
He reached the mountain Nīlācala and resided there for some time.
पितुस्तुल्यं कृतं राज्यमनपत्यो मृतिं गतः
He ruled the kingdom as his father had, but, being childless, he passed away.
भविष्यंति भृगुश्रेष्ठ तस्माच्च तुहिनाचलम्
From him, O best of Bhṛgus, will arise those who will go to the snowy mountain.
इति श्रुत्वा द्विजाः सर्वे नैमिषारण्यवासिनः
Hearing this, all the twice-born residing in Naimiṣāraṇya,
इति व्यासेन कथितं वाक्यं कलिविशारदम्
Thus spoke Vyāsa, the one skilled in the matters of Kali.
कलेर्युगस्य पूर्णां तां तच्छ्रुत्वा तृप्तिमावह
Hearing this complete account of the Kali age, they attained satisfaction.
सूत उवाच षोडशाब्दसहस्रे च शेषे तद्द्वापरे युगे
Sūta said: When sixteen thousand years remained in that Dvāpara Yuga,
क्वचिद्विप्राः स्मृता भूपाः क्वचिद्राजन्यवंशजाः
In some places, the brāhmaṇas were known as kings, and in others, those born in the royal lineage.
द्विशताष्टसहस्रे द्वे शेषे तु द्वापरे युगे
When two hundred and eight thousand years remained in Dvāpara Yuga,
इंद्रियाणि दमित्वा यो ह्यात्मध्यानपरायणः
He who, having subdued his senses, is devoted to meditation on the self,
प्रदाननगरस्यैव पूर्वभागे महावनम् 3.1.4.
In the eastern part of the city of Pradāna, there is a great forest.
पापवृक्षतले गत्वा पत्नीदर्शनतत्परः
Going beneath the sinful tree, he became intent on seeing his wife.
वंचिता तेन धूर्तेन विष्ण्वाज्ञा भंगतां गता
Deceived by that rogue, the command of Viṣṇu was transgressed.
उदुंबरस्य पत्रैश्च ताभ्यां वाय्वशनं कृतम्
And with the leaves of the udumbara tree, those two sustained themselves on air.
